So... what if there was a HL2RP documentary?

So I've had this idea for years now to create a documentary regarding hl2rp. It sounds really dumb but in reality this is a big part of Garry's Mod that not many people know about! The fact many people have sprung up communities based on other communities for I think 11 years now? 12? I don't really know, that's where I need your help.

I need a structured timeline and events from EVERY HL2RP community and server EVER. This will contain both on Serious and Non-Serious, however more focus is put on Serious.

This is a big project so I'm not going to take it on alone. If you'd like to help just start spilling information either here or to me on discord. My discord is cloudbucket#9487 if you'd like to further elaborate.

I'll start by making graphics to represent a timeline once enough information has been gathered. If you know of any other sources please let me know!

So start posting what you know! You can...

a) Name all the communities

or

b) elaborate on a specific community, where it came from, how long it lasted, owners etc.

to keep it better organized.

Servers: Combine Military Roleplay and City Roleplay

Founder: Parashock
Noted Developers: Taco

Synopsis: Birthed into CRP from another community. Opened up CMRP also. Bounced back and forth with server and community activity. Born with clockwork but soon experimented with HELIX schema as a test for Nebulous. A strong population in the 2016 era with CRP however focus soon switched to CMRP which held a steady population but soon declined.

Birthed Communities: ? Halo Roleplay Server headed by Taco.

Please correct any mistakes in this if seen. Missing many details so please provide more! Yes yes!

SCG had nothing to do with Nebulous at all, nor was Helix made by anyone involved with SCG. Neb was birthed from Lemonpunch in 2016 when it died and made Helix over 2017-2018.

Oh gotcha. I know Helix was headed by nebulous but it’s to my understanding that SCG used it on their servers with permission to act as a sort of test.

This may help.

Having experience with single-handed video production and also having researched HL2RP gamemodes and communities, this project strikes me as far too ambitious. What you might be better off doing is making a small scale video, perhaps of the early days, before trying to cover all the communities.

If you wanted to cover the inspiration behind the science fiction story, then the DNA is pretty clear in stories like The Dalek Invasion of Earth and Day of the Daleks. Which were likely based on themes like War of the Worlds and Nazism.

If you wanted to cover the roleplay background leading up to the HL2RP era then there's a Steam guide with some interesting notes:

I've made an archive that has lots of pages on HL2RP, including communities, events, and bits of culture:

Some of the communities I wrote about didn't run HL2RP servers though, so you'd have to pick them out. And for every community I come across that ran a HL2RP server, I come across a bunch more, so I doubt if I archived even 5% of them.

Lets say there's hundreds of such communities, and for each one you'd want a few bits of content and want to say something about them. You'd need thousands of bits of content. Managing and editing that could take a lot of time and motivation, so this is why I'd start off small.

You'd also want to try to bring storylines in, like the evolution of culture, the development of the frameworks and plugins, the impact that different sizes of community and maps had on gameplay, and the different approaches to roleplay in terms of item collecting vs character-driven motivations, and the balance between serious and casual roleplay.

If you wanted permission to use bits of video content then feel free to clip anything I uploaded on HL2RP:

Pistol P has a few good recordings of most of the communities of the past but just that, recordings. Some diluted with personal takes.
Afiak that isn't PistolP's channel, he's got his own one under Crimemovies that he hasn't posted on in 6+ months.

Most of his stuff also got taken down because someone threatened legal action.

Where's Lancer smh.

I don't remember exactly when Digital Soul Roleplay (DSRP) shut down but it would be a while prior to when I joined TnB in 2009ish. It had a good consistent population, had a funny name and its own Tacoscript. Hudson's link to gmod roleplay above outlines TnB's timeline accurately but I only ever played its HL2 servers. Overall it felt like half the community was playing for the script items and the other half were really playing their characters. I thought that was a good ratio at the time. The events leading up to, during and after the transition from City 18 to City 8 were some of my fondly remembered times of video gaming.
