(Area on the map)

(Hatchet Lake Saskatchewan CA)

(A Member of the former Hatchet Lake RCMP Detachment aided with a first nations tracker bullsquid nick named "Chenjak")
Real History.
The hamlet of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation (HLFN) are situated in the Athabasca Basin region on the southeastern shore of Wollaston Lake, the largest bifurcation lake in the world, draining naturally in two directions. The lake is known in Dene as “Axe” Lake, and the community is called “The Post” to outlying dwellers of the lake.
Access to the hamlet is by ice road in the winter and by barge during the open water season. Year round access is provided by two airline companies that operate scheduled flights to and from the surrounding communities and southern Saskatchewan. There is a desire for a year-round road to connect the community to the south.
Portal Storms / Liberation.
During the time of the seven hour war as most of the federal government of Canada's resources and attention were shifted towards fortifying the main cities such as Toronto Vancouver British Columbia Ottawa Calgary and Halifax many first nations reservations found themselves increasingly pressed by the xenian invasions, Once a proud people living off the land and subsisting off of the caribou that had migrated into the area every year the native food sources were threatened as xen life began to take over bullsquids in particular had been known to cause immense trouble both for livestock and for the nearby settlement of Hatchet Lake which prior to the storms had a population of 1700 people.
The Invasion/Aftermath.
Being so far away from the large major cities and having already been ravaged by the xenian fauna following the portal storms in the early 2000's aside from a handful of buildings needing to be burned/destroyed due to having been contaminated by xenian spores and mold by the volunteer fire services within the town in cooperation with the first nations council within the city. for some time it wasn't uncommon to see a chinook or a C130 Supply plane fly over or near the small settlement.
Occupation / Radio Silence. "Quiet they might hear".
For many the invasion of another alien force on earth wasn't overtly surprising to the towns people following the initial xen invasion which still ravages the country-side to this day in the aftermath of earths surrender Hatchet lake found itself alone...with no connection to the outside world safe for a few terrifying accounts received by the local RCMP Detachment by radio about large god like synthetic beasts with un-imaginable strength now having felt the crippling weight of both the outside world and now the collapse of the federal government now at a population of 1100 the People of Hatchet lake at the decision of the Tribal council decided to close the town off to outsiders and forbid any attempts at contacting the outside world following the reported accounts from the RCMP, With no knowledge of the suppression field most believed that the inability to conceive children to be some curse or an omen of the ancestors wrath perhaps, This was until the horrifying accounts made by the few refugees who had managed to escape the combines clutches told their stories before the council.
Occupation / Today. "Freedom through silence"
Through the years there had been murmurs or attempts by small groups of warriors from the reservation stating they should fight back but these attempts were typically shut down rather quickly by council elders or by the women in the settlement today the settlement is defended by the former RCMP detachment who had managed to train the local police service in-order to protect their settlement and enforce the rule of laws. In the few times outsiders have stumbled upon the settlement they have been given an ultimatum to either undergo a series of trials and join the settlement or to be killed in order to ensure the safety.
Rumors / Legends
In the year 2011 it was rumored by an outsider claiming to have come from the western most part of Canada that there was allegedly a form of Canadian government in exile the proof for this was a fiery passionate speech given five days over broad band radio by someone claiming to be a representative of the last remnants of the Canadian government however these claims have never been substantiated and are likely in actuality some Ham radio operator playing with peoples emotions in-order to motivate resistance efforts as of 2019 there have been no sign of the government it's believed the entirety of the Canadian forces either opted for surrender and de-mobilization in Halifax and were either conscripted and sorted into Civil Protection or became alongside their American counter-parts the basis for the transhuman arm. Interestingly enough a handful of bullsquids are kept within the village used for their extraordinary sense of smell these bullsquids are hand raised from eggs as trackers used by tribal hunters and trackers to find and hunt for food in the outlands. The lake though mostly filled with invasive leeches still serves as a small fresh water reservoir and source of food as leeches are roasted and sold in the towns market.
Life / Survival
Due to the harsh reality presented to the residents of Hatchet lake luxuries such as electricity are often not always guaranteed and such are rationed to certain times of the year namely the harsh northern winters, It's more common to find wood burning stoves or fire-places as opposed to central heating as electricity is rationed through the spring and summer months in-order to help ensure the long term survival of the now isolationist settlement since fossil fuels are no longer available to the group only by scavenging from fallen settlements and houses outside of the reservation (Often done at night under the cover of darkness) and in 2019 these resources are an incredibly rare commodity as most sources have long since been used or have expired the town's limited fuel is currently held and rationed by the tribal council and only allotted to citizenry in the evenings during the winter months. In the spring months crops are planted being partially in the Canadian shield it makes crop growth somewhat of a challenge however these seasoned veteran farmers are experienced in using the land and soil in-order to grow whatever the land will accept which often results in a mixed Autumn harvest.
Leadership / City Structure
The current leader as of 2019 of the hatchet lake tribe is chief Miskwaadesi (painted turtle) who responds to the tribal council which acts as essentially the city council they advise and decide on actions within the community and work with the former RCMP and current First nations police service in-order to ensure the safety and survival of both the settlement and it's people the city has it's own "CWU" if you will called the Hatchet lake work collective formed during the time of the portal storms as a response to the immense destruction caused the HLWC Works alongside the HLPC (Hatchet Lake Police Service) to maintain the city using the resources left from the time of the invasion and items brought by the "Rogue" RCMP members.
