SPADES

An out of work and aging doctor with a passion for medicine, and a penchant for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Reaching middle-age has catalyzed her disenfranchisement with the current state of the world.
NAME: Hannah GilchristCaroline_Todd.png
AGE: 39
NATIONALITY: German-American
PLACE OF BIRTH: Anaheim, California
EDUCATION: Clinical Pharmacology MSc

HEIGHT: 5'10"
WEIGHT: 70KG
EYES: Gray
HAIR: Black and cut short
NOTABLE FEATURES: A large burn on her left cheek, Californian accent with a very slight German twinge.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
A tall woman with her dark hair cut short and tidy. Her face is sharp and angular, and she has a noticeable burn mark on her left cheek.
Her default expression is analytical and blank, but her large eyes express a wealth of muted emotion.

CHARACTER TRAITS

1661136515161.pngCompassionate

Despite everything she has been through, Spades still wants to help those less fortunate than her. While her own safety is important to her, she's willing to risk it to make sure others are safe.

She receives a lot of personal satisfaction from performing surgery and medical procedures - even on those she despises. In terms of immediate gratification, there is no greater act than saving a life.

1661137228500.pngSlow to trust

Spades is petrified of the two halves of her life meeting; she's has several issues in the past where her cover was nearly blown. These events, among a lifetime of watching people stab each other in the back, has taught her that sometimes it's better to let a situation play itself out for a while before stepping in - if at all possible, of course.

1661138021664.pngConciliatory

Spades is, at heart, a pacifist. Although she does occasionally resort to violence, she never allows it to be her first course of action. When she finds herself in trouble, she can almost always be seen bargaining, reasoning, or smooth-talking her way out of it.

When threatened, she tries to talk the assailant down, probing for anything she might be able to use as leverage to non-violently de-escalate the issue.

1661137882030.pngStubborn

Despite her compassionate and conciliatory nature, internally Spades is quite set in her ways. She believes there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. She is very adaptive, and changes her opinions and methods when presented with better ones, but she struggles to do this in the moment - she'll frequently return after an argument to apologize and explain that she now agrees with them, having had time to think.

1661139603581.pngEducated

Spades dedicated her entire life to education, before the Combine arrived. She achieved a Master's Degree in Clinical Pharmacology, and was on track to pursue a PhD in the same subject before the Seven Hour War.

She has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge when it comes to the synthesis and application of medicines, as well as a pretty extensive knowledge on medical treatments, chemistry, and trivia.

1661138538472.pngVindictive

While her compassion for others is powerful and sometimes overrides her own self needs, it is conditional: those who harm, or threaten to harm, the people Spades care about no longer receive her empathy.

A life of abiding and complying has left her pent-up and bitter when it comes to those who hurt others. Sometimes Spades has to remind herself that these people are still human, no matter how little they show it.

BACKSTORY

Hannah Gilchrist was born in 1978 in Anaheim, California. Her mother was a teacher and first generation immigrant from Germany. Her father was a surgeon and a Californian local.

From an early age she felt a pressure to succeed from her parents. Her academic success was likely the result of her parent’s depriving her of socialization and leisure activities in favor of her studies.

By the time she left home for University, she cut contact with her family. Her initial plan was to drop out, but she found a genuine passion in medicine, and went on to study a masters in Clinical Pharmacology.

After working for a few years at a pharmaceutical laboratory, she was on track to study for a PhD. This was, however, in 2004.

The Seven Hour War brought much change to Hannah’s life; she was no longer able to study for her PhD, she no longer had a job, and over the next few years she would be relocated constantly.

Keeping her head down, Hannah complied with every change to her life, until she eventually found herself at City 46.

The year was 2013, and due to a bureaucratic mix up, she wasn’t allocated a room in a housing block. She slept in the slums, and made friends with some of the outcasts and miscounts.

Eventually Hannah was assigned living arrangements and moved to the city, but she made frequent trips to the slums to provide medical treatment to those who needed it. This continued for several months.

Civil Protection declared these slums off limits at risk of amputation. Hannah knew a way to get in and out of the slums without being detected, but on one of her trips a sweep was initiated.

Civil Protection killed anyone and everyone still within the slums, in preparations for the "renovations" they were planning. This sweep had a scorched earth policy. Large sections of the slums were lit ablaze to smoke anti-citizens and rebels out of their hiding spots.

During her escape back to the city, she suffered several burns, but remained undetected. Most of her injuries healed, but a significant section of her left cheek is still scarred.

After this, the slums were renovated into more apartment blocks and stores. People celebrated the event, or at least, they seemed to: there was nowhere in the city left unmonitored, nowhere people could truly speak their mind. You couldn't tell if the guy praising Civil Protection on their latest genocide was an honest-to-God loyalist or just trying not to get sent to Nova Prospekt.

Hannah spent another three months in City 46 before her next relocation.

Since then, she has been relocated from city to city, until finally arriving at City 24.

Jenny

You were my first real friend in this city. You had severe amnesia, several previous injuries, and seemed to be in some sort of stupor. I had to fix your legs and get you back on your feet after you fell from a great height. You gave me purpose in a new place.

You are
innocent, perhaps to a fault, but you are kind, and you are determined. There's not much more you can ask a friend for.

We don't see each other as much anymore. I'm sorry.
===
Oops; I'm sorry for doing too much speed and having a breakdown in front of you. Not my finest hour.

I'm glad you show up to the clinic more often, though!

Tony DeNiro

I wish you'd just left me alone.

You had no idea how much danger you put me in, or why I had to do what I did, but I know you'd have done it all again given a chance.

You broke me, Tony.

I knew I was a good person before you came into my life, but now I'm not so sure.

I still think I am, but because of you, I'll never know.

"Red"

Even before I knew you, you had almost instantly gained my trust. You let me know there were people out there who could help me achieve my goals. You told me about your past, and listened to mine. You paid for my medical equipment, and found a good place to put the Clinic.

Without you, none of this would ever have happened. You give so much, and ask so little. You keep me safe, not just physically, but mentally - I never would have made it this far without you, and if I somehow could have? I would have enjoyed it half as much
.
====
I wish you'd be a bit more open with me, though... Sometimes I feel like you're hiding from me, but if you are, I know it's because you think it's for my own safety.
====
Even when you thought I was going to kill you, you didn't run. You might not have trusted me, and that hurts, but you didn't run. I don't know what that means.
====
I get it; I'd have done the same.

Jennifer Maesroe

I understand that I made a mistake. No judgement here; I've yelled at people for similar things.

To send Civil Protection to beat my ass into the ground, though? That's totalitarian. You escalated the situation when you could have dealt with me yourself.

I had so little left to lose at the time that I planned to make an appointment at the CMU and bring my revolver.

I'm not sure I could have done it, but luckily for you, you won't have to find out; I have a purpose now.

Alex Weaver - "Pops"

Where to even start with you, Mr. Weaver?

You were my life raft in a dangerous ocean of withheld permissions and incessant demands. You grew to become much more to me, as you seem to do with every new employee of the CWU; the ones who matter, at the very least.

It's hard for me to tell if I view you as family, given that I have no personal metric by which to judge you: my own flesh and blood treated me much as the Universal Union does.

If old films and older books are anything to work from, though, you're the
best father I ever could have asked for.

As close as we are, you still have secrets. I should hope to learn them one day.

Pathfinder

Every time I think I have a read on you, I find out I'm wrong.

I met you when you pointed a gun at a man after I told you he was robbing the dead.

Then, you gleefully described how fun it was to blow up a building, right after Red described all those who died that day because of it.

Then, you tried to save a life, and consoled me when I was at my lowest... But you stole my gun... And then gave it back.

I'm not sure I'll ever be able to fully trust someone so erratic, but I find it hard not to find you charming.

===
You pointed a gun at my head. Don't talk to me unless it's business for a while. I don't want to see you.
===
You are easily the most insane person I know, and you're a frightful mess, but you're my frightful mess. Get well soon.

Randy Cole

You are like a brother to me; we squabble and bicker, but it's all in good fun - on my side, at least.

I can't trust you, though. You've said a great deal of loyalist and anti-loyalist sentences, and it's impossible for me to figure out where you stand.

Yet you seem to want to be close to me and Pops... Perhaps I should probe further.

Elias Siemens

You are kind to the Vortigaunts; that's usually indicative of a great deal of compassion.

You've been nothing but kind to me, as well, but I know if I were to show you my true self, you'd turn me in immediately.

We must remain never truly acquainted. A shame, as I'd like to know you better.

Nat

You told me your name, you showed me the work shift terminal, you told me it gets easier, and then you vanished.

That day I was wondering if I even belonged in a place like the CWU. You made me feel like I did.

I know where you went, and I wish I could find you now, to thank you.

I hope you know I told the others - please visit the CWU sometimes, even if you can't say anything.

===
Don't go to the CWU, buddy; I'm not there anymore! I'm still giving out free Pops sandwiches to any officer who asks what the Natalia Special is, on the off-chance it's you.

Borislava

My very first night in the city you fed me, clothed me, gave me supplies, and told me it would be alright.

Eventually you gave me a gun, and told me a frequency. Said you'd let me know when it was time.

I felt indebted, and I so devoid of hope that the idea of shooting an officer made me want to carry on.

They found you, and your friends. They rounded you up.

I thought I recognized you in the pile of bodies. I wish I had time to bury you.

Whenever I carry the gun you gave me, I think of you. I'm sorry I wasn't there.

Samuel Lacrose

I've not spent enough time with you, but you've been nothing but pleasant to me. You are friendly and amicable, and nothing like I expected managerial staff to be like.

I've not had enough time to figure out where you stand politically, but y'know what they say about talking politics at work.

Raymond Saint Albert

You are a loveable goof! I've enjoyed every moment I've spent with you.

You seemed a little scary at first, but then you cooked for me, and ran a game of DnD for all the managerial staff and myself.

It was a great night and I hope to do it again, friend.

Laurentia Berrycloth

You know my name, but you have trouble saying it. I recognize it, but I pray others don't.

I should really speak to you about that.

Regardless, I hope in time you learn to overcome your affliction. You're always welcome in the clinic - I've been racking my brain, trying to remember what little I ever did about speech therapy.
====
I can't believe you're gone... I wish I was there, I could have done something.

It wasn't It'Er's fault, but it wasn't yours either...

God this is a dark, dark world.

Michael Hoxworth

You seem to bring escorts with you to the slums with the sole reason of joining in when they beat civilians.

You went out of your way to inflict as much harm on that civilian as possible, and you waited until he was unconscious and on the ground - like a coward.

You also seem to take pleasure in making as many people around you feel as much like shit as possible.

You are a pathetic man, and I can't wait for you to get what's coming to you.
=====
Eh, you're not even worth it to be honest. Maybe it'll happen, maybe not, but I don't really care.

=====
Huh, I guess someone thought you were worth it. Maybe I would have too, if I was out there with no Civil Protection watching.

I don't know what happened to you, but I hope you were kicked when you were down. A taste of your own medicine.

Luna Ricci

I met you before I had any cover to be blown, so we both know far too much about each other.

Despite this, a friend of Red's is a friend of mine.

You are polite, exceptionally generous, and you have some very deft hands: you seem like a better engineer than anyone in the CWU.

That One Cop Who Knows Me From Work

You know my name, my face, and my CID, but I don't know shit about you.

Yet, you still talk to me like we're friends; we aren't.

Stay the fuck away from my clinic.
================
Why did you wander into my store and ask me to make sandwiches to deliver to Indigent? You are either insane or obvious bait.

Director Zoey Grodno

I can't get a read on you.

You're the only Director in the city - other than Maesroe - who treats people even slightly well. I genuinely enjoy speaking with you, and you often remind me of myself.

That said, you seem to be wholly supportive of the Combine's oppressive order.

It didn't help you much, though, did it? Everyone and everything you've ever cared about has slowly been ripped from you, and despite your position of power, you were unable to stop it.

I can't help but view you as a cautionary tale about the dangers of complacency. Maybe, you're even enough like me to see reason...

It'Er/Rome

You were there for my CWU interview. I thought you'd be a problem for me. I'm embarrassed to admit, I remember feeling the same about the other Weaver, though, so no hard feelings.

Since then, you've become one of my closest allies. I adore hearing your stories of the past and explanations of the murals.

The first day you stepped foot in my clinic with Basar, it all clicked into place. I'm extremely happy to have someone around who understands the intricacies of what I'm doing.

If you ever want to share notes, you know where to find me.

Hey, ammo is expensive, and you still kept half your share.

Besides, you were only stuck up because you failed to /me handing it over, or anything. IC we'd have seen, OOC, it's dark in the underground.

Sticking someone up for antlion meat is funny, though
