The old city of Kabul had not known peace for at least 40 years before the arrival of the Combine on Earth.

By 2001, Afghanistan was embroiled in a civil war between two somehow defined sides, the Taliban and the Northern Alliance.

The portal storms unleashed chaos in the region and both factions collapsed along with the country. The Afghan lands were filled with Xenian life forms, especially with Antlions who saw the arid terrain as a perfect place to settle down and create colonies.

By the end of 2001, Afghanistan was already a failed state where all that could be found was death, destruction and hundreds of isolated factions fighting each other and the new exogenous life forms.

Due to the collapse of the nation, Afghanistan did not contribute any forces to the UN-led coalition when the Combine arrived in 2005.

When the first Combine aircraft appeared flying over the remote lands of Herat, they were met with high caliber fire and Stinger-type rocket launcher missiles that were still circulating in the region. The insurgent groups thought that the aircraft was nothing more than other Xenian wild life form that kept appearing to continue harassing them. They soon realized their mistake as the Combine in a few sweeps was able to establish some control in the north of the country and in the Afghan capital.

As soon as they won the 7 Hour War, the Combine decided to establish an urban center in Kabul, City 80, which soon began to overpopulate, taking in the entire Afghan population and other Central Asians relocated citizens.

The population of City 80 soon brought together all the individuals who years before had been killing each other in a bloody civil war and as everyone could expect, conflicts began to flourish. Brawls, arguments, fights and murders were becoming more and more common within the city walls.

The Administration of City 80, aware of the growing social unrest, tried to forge its own ideology by mixing Collaborationism with the teachings of the Koran in a desperate attempt to maintain the sociostability. The CCA tried to present the arrival of the Combine as a representation of God and the Civil Administration as the equivalent of a prophetic institution.

Although on one hand the introduction of some principles of Islam in public life succeeded in reducing conflict, on the other hand it radicalized those who had a much more fundamentalist interpretation since they considered a true heresy to mix the teachings of Mohammed with what happened on Earth after the Black Mesa Incident.

Conflicts increased again, the fights no longer occurred among the civilian population, members of the Administration and the Combine forces began to become targets of attacks that occurred more and more frequently.

Eventually, the Combine decided to purge the regime and sent a detachment of the Overwatch to bring order to the city, which was on the verge of collapse. The Overwatch forces were met with an intense anti-citizen activity, virtually everyone in City 80 was armed and a full-blown civil war was underway.

The city collapsed and the population began to spread throughout Afghanistan and Central Asia, City 80 has been classified as a Failed City and little else is known about it since.

Will Afghanistan remain the graveyard of empires?
