City 24 V3 - Updates

We'd do this if we could have the damn congress. I had plans to limit vortigaunt rights ICly but then it all got scrapped because dystopia.
What if you wanted to have a based congress but god said "the meeting was rigged from the start"?

oh boy, more useless space for 1 dude

One piece of advice I'd have to make City 24 feel more in line with Valve's architectural vision by increasing the amount of Combine-modifications on buildings. Essentially more Combine-metal components patching up previously broken windows, holes in the walls, fences and other structures that could no longer could be repaired due to the fact that the conventional way of producing building materials has mostly halted.

I understand that City 24 is meant to be a pristine, luxury "paradise" of sorts, however virtually nothing in the world of Half-Life should be spared from urban decay and even in the most loyalist of locations, many things should have since been broken down should be replaced with elements of Combine architecture.

Honestly, on top of this the buildings are in a dire need of some diversification. 90% of the buildings on this map have the exact same textures. They could be easily confused for being a mega-structure and not an array of different buildings.

The map isn't even out, imagine complaining already. :cool:
A pretty bad attitude to have towards criticism in general.

Just because a map isn't out yet doesn't mean people can't see certain trends developing, or problems that have been observed in previous maps being remade.

Using this much space for a single character who the general population will never interact with just doesn't seem worth it. People have seen their fair share of huge CA offices that just don't make sense.

Just because it's labelled the CA Room, why do we need to use it for one specific CA character? The CCA is a very large faction; could be used for BOE, BOI, CCA..- list goes on.

Couple of misconceptions here: the map is not short on space if you use that word purely in the volume sense. Large parts of C24 are gone, and both the sewers and CAB area use televators to take people there. So due to hammer map sizes being a cube, these three layers can be stacked vertically without impacting each other. So rather than there being more empty void, there is a bigger office.

If you use space in terms of resource cost: it is basically a box. If you make it smaller it will still be a box. Short of removing it entirely there are no significant savings to be had, even if you do remove it the savings are minimal and not really worth it.

So IMHO I do not see why having a large CA office isn't worth it. The only thing you can say is that you don't like it, as the size of the thing is purely down to taste.

City Administrator office

The City Administrator office. Mullin. Not the Civil Administration office. As far as I remember the Administrator was a single person, hence the complaint.

And, my comment still stands; why does it have to be used for them? Just because that is what it's labelled, it can be adjusted when we launch with the map; the name means nothing.

big =/= good

big =/= good
I never said it was good. I was just clarifying that (and why) it being so big has no negative impact on other places of the map due to taking up space (which really is not valuable, not even a tenth is used) or valuable Hammer resources (as a smaller office would take the same a mount).

Whether you -LIKE- it or not, that is entirely up to your opinion. But there shouldn't be a 'is it worth it' discussion.

yeah we understand that it doesn't consume hammer resources or whatever

one of the main issues with c24 currently is the fact that it's massive

pointlessly massive

Pointlessly massive is the keyword. The density of RP hubs is super important, on c24 it takes two minutes to get between important places on the map and ten minutes to navigate the entire cityside map. Whereas something like d47 it takes 2 minutes to navigate the entire map (Cityside) and then 20 seconds to get between RP hubs (and usually they're within line of sight of eachother). So it's way easier to find people to RP with, and it comes off a lot more naturally.

The way the plaza seems to be working looks like it's moving in that direction, I think everyone just has a sore spot for 'please dont make massive roads / parks / side areas / offices that no one will use'. The larger an area, the longer it takes to navigate and the less important it is - so making an area as small as possible, and the time to walk from one area to another as small as possible - and even the visibly being high, makes for a much better map in terms of actually being played.
