My Pride and joy. The peak understanding of what truly is a new world business. We don't strive for perfection, perfection is not guaranteed- but we sure as hell come very close. Italian heritage, only the best for our customers. Expansion is inevitable, no one can stand in the way of us.
The Beginning
They say a man is the sum of his craft, the weight of his stitches and the cut of his cloth. If that's true then I am a man sewn together by necessity, for a purpose, durable and strong I was stitched to leave a lasting legacy. My name is Enzo Valente, a tailor from an average Italian family, a craftsman of the old world who forever long continues to bring forth the teachings of old. Now in the shadows of this so-called new order, I ply my trade and build my empire where I can, threading the needle between survival and dignity.
I remember my short upbringing well. A lifeline of family blood built into the final cornerstone- ME. This wretched existence brings no favours and gives no lifelines- for what I have worked for and what I shall always work for is built by me, for me.
City Twenty-Four is not home, at least not for me. It is a cage with illusions of streets where the hum of the Combine's presence replaces that of which I would have found so familiar. I live a life of luxury now, after working so hard for so long- perhaps I've thread the needle correctly all this way, maybe it's time to finish this piece and move on. I remain ever headstrong, readily improving my stance, just a tailor they say... No- I am far more than just City Twenty-Fours best tailor. My purpose is larger than that, the world shall see it.
Ascension
They never had a choice.
The people had spoken, or rather, the people had been spoken for. The process had been elegant, seamless and inevitable. The silence is heavy now- people plot and scheme it feels like, do they hate me now? I know I will do the right thing- the good thing. I am the right person for the job, I made it happen. They will thank me in the end, I know they will... Can I tell myself that? Do people stare at me in the halls- why is my office so busy, I can't think- I need to think.
Manifestation
I thought hard. I fought hard. I won.
The fundamental shifting of power beneath my feet, it was inevitable, though it does not dull my satisfaction. They were outmanoeuvred, outlasted and outperformed. The previous Administration trusted their own plans far too much, and yet what did it cost them...? Everything. This new title, it weighs heavy on my heart and soul, it could be my undoing... The final chapter of my story. Or... I prosper.
The threat is greater than ever before, from all angles, terrorism, infighting, political agenda- will it ever end... We will force it to end.
I've given everything for this. My conscience and my body, in its place now- a purpose, a certainty.
Justification
My dearest friend. My closest companion. Gone just like that. Wyatt Callaway.... A man I could trust in this fractured world, cut down by terrorists. He was steady where others wavered, a voice that tempered my own edge, now the silence that he leaves behind echoes louder than any speech I could give. The hole that remains within my heart with him gone cannot be fulfilled, will it ever be fulfilled? I cannot allow the indulgence of grief, not here, not now. But I feel it gnawing at me, the weight of such pressing against my chest- I cannot breathe. Still... The machine moves, and I must move with it. His killers will learn that order does not break with a single bullet - or stomp to the head. His memory will be carved into the foundation that continues to grow. If nothing else, they have hardened my resolve- our resolve. For Wyatt, for the city, for my people.
The End
The final moments, plagued with opportunity. The pain of betrayal crept upon my dearest friend's face, Orwell- I am sorry. I fear what may come, what has already happened. This was not the way it was meant to end, the pain I felt leaving you behind, alone and without a final companion to trust. We were to usher in a new world, amongst the ash of our fallen species, off the back of an eternal empire that knows no limits. A failure.
This was my final stitch, my ultimate piece. A humanity that fails to cooperate is no humanity at all. In my darkest hour, my light was brightest- the Combine, the greed they granted us... What comes of them when faced with instinct?
I hope in the finals days of this futile existence, all those who challenged my very body join me in this never-ending hell. While I rest, my job is done and with it you will all join me.
