In memoriam - v2

I came here nearly two years ago off the back of leaving a genre that I once moved away from following it's growing political upheaval and other various matters I won't go into detail over.

And since then, I've experienced both a handful of chill people who know how to dedicate themselves to their characters, making them layered and interesting people to both experience and be around. But I've also met some bad eggs who I won't waste my time on labeling because I'm here to be a laidback person here and simply just RP with whatever happens and whatever cards I get.

So no in particular order.

@Felix - Felix Poelking + Eleanor Marchand, both two characters who stuck with me early on both as my first rebel and first civilian who rose to some notability over the last two years, be it either questionable scientific experiments or simply ragebaiting one of our rebel cell members, it was highly memorable.

@Sushi082 - Absolute peak. The ability to perfectly depict a man in a broken system, battling inner demons and eventually coming out stronger on the opposite side as Michael? Perfect.

@RedHotGinger - The most accurate depiction of a person who had the system gang up on you to kick and beat you down until it thought it'd won, only to simply bounce back again and again and again. Not to mention being one of the few oldest characters here.

@Marco - The ability to simply add character to characters in a faction where following the rules as gospel is expected, not daring to move from your station and act as a simple minded 'robot' and simply being looked down upon for simply moving to express yourself as a character with deep regrets instead of blindly following what the regime wanted you to think, someone who's been emotionally torn down and looking for what little comfort she can find knowing full well the actions she's committed, only to be cut down for simply wanting to find some emotional refuge in amongst it all as 078? Absolute cinema, you gave me one of if not one of the most emotionally complex experiences as 363 and I probably won't forget what happened on that character, despite what some people might think of the two.

@wysiwyg - Despite the amount of characters you went through, Sophie, Marina, 399, PATROL-6, VICE-9, 458, 933, 887, 324, Theda. I can go on but that's most if not all of the characters I've interacted with. And it's not bad that you've gone through so many characters, people die under dystopian regimes. It's a given, but on these characters you put them into the spotlight and do what you can to make sure people remember their presence.

@Leko - One of the more older beings on this server, and someone who I always made time to interact with where I could, be it as Stephanie wanting to insert your mandated intake of hopium or as Melissa simply lurking in the slums to get some Italian audiobooks (you still never got me them), whilst our interactions were brief, they were enjoyable nontheless.

1763380276768.png

@nora - I needn't say more. Peak, distilled. Able to simply act out a character who seemed to be in it for themselves and not as a happy-go-lucky person, a person who'd sold almost all if not every last part of their moral dignity to simply grasp what shreds of power you had. What happened between Stephanie and Juniper was an arc I didn't expect in the slightest and I'm satisfied with the story the both of them told and where they are currently.

@The Sniper - All the more the same, able to portray an emotionally complex character who was fighting a war that appeared to have no end. Her allies and companions seemingly being cut down one after another, to try and find comfort in what acquaintances she had left only for more of them to be taken from her, eventually dying in a botched operation because of rushed decisions. Tragic, yes. But well, you bounced back eventually. Once again continuing to contribute nothing but peak into this server.

@Wraygun - The ability to depict evil easily is simply something I wasn't able to get into, either be it by my character's design or simply just not being able to get into that mindset, something you had no issue with. An ability to depict someone who was simply just out for themselves, who would've ripped the humanity from a person just to meet a quota and forcing someone who kept to what little morals they had to bend, eventually becoming as bad as the person who she hated? I've said it multiple times. Peak.

I could, sit here and write these paragraphs all day, but I'd have this post literally be a mile long. So I'm going to rattle off some more people very briefly. Note that I do have my own good opinions on you all, I just wish I had more time to properly write them all down.

As I said, I could've sat here and typed for another 2 hours about all of these people. But almost all of the people on this list have simply been absolute PEAK roleplayers to interact with, all of them telling their own stories as civilians, rebels, units, vorts or whatever else they could. 'Cause at the end of the day, this is a RP server, we're all here to RP, tell stories and have a good time. Not to be caught up with OOC, backdoor or closed off drama and arguments, that's some child shit and we need to begin leaving that behind for V3, we're all here to have a good time and relax.

After seeing an old gmod pose collection I made in the forums, I soon realized the amount of characters that have been lost to time.

And so, with my shitty memory, I would like to remember these individuals:

@NitroSky Played Warren Goodwin, your character was great and I absolutely loved it. I do hope your marriage is going well.

@Tommyboi Played Tom J Husky, I can't remember our interactions well but that store interaction where we just kept complimenting each other was great.

@Killian Played Rhea Ilyava, sadly I can't remember most of our interactions, but I believe they were very good, and I hope you are doing well.

@Zebra You were banned, but the character you played (Dave Mcallen) quite literally changed the course of history in the entire district, thank you for being a great rper for me and others.

@Purple Knight Still plays, and isn't really forgotten but I remember your char Ronald Sykes being a bit of a goof. He was pretty cool

@Garratz I think you played Hoxworth? I don't remember having interactions with you, but seemingly you were very important during Alaska, thanks.

That spanish couple? During the first days in Terminal 7 with my Laura Maxwell char, I met a spanish couple. Weird, I know. ERP? Not sure, either way... Their RP was great, and I remember the spanish guy getting a CWU job then just, dissapearing. I wish I could remember their char names but sadly...I deleted my Laura Maxwell bio, so they are forever lost to history. Sorry

That is sadly all I can remember, thank you for reading.

Being a citizen main for four years does something to you. I've seen, witnessed and gone through so much since my defection from Impulse in late 2021 that, like all of us, it'd be impossible to list all I've been grateful for this half-decade. The earliest and most formative era of my time on Willard has to be my experience witnessing (but sadly not participating in) @Khrushchev (Merlinsclaw)'s Futurist movement. Yes, I know, "unc speaking", but it's the single biggest factor that got me into Political RP and really opened my eyes to my then minge-pilled brain that a different, serious type of roleplay was possible. Really all of my early time on Willard as the, admittedly, not very well roleplayed Keiichi Ishikawa continues to be a highlight for me. A 16 year old can only be so good at writing, after all. Being the unknowing target of rebel infiltration by @Chimeric, sharing banter only to be reunited actual years later with @Dr. Ternith Plague, my co-leadership position in the Department of Business ( :yudodis: miss u DOB...) with @KG!, the O'Hairs, it all has a soft spot in my heart.

As both my real life self and my roleplay abilities matured, I got to playing what is still my favorite character I've ever portrayed on Willard: Takeo Nakamura. Coincidentally also a middle-aged Japanese man. I'm not biased.
Never has my heart swelled with pride only to fall immediately to a gut-wrenching sorrow like it was carrying out my shenanigans first in Industrial 24, and later in Terminal 7. Frankly everyone I collaborated with and (attempted) to backstab played their parts almost perfectly. @AgathaL and @nora's spearheading of the Constructivist Movement and Citizen Watch respectively were Takeo's first taste of power, a high that he'd never be able to stop dreaming about topping. @Lord Beckett's backroom dealings with @Wraygun, @quest, @Inspector Orlok and the other Farmouth people was some of the best political intrigue I've seen done on this server, yet its sudden and dubious end is still admittedly disappointing almost a year after. I did get to call @Cocohop's character a harlot and then blow my head smoove off afterwards, which you know, makes everything worthwhile in the end.

My own growing distaste and lack of motivation hampered my future enjoyment of V2. I did try to recently come back with other characters, but that never went anywhere. For all my grievances with how Willard V2 turned out, I can't be too mad at it. I still proudly hold the [WN] tag on my discord profile everywhere due to my genuine love for this community. The atmosphere, tone and exceptional development work that's gone into developing this gamemode is stellar and irreplaceable. Especially without the latter, Willard would not be what it is today. And that's what the take away should be from this: don't be afraid to move on. This one sentence and failure to follow it in the minds of staff and playerbase alike has lead to what we've seen these past few months. I have big hopes for V3. And knowing the people behind it, I'm sure my trust isn't misplaced.

I started playing HL2RP in late 2021, all beginning here on Willard Networks. In my time, I've known many people, made many friends, and acquaintences. I don't have many screenshots anymore, as they've been lost to time, but I do remember people.

@Wraygun and @wysiwyg - Both of you, thank you for giving me the chance to roleplay with the CCR (CSF), I would not be where I am today within the server without you both.

@Tea - Nerd. Your roleplay is superb, keep it up. <3

@LizzyTheFluff - I've known you for EONS it seems at this point, met during an IC recruitment run for Civil Protection, and both ended up being denied for stupidity. We've both gone far.

@Cjtn10 - CEEEEJAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!! All of the roleplay I've ended up doing with you has been superb. From Fives, to Stephanie, I've enjoyed every second of it. Thanks. <3

@Omega and @Czesui - My favourite band of idiots, Marcus Cross and Elsa Becker. Thanks for the laughs along the end of V2 for the last few months, becoming my close friends. You left Alex to die.

Ty for the mention, you are great :D

By far my most fun time playing has to be in the following times with the following people:

Terminal 7 with Casey. The bar and politics RP was beyond peak for me at the time, and even after I started to be rich as fuck it still felt like a struggle and as if I had an end goal. Following people were Peak:

@Genny As Genevie Willow
@joe moter As Joe Moter
@Leko As Uwe Schulz
@MrMindBlow As Noah Majors
@icedout As [I'm sorry don't remember MoE director name]
@honzajevpoho As Jon Monir [peak character]

Then in City 24 it kinda died off for me and became boring, at the end of 24 and the month before the start of I24 the following people were peak:

@Acheif As Tyriel
@atlassu As Amelie
@honzajevpoho As Greynard

Lastly all the Shepherds, all you are peak:
@Czesui
@Acheif
@JayHog1992
@Dej
@fhs15
@Janek
[I'm missing a bunch but oh well]

Lastly some mentions for my cop:
@JayHog1992
@Nezoose
@EpicWolf For that amazing movie script
@Genny Once again as the lame cop who'd always yell at me but was nice[ish]

(edit: unironically the best serious roleplay from @RedHotGinger and @Ryan GearPermer (r.i.p))
(edit 2: and the best semi-serious roleplay from my velvet table guys, r.i.p joe, r.i.p ketterson, r.i.p malik)

@Processed_Grain I really liked that time I helped you acquire power.

@Lab Funny and creative fella, top tier roleplayer capable of making the server's biggest annoyance.
@Atom Friendly fella, also V3 should have the brain parasites be a playable whitelist.
@joe moter Will forever be who I think of when I think of Male 07, the character model is claimed.
@icedout Wouldn't have been able to do anything I've done with the MoE without your inspiring tenure
@nora Helped me to perceive just how much you could affect the world via the District Watch.

@Lord Beckett for cooking up some of the finest articles when he wasn't busy with accounting
@benignhostility You're like an evil Forest Gump, I think you've affected far more than you know
@LyingFox One of the friendliest fellow faction leads, even if the role isn't official
@Medi Those weather balloons were an inspired touch, the fact that no one stole one to bomb the airship floating over City 24 v3 earlier this year is arguably the biggest missed opportunity in Willard history
@Sushi082 Yards has been a great staple of City rp ever since I got back into the game

@DaSonic Great friend to William Stoner, yapping about what happened through the weeks really helped put things into perspective
@boots Thoroughly entertaining character writer, I don't know of a Civil Worker who has left a bigger impression than Idris
@Walker Nobody ever beat those cooking /mes, doubt anyone can
@Appetite Ruining Kebab walked tall so that the Vort player above could run, Pepe's restaurant will forever frame my appreciation for Xenian cuisine in this setting

@Czesui A great assistant right up until the point where they vanished! The ISD couldn't have been what it was without you

No doubt I am missing many.

I told @Imperator RAD-X a few weeks back now that I think Willard Networks V2 is one of the great works of the 21st century, and I stand by that. For all the complaints and gripes, this work of @Atle and all the rest of us has been truly too remarkable for any one forum post to begin to describe. There's a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote I have been letting hover under the newspaper and it goes like this:

“What can we see, read, acquire, but ourselves. Take the book, my friend, and read your eyes out, you will never find there what I find.”

This is necessarily far more true of a project like this, which derives its quality in no small part with how you chose to conduct your digital homunculi through their environments and social interactions.

None of us have enjoyed playing Willard precisely because all of us have enjoyed playing Willard.

@NitroSky Played Warren Goodwin, your character was great and I absolutely loved it. I do hope your marriage is going well.

Thanks old boy :) I'm glad you got unbanned after that year long hiatus.

RPing with Laura was always fun. And I'lll never forget doing your CWU test shift in City 8. That is still unironically the funniest and favorite shift I ever supervised lol.

"pepé gerard" was a stupid name. but "la cuisine de xen" was without a doubt one of my best store ideas

the whole character was based on some of the worst people i've interacted with online that year + a first-time reading of The Stranger by Camus. an ex-partygoer dying of cancer in his thirties trying to find some meaning at the end of his life; holding onto the fleeting dream of some shitty alien food restaurant like it's a family heirloom because he had nothing else going on and he just wanted to act like something mattered before he stopped mattering. so much of his personality revolved around making mountains of these kinds of molehills, his pettiness fucked him at every turn but he never gave up his penchant for being a disagreeable sourpuss, raging at the world while putting on a front of indifference for those who wanted to turn him to better ways

he went from getting forced to operate out of slums for being mouthy to cops, to somehow making his way to the middle class streets by striking deals with kaji. he went from helping undercover rebels kill 'problematic' gangsters, to passing information to cops between the beatings he provoked out of them. he got away with literal murder in the middle of the city (over an empty threat to shut down his store, ironically) and disposed of all the evidence; only to die a week later because he petitioned a little too hard to shut down his rivals. and every day between all that, he served xen food delicacies to his customers (which were of course, overpriced garbage scavenged from the sewers, served by exploiting the brand & labour of his vortigaunt chefs)

it was loads of fun all in the space of 1,5 months and i remember being surprised that he was still being mentioned a year onwards. it's deeply flattering to know that my occasional willard side quests live in peoples' heads three(!) years on in a meaningful way

Oh see I remember that a bit differently. If my memory serves me well it was a petition to reopen your restaurant that got shut down with a warning on Victory Street and then got forever stopped in the slums entryway. I definitely remember the Pepe ending being my go to memory for just how little defense business success actually got you if you ran afoul of the wrong state actors, something I would be unexpected party too far later. Such a fun little game.
