Description
AICD Anomaly 0011, designated the "Xenian Malignance Zone," is a massive, continental sprawl of Xenian infestation located within Sector 1. Spanning from the center of what used to be Washington, southward down the west coast all the way to the northwestern tip of Mexico. Anomaly 0011 was documented shortly after the Universal Union's arrival on Terra and the formation of the U.P.R.D.. It should be noted however that pre-arrival government documentation reports its unique existence as far back as a year after the "Resonance Cascade," though was considerably smaller during the time of this report, and much more illusive.

The Xenian Malignance Zone would appear to have its origins in one spot, but was in fact observed to have been the result of multiple common Xen Infestations across the west coast beginning to expand at a much faster rate than your average infestation. Furthermore, reports indicated that the infestations were far more resilient to attempts of cleansing, able to grow back quickly after removal, and even return from seemingly complete annihilation more durable towards whatever had destroyed it last. If pre-arrival reports are to be trusted, the infestation as a whole is a collection of much smaller infestations that have grown and merged together, beginning to expand outwards. This infestation terraforms the planet, exuding a toxic unbreathable atmosphere from floral matter. These are the result of orange spores that drift into the atmosphere, which turn into green and purple hues after introduction to atmospheric gasses, turning the sky into a truly alien visage.

Anomaly 0011 is documented to be incredibly invasive, able to overtake practically any environment. This has resulted in entire cities being turned into malformed masses of xenian floral mass. This shows that urban environments are not immune. Aquatic environments such as coasts, coral reefs, and even ocean floors have also shown to be turned by the infestation. The only environment that seems to slow the progress of the infestation is mountainous terrain, shown by the "Rocky Mountains," which while not immune to the expansion, are able to slow it marginally. Altitude and temperature have both been considered, but seem to hold no effect in research.

Xen fauna is heavily abundant within the Malignance Zone, which naturally makes research and observation very difficult due to their hostile nature. More insidiously, bacteria and microscopic parasites are also very common, introduced to organisms through breathing in Xen spore, and untreated open wounds on the body. Observations have also concluded that seemingly all native Terran fauna has been rendered extinct, save for the perimeter of the zone which have rapidly declining populations of all species, both floral and fauna.

Research and Containment Protocol
Due to the highly durable nature of the infestation, complete eradication is not an option and strictly forbidden. This is due to the infestations ability to return from seemingly total annihilation with increased resistance to whatever had cleansed it before. Research is to be conducted by ERF 1A-19, with help from various partner installations which will carry out expeditions and observations, sending their data and assets to ERF 1A-19 via airborne methods and wireless communication for further research.

Each of these installations, including ERF 1A-19, are equipped with extensive Xen infestation cleansing tech, which constantly holds back floral matter, while taking care not to entirely eradicate the infestation in the area. Along with these defenses are automated hostile defenses to exterminate Xen fauna attempting to breach these installations. Failure to uphold these security measures will result in the total eradication of facility personnel in an estimated 24 hours, followed by total consumption by the zone in a matter of 72 hours. This has been exhibited multiple times over multiple Research Outposts which are now defunct and lost. All installations are equipped with equipment and technology to treat all matter of Xen afflictions, from common wounds to bacterial and parasitic infections. These resources are not always reliable however, due to the highly adaptive and mutative nature of Xen nature, and often result in the medical evacuation of personnel to safer locations outside the zone.

All Universal Union assets located within or near the zone that are still operational are to be equipped with Xenian outbreak cleansing defenses. Most notable are City 19 and City 21, which are lined with maximum force anti-infestation technology, including preemptive cleansing of a few miles around these important assets. The outer perimeter of Anomaly 0011 is not contained and still expanding outwards. There are not enough resources available to set up a truly reliable perimeter over its massive sprawl, and thus is kept under heavy observation for sudden changes in expansion speed.

Priority Research & Observation Reports
Research Report #009
Subject: Infestation Resiliency
After test #018, an anomalic observation has been made in the Xen floral matter. Test #018 was meant to document the response of Anomaly 0011 to common Xen eradication techniques. It should be noted that these are techniques that are common at the time of documentation, and may not be in use at a later date. Using highly combustive chemicals to burn away infestation, a section of one square mile was designated to be totally eradicated. A team of trained specialists were sent in with industrial grade chemical flamethrowers, and after approximately a week, an entire square mile was completely cleansed of floral matter, all the way to a microscopic level.

What we documented in the following week, was that Xen infestation began to return in the area, despite chemical substance saturating the area that was meant to kill any further infestation. Not only did this infestation return, but it did not seem to return from the surrounding infestation. Instead, Xen infestation seemingly appeared spontaneously and anomalously from nothing. It was noted via sprouts of Xen floral matter within the sector. Within the following week, the section saturated with chemical matter was approximately 70% consumed in Xen infestation.

Test #021 took place after 100% consumption of the chemical field. The same method of cleansing, industrial grade chemical flamethrower, was used. While floral matter showed signs of destruction, it was noted that fuel required to burn away matter in a cubic meter had increased by 200%. This observation showed that not only did Xen infestation within the anomaly return from seemingly nothing, but it also somehow remembered what had eradicated it before, and grew with a new resistance towards it.

This raises questions as to just how resilient the Xenian Malignancy Zone is. While it doesn't seem to adapt to minor, resistant cleansing, it is still leaving the question as to what can truly eradicate the infestation. In an extreme hypothetical, what would happen if it were to return from a nuclear bombardment? Would it return with a resistance to nuclear fire and radiation? Research will continue into a proper method of eradication.

Research Report #076
Subject: Xen Floral Composition Discrepancy
After extensive research into the actual composition of floral Xen matter, a discrepancy has been noted when cross-referencing data from floral Xen matter obtained from the Xenian Malignance Zone, and common Xen infestations located globally. After comparing the cellular makeup of zone flora with Xen flora from Sectors 2A, 14, 17, 21 and further, a peculiar detail, or the lack of, was noted in the structure of Anomaly 0011's flora. Xen flora retrieved from within Anomaly 0011 appeared to be exactly the same as cellular composition from foreign infestations, indicating that the zone's infestation is made up of the exact same species of plant that is common across the globe. The only exceptions are the adaptive defenses it takes in order to resist eradication after it returns from cleansing.

By itself, this is not a remarkable observation. The issue this presents however, is further confusing the observations of the anomaly as a whole. As it stands, Anomaly 0011 spreads at a much faster rate than normal Xen infestations, at a rate of over ten times as fast as your average infestation in an optimal environment. Despite this, cellular composition and genetic indications do not indicate that this should be possible. This has rendered our understanding of the anomaly's spread obsolete, as it was theorized that its spread was due to a genetic mutation in plant species for faster spread. This is of course not the case, and leaves us searching for further clues as to how this infestation seems to spread so quickly.

Observation Report #103
Subject: Aquatic Spread
RO 1A-6 has reported after a recent expedition that Anomaly 0011 is spreading at an alarming rate within the Pacific Ocean. It should be noted that original observations showed that the Xenian Malignance only spread through coral and shores. After a unique deep sea expedition, it has been observed that the infestation has spread over fifty miles out over the Pacific ocean floor. Further observations are being made, and plans are being put together for a new aquatic research outpost to be constructed down south in Mexico for further observation.

Compound 1A Critical Threat Brief
Compound 1A Critical Threat Brief
Priority Level: CRITICAL
Subject: Global Projection
After extensive research into Anomaly 0011, a projected date has been observed by the U.P.R.D. AICD pertaining to the rapid spread of the designated "Xenian Malignance Zone". It has been firmly concluded that Anomaly 0011 spreads at an alarming rate, at over ten times the speed of normal Xenian infestations. While this spread may seem slow in present time, we urge with utmost importance that immediate action must be taken in order to slow, halt, and possibly eradicate the infestation, at all cost. Infestation rate seems to be rising at a slow but gradual level, and failure to properly contain this infestation may result in the very likely loss of Terran stability on a global scale. This is due to the highly invasive nature of the "Xenian Malignance Zone." Immediate action must be taken in any form seen fit by upper Global Union Administration, U.P.R.D. administrative leads, and Overwatch, whether it be in extensive resource allocation, or further response from offworld.

PROJECTED GLOBAL STATUS IS AS FOLLOWS:

CURRENT XENIAN MALIGNANCE GLOBAL CONSUMPTION: ~3% | WESTERN REGION OF SECTOR 1, "U.S.A.", INCLUDING COASTAL REGION

XENIAN MALIGNANCE GLOBAL CONSUMPTION AFTER 25 YEARS: ~31% | ENTIRETY OF SECTOR 1. HALF OF SECTOR 2. MASSIVE REGIONS OF PACIFIC AND ATLANTIC SECTOR.

XENIAN MALIGNANCE GLOBAL CONSUMPTION AFTER 30 YEARS: ~45% | MAJORITY OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. INFESTATION ZONE TENDRILS REACHING EASTERN HEMISPHERE SHORES.

XENIAN MALIGNANCE GLOBAL CONSUMPTION AFTER ~50 YEARS: ~98% | MAJORITY OF TERRA CONSUMED. TOTAL XENIAN CONSUMPTION IMMINENT.

The results of this invasive terraforming is as follows:
- Complete degradation of all infrastructure due to malformed composition.
- A global environment which harbors a multitude of highly lethal bacteria and parasites which mutate at an alarming rate.
- A massive increase in Xen fauna to which Combine forces on Terra will not be able to properly counter.
- An environment that is unhabitable by the human species due to an increase in Xen spore particle and oxygen in the atmosphere.
- A global hostility level that is highly suspected to result in the death of over 99% of the human species.
- A possibility of total human extinction on Terra.
