POST-WAR BACKGROUND
Home to THE Citadel, de facto capital of Earth, and the Combine's main headquarters.
Michael Hawk, a (former) resident of City Seventeen, lived in City Seventeen from 2013 to 2016, living through the construction of City Seventeen's citadel and its subsequent activation. Before City Seventeen, Mike Hawk spent several years living as a refuge at numerous Combine encampments with numerous other citizens, awaiting the eventual transportation to a large metropolitan area under the Combine's control.
Mike Hawk operated as a low-class suburban worker undergoing mainly independent work, primarily as an artist and graphic designer commissioned independently by the Bureau of Enlightenment for his work as well as making logos, advertisements, and pamphlets for businesses and other clients. Later on, he also operated as a bar manager for a local pub named "Ludwigs Lounge, "operating as his primary source of income and employment from 2014 to 2016.
During this period, Mike Hawk entered the City Seventeen's Citadel Art contest, earning second place for his piece, "Citadel Prime" and a monthly pension of 120 Credits lasting until the end of the year.
Mike Hawk would later opt to move away from City Seventeen, applying for a relocation ticket to move to City Twenty-Four, citing his primary reason as seeking further employment options away from City-Seventeen, though in reality this was only done concerning the Citadel's completion and a harsher crackdown on civil rights in the city.
Geneva, the Red Jewel of the Combine
"Living life in the Red Jewel of the Combine isn't so bad" was the assessment given by Mike Hawk, a testament to his own experiences and impression of the city. Having moved to the city after the approval of his relocation ticket to seek out greater job opportunities, Mike Hawk became swept up in the city's beauty and its heavy usage of patriotism and the color red in its iconography. Purchasing a low-class apartment and investing in some new clothes using his leftover credits from City-Seventeen, Mike Hawk sought to make a living in the Red Jewel city, seeking out a new social life as well as employment options, his ambitions seeking to carry him to the top of the city so that he may live in utter bliss and comfort.
Having made a few new friends and begun making a name for himself among the local Civil Protection for his diligence in safeguarding the city's beauty and its inhabitants' safety, he quickly became further engrossed in Combine ideology, attracting him to one of the many pro-unionist parties in the city, some of which his friends already belonged too.
Mike Hawk would find himself thrust into the lower echelons of one of the two dominant parties of City Twenty-Four after being persuaded into joining by one of his first friends he met in the city, becoming a lower member of the now-defunct Guard of National Consciousness. A radical humanist group advertising itself as humanist social-democracy, while in reality being more akin to a despotic cult of personality behind their two leaders, Mike Hawk was quickly swallowed up by the group's radical human-centrist ideology and the group's antagonistic xenophobic policy against Vortigaunts.
Becoming one of the group's many loyal members, Mike Hawk would participate in the group's pro-union and xenophobic rallies, earning enough of a reputation to score himself a meeting with the leader Christiaan Goldberg, who acted as the main editor for The Consciousness Newspaper, managing to persuade the leader into giving him an assistant editorial position for the newspaper through his charisma and loyalty to the party. Forming the basis of his early social life around the party's members as well as acting as an assistant editor for their newspaper, Mike Hawk found relative success surrounding the organization.
Eventually, however, Mike Hawk was forced to depart with his role in the party after he opted to pursue greater successes, leaving on a positive note with the party and keeping most of his social group intact after his departure, still maintaining their anti-vortigaunt, human-centrist xenophobic ideology.
After quitting his job as the assistant editor for The Consciousness newspaper, Mike Hawk sought a career in the arts once more, applying for a position within the Bureau of Enlightenment Artisan Department so that he could use his abilities for the benefit of the city and earn a good living with the position's benefits.
