Since server is still on break and suggestions for change are everywhere these days, I'll post this draft version of my endless ramblings about WN's bad rebel factions in #Lore-Discussion. If anyone has anything to add to the discussion, be my guest.

Here’s my attempt at removing most cliché/lazy elements and replacing them with more subtle writing and allowing it to become something else than the group of communist larpers than it is right now in every event where the faction is involved.
First two points are probably already being dealt with rn, but I hope the later two points are also being considered since they're issues you can see in the rest of the factions as well.

(Xenforo is acting completely retarded with the formatting, so the only way to make a readable thread was by literally screenshotting the google doc, fuck xenforo)

tl;dr, what the SRF should be:

  1. A grounded faction comprising several groups of different ideologies and backgrounds that joined their forces after the failure of the Eastern Uprising
  2. Their alliance allows them to pose a viable threat to the Combine presence in the region; but down the line, a serious defeat might lead to internal fighting as the different leaders of the Soviet clash ideologically during times of crisis (tease development instead of having a static faction)
  3. The SRF is a regional threat, able to withstand any current attempt of the Combine to sweep them from the area but unable to pull out a ‘Gordon Freeman’ move and completely wipe out Overwatch forces in the area and liberate half of Russia just like that.
  4. They are just veteran rebels fighters who know the local geography and deny the Combine their advantages by playing to their strengths and avoiding an open battle they have no chance of winning

It's 2019 lore that's the oldest of the old and it's already in rework since the previous week. I'd rather post that here to clarify something.

Soviet/communist identity
I think for the SRF The whole "Soviet" Aspect is for them what the whole "Minuteman / patriot" Thing is for Americans atleast in my opinion that's what it should be. For a lot of older Russians even some Ukrainians and Belarusians there is a nostalgia for the USSR not much among the current generation but think the boomers they're the driving force behind the people in our timeline who genuinely want to revive the USSR IRL. In real life undoubtedly not every soviet soldier posted was a die hard communist inside it was something they likely did for survival.

SRF in City 3
You can argue the SRF Have pretty much already won in Moscow at this point following the dome being breached and the 2 month long urban combat followed by the CCA Being assassinated and mass CP/MAA Casualties and defections that undoubtedly happened.

This all being said I've advocated for this and I think it would be a better idea for them to move to the country-side much like their Maoist brethren in east/southeast Asia (ESIC) And fight a drawn out guerilla war that way with the goal being linking up with other eastern cells and funding like-minded groups in western European cities much the way the KGB Would have.

Composition of the SRF

At it's inception the SRF were founded by those same boomer officers of the soviet old guard who wanted a piece of pie for themselves and thus alot of the older stock or more experienced guys are veterans one way or another though these day's we've seen the SRF Conscript citizens (Long Haul) (Stalingrad) It's very likely that a lot of resources were expended in trying to destroy or liberate Moscow but that being said the Russian wilderness is vast incredibly vast no doubt there are depots and small bunkers out there that even the Russian government weren't aware of atleast officially Personally I'd like to see the SRF we saw in For the Motherland, And Operation Kraken begin an exodus from C3 Seeing as the 4th army (Not sure what cengis is calling them) Was successful in taking stalingrad.
