In the way back when, I was a member of Short Stories and a Mentor of which I was in the crowd of over 70+ people witnessing something new for Willard Networks since I first joined; the map update. When I was overviewing the changes that would be made when the map was changed, I saw that the district was going to be ran by a “District Attorney”. Now, we all know by now that Atle paid a homeless European man $3 and a half-eaten piece of moldy bread to write up an announcement for his gmod server and a wording error occurred, apparently it was supposed to say District Administrator, which sorta shattered my expectations for proper loyalist RP, especially since I became a T4 around this time.
If you haven’t read the title by now and you’re just diving in blind, you might wanna know what kind of expectation I had with this in mind? Well, it should be pretty easy from the get-go. Allow me to explain:
The Teasing
And Half-Assed Attempts
Throughout my time as a Creative Team member, I utilized my powers to create a cohesive storyline about my loyalist character and portrayed him as the modern-day Van Gogh to make him stand out from the rest. Inevitably, his behavior lead to him being arrested by Civil Protection by the command of Ron Goodfella and would be character banned for a week, sent to the re-processing facility in the Outlands. As my CP character, I was kinda curious on what happened to my character so I checked his datalogs and his punishment was: “TO BE ARBITRATED”. This basically meant my character had to go through the process of a court system and legal ruling, but it would just be skipped and I was sent to jail through the click of a button.
What I’m saying is, I’m not mad that a loyalist character I made went to jail because he did things for that to happen intentionally. I’m more or less frustrated that a legal ruling had completely went out the window. An actual scenario of court RP that could’ve lasted for a max of 30 minutes would’ve been a good temporary send-off for the character as he’s outcasted by the elites he once looked up to, not “He’s arbitrated! BOLO him and throw him into the slammer!” This directly contributes to the problem of losing a character, even if it’s temporary. You’re barely ever given a chance to give off a proper goodbye to a character, and the only attempt I see at fixing this is a “final /me before death”.
The Fix
I’ve seen a lot of court RP throughout my time in several rp communities in and out of Garry’s Mod. Most of them are boring, especially on stuff like mafiarp servers as you’re just taking the same cases over and over again and there’s nothing really interesting going on there. For Willard, it wouldn’t really be different and it would be boring for there to be a court case every couple of hours, especially with how many crimes are committed by the civilian populace on a daily basis. My fix? Well, it’s simple.
- Court RP should primarily happen to a civilian if they have criminal charges on their name with no proper confirmation on whether or not they committed these crimes, allowing Civil Protection and the City Council to discuss evidence with each other and rule out whether they are guilty or not. This prevents bias of any form from Civil Protection as they are not the main deciders of the future of a character, they provide the evidence and their testimonies.
- Charges on a prominent character, for example a well-known loyalist of the Combine, should be given a court case of their own to judge their loyalty and what they have done to contribute as a loyalist. This wouldn’t overrule the charges on their name depending on what they are and their severity.
- Loyalists on the server are currently struggling, and that is because they barely have anything to do. As a civilian, the very LEAST you could do is focus on grinding into a status of wealth and loyalty. And then when you have that status of Loyalism and a super cool armband, what else is there to do? Well, you can partake in a job like being an analyst for the CLC or maybe even a scientist at the CPRD. What if you can’t join or what if you don’t want to and you want to do something else? This can be something to give Loyalists something to do and provide a more wider degree of positions they can take as a loyalist. When I made my character, I simply made him a semi-famous painter and it worked really well and I saw the vision of my character and how his story was going to workout. I get we ICly live in a world where you’re a statistic and you have to be generic, but being generic OOCly and having a shitty character is not interesting at all.
- I already mentioned this before, though it should get its own section alone for how prevalent the issue may potentially become. Civil Protection are your average police officers with the addition of more oppression and violence against people who are under them in the social class. They should not be allowed to dictate jail/prison sentences or anything in that manner as some of them are biased, whether it be personally or for the ideals of the faction, and could pave way for a dark path of constant OOC arguments and a lot of people whining. A proper court system for something like this can prevent complaints, allow fair justification for a character to be going to prison, etc. You wouldn’t let a police officer IRL dictate whether your guilty or not just because they have the evidence and they can decide it themselves.
I can keep listing the upsides for hours on end, but I don’t want this to be too long. I just wanna see something like this implemented in the future, whether now or in V3. I just want loyalists to have something more to do other than be a pencil pusher and a desk jockey for their entire lives until their inevitable deaths.
