Inside an empty room laid an empty table with a single light to illuminate the darkness. On said table is a book, worn out and old - Yet obviously used extensively.

Opening the book reveals one word and countless pages to run through.

"The Story of Wei"

[ 开始 - THE BEGINNING]

1684308593465.png

Kenji Wei was born in June 12, 1995 in Yunman City. Born to a Single with no Father and Living in Near-Poverty, He had a difficult upbringing in the hostile and miserable environment he found himself in.

During his childhood, his mother both loved yet hated him for reasons that he could not comprehend at the time. All he knew was that it always originated from his father, whom he never met, as well as her alcoholic vices to cope with their situation. His mother's behavior of bipolarity of hugging him with affection to suddenly scorning his very existence in a heartbeat was something that he could never forget.

In Poverty, he had to survive with the barest of necessities available to him. While he barely had any knack for cooking, his grasp of crafty ingenuity of broken and damaged items allowed him a chance of success in the harsh conditions of the slums he called 'home', by fixing and making things out of nothing but trash and scrap.

Using his newfound knowledge and ingenuity, he managed to earn tiny bits of profit acting as a sort of 'repair' boy within his neighborhood - Unfortunately, his ignorance over the value of money made way for people to cheat out of his services or pay the minimal amount of money to the point of scamming him. Living in a country that's barely holding itself together against the Xen Storms made his skills valuable.

Of course, this also got him involved in the ‘shadier’ types of business such as repairing electronics easily for a quick buck. Little did he know that said electronics were sold as cheap, scam products.

This was the daily activities of the young Kenji Wei before the era of Xen Storms ended and came in the Seven Hour War. To think that his life could get any worse, It just did and the experiences he faced during that time was one he could never truly forget...

Like any sane child would, he immediately ran for the only form of 'safety' and 'comfort' in this world - His home and his mother.

Running as fast as he could, he ignored the fear in his heart and the destruction happening around him - Focusing only getting away from chaos erupting from the invasion. Unfortunately, he only made it just in time to see his own mother; Running towards him with fear in her eyes. Scooping him up in her arms as they ran to who-knows where.

Relief sprouted before despair replaced it immediately as he heard a whirl-like sound before something impacted the both of them, bringing them down onto the ground.

Within his mother's embrace, she held him still yet he felt her chest unmoving and the warmth from her body slowly going away. Fear took root in his heart, his mind screaming at him to not look up.

However, his morbid curiosity won and he raised his head to look upon the face of his mother. Staring down at him with her left eye half-lidded, wide-eyed yet lifeless till the horrific appearance of her right face, melting away as remnants of plasma made it slid down.

Botches of burning blood and flesh stained his cheek, his terror-stricken eyes and face stared up at his lifeless mother before darkness took his sight.

[ 存活 - SURVIVE ]

Vendetta_fountain_with_killed_soldiers_WaW.jpg

Smell was the first sense that he felt. Such a horrid, disgusting stench that made him retch at it. It smelt like… something was rotting.

Touch was the next sense; The heavy pressure upon his body, weight pressing down on him without remorse to the point that he struggled to breath. His arms and legs were bogged down and he couldn’t move, at first.

Sight was the last sense he consciously regained, one that he wished that he never regained to not bear witness to the sight that still haunts him to this day.

Darkness covered the entirety of his vision; he could not see anything but pitch black in front of him. This scared him, of course – Most children naturally feared the dark, their imagination going wild at what contains within.

He was no exception to this. And so, he struggled to move; The pressure from before still making him feel as he was pushing through something like hard mud. The sounds of squishing can be heard as he does so.

What is that? It sounds horrible yet familiar to him. Something wet stains his hands as he keeps trying to get up from whatever he found himself in. He looks down at his hands, curious on what’s on it

Only for his eyes to adjust to the dark at that time to see blood.

His heart jumped at the sight of this. Startled, he looks up to see vacant eyes staring down at him – Unblinking. Unflinching. The man’s face remained in a state of agonizing pain, his jaw-line is nothing but burnt flesh.

Kenji turns to the side, only to meet with another face- A woman, dead as her eyes were nowhere to be found; Only leaving the hollow sockets that contained them.

He turns his head only to see more and more dead faces around him, and his instincts screamed at him to get out – Fear fueling his desire to escape whatever hellish nightmare he found himself in.

And so, he crawled up – His hands touching the very faces of the dead all around him, pushing them away yet it feels like they are growing ever closer to him, their lifeless bodies touching his own.

It felt suffocating, heavy, and trapped. No matter how much he struggled, he could not find an end to the endless numbers of bodies in his wake.

This must be the end for him, despair filling his heart as the feeling of giving up came to mind.

Fortunately, a glimmer of hope shined through the deceased – A light shining between the cracks of the dead. This rejuvenated his actions, desperation and hope soaring in his heart.

Crawling up as blood and organs stain his entire being, he was so close to the light…! Almost there…!

Up above, is a pit filled with the recent deceased – Thrown to be intended into a mass grave. Lives lost to the war, uncaring of who they were in life and now only to be forgotten to the world.

Amidst the carnage and masses, one of the bodies moved for a brief moment then again – Only for a hand to emerge from the depths of the pile, frantically grabbing anything in the vicinity.

Gripping onto something stable, Kenji Wei managed to pull himself out of the nightmarish depths he found himself in. With a sharp intake of breath, he coughs it up as he manages to inhale the decay and rot around him.

Pulling himself out further, he crawls on over to the edge of the pit and uses his fingers to grip onto the soft soil – The soil and earth breaking his nails, making them bleed in his attempt to escape from the pit.

But Kenji did not feel nor care about that – He only wanted to get away from it all. Eventually, he reached the top and looked around him with shaky breath.

And like the hellhole he crawled out from – Pits of similar mass graves scattered all around the land. It all made him sick and fearful of what caused this. He was right outside of the City, which look like ruins now.

Looking down, his horrifying memory of his mother dying is still etched into his mind – But like any child at his age, he feared the worst for her but… He wanted to find her, at least bury her close to home.

Home…

Unfortunately, he couldn’t ponder any longer as loud thuds that shook the earth was what he heard – And it seems like it’s approaching ever closer for each thud.

Fear of the Unknown quickly overrides his previous plans – With his inner desire to survive screaming at him to leave the area soon.

Which he did, stumbling across the pits and mass graves then into the ruins of Yunman City – The child skulking into the darkness as the mechanical noise of a nearby Strider was heard all around.

Kenji’s life is now up to fate.

The dark smog hangs over the bleak slums of City Twelve, the day starting off as citizens wake up to another depressing day of working in the local factories and business to make end’s meet.

Much of the population live in the low-tier slums that take up more than half of the city, leaving a good portion to focus more on industrial production and a tiny portion reserved for the ‘loyalists’ and the ‘privileged’ subjects of the human species – Their loyalty and conformity to rat out their fellow man being rewarded by the Combine.

As the shambles of citizens walk the streets – The oppressive atmosphere was only reinforced with the local Civil Protection patrolling and keeping the peace. They keep their heads down, unwilling to make eye contact with the Civil Protection lest they would be taken in for questioning and left bruised.

In the midst of all this, a few citizens appear to be carrying suitcases carrying their luggage – Heading towards the nearby train station as per instructed. One of these citizens seems to be Kenji Wei, all grown up and living within the Combine’s constructed society like so many.

During his walk to the station, something caught his eye and he discreetly looked to the side to see what piqued his interest.

It was another citizen, a short man who appears to be nearing his fifties – Clued by the gray hair and long beard on his face. Wearing a green variant of the citizen jumpsuit, unlike his blue-colored one, he casually walks up to Kenji and continues his strides alongside him.

“So… Finally leaving us, huh?” The man spoke with a raspy voice, his beady eyes looking straight ahead.

“Hm… Not like I have a choice” Kenji responded in kind, with something akin of respect in his voice.

“There is always a choice, my pupil.” His wisdom was offered once again. One that was rejected.

“Not this time, Master.” Letting out a sigh, Kenji shook his head as the sight of the Inspection Desk grew ever closer – The mandatory place you must pass through before boarding a train.

“I probably won’t be able to see you all again…” His fears and anxiety were spilled easily, his guard down as he spoke to the elder.

“Fate is something you must handle and control by your own hands – Lest others will control it for you.” The two stops in their track in the middle of the street, still far away from the desk.

The elder places his hand upon his head, the calm feeling and reassuring flows through his body – Reducing both his fear and anxiety.

“Kenji, my pupil – Remember to be strong in both body and spirit; So long as you have both, our paths will cross again in due time.”

Closing his eyes, he nods with a deep breath before looking at the elder and bowing his head “Thank you for everything, Master.”

“I’ve only done what I can, Kenji. I have given you the means – Now, it is up to you to use those for the path that lies ahead.”
‘Master’ beckoned his ‘Pupil’ to stand straight as he took a step back.

Before he gestures the man to walk forward, Kenji could not nod with a small sad smile as he approaches the desk.

The ‘Master’ is left all by his lonesome on the street, his beady eyes staring at his ‘pupil’ as he allows himself to be searched before entering beyond the doors of the train station building, never to be seen again in this city.

Under his breath, he spoke once more.

“We shall meet again, my dear pupil – In this life… or the next.”

The One Whom I Once Called 'Brother'
@Belgg

Jun... We first met back in District Nine, within that Slum. It was like any other day when we stumbled upon each other - We didn't hit it off, at first, but eventually I grew to trust him; Even called him 'Brother from the homeland' cause we both hailed from China - Suppose he took it seriously too, with how he kept referring to me as 'Brother' from that day forth.

I've taught him all I knew - From how to survive to how to eventually thrive. At some point, we grew to trust each other no matter what... Eventually, that trust was strained. When he created his 'Jun's Army', something about him changed - Gone was the man whom I could trust and in his place was one I could call 'Arrogant', grasping tightly for order within the slums with an Iron Fist.

His cause was just like any other but the way he did it unsettled me. His words, his actions, and eventually - His conduct was like one that I could call a 'Warlord'. His trust in me remained strong and absolute, he saw me as his brother who would help beside him in this 'Army' of his. I rejected it, time and time again - Withholding my concerns like a fearful coward. Fearful of what, I asked myself - Fearful of what he would do to me if I challenged him, or Fearful of what our relationship would become once I took a stand.

I did not know. I did not wish to know. So I stayed silent. My interference wasn't needed as his 'Army' and himself mysteriously vanished, remained dormant for weeks - Even when District Nine was put to the torch, His army was silent during all of it.

At first, I thought Jun fled with his army from the District - To seek territory elsewhere. But then I heard of what happened at a secret lab site, told by one of his own men. You and others were cut down during your escape after triggering some sort of alarm. Once I heard of that, I grieved. Blamed myself from not taking a stand. To stop you from trekking into it but it was too late now. He was gone...

Or so I thought.

We were then transferred to a new district, one that was more closer to the industrial heart of City Twenty-Four - District 43. It felt like months passed before I suddenly heard of a 'Jun' within the Slum's rumor grapevine. I was esthetic to see him once again, my heart relieved that he was not dead. It was a joyful memory, one I that I cherished... Before you begun your work once again, to reform the 'Army' as you would call it. Just from a week alone, you've already claimed most of the slums and it's inhabitants as yours - Your arrogance shining through once more.

Instead of last time however, I took a stand - This shall not go on, letting you rule over the slums like a Warlord was something I intend to not repeat again. I confronted you, took a stand, and displayed my concerns. You would not listen. Instead, you were offended that I questioned you and called me the 'betrayer' for betraying your trust for listening to those whom have seen what you've did.

I would not be cowed by fear nor intimidated to be docile - To bow my head and listen to your orders without question?! We called each other brothers yet you would not only listen to me but go against me as well.

The end of that argument made me realize that my fears have come true - Our trust and bond was forever broken. Neither of us would back down in what we thought was right.

Days, even a week, passed after that. You would not speak to me nor did I. I resented you and you probably did too... Perhaps I was still naïve to change your mind but it was too late once more. Tragedy struck as you and your army decided to storm 'Triumph' but for what? I did not know, perhaps I will never know.

That was the last I've seen or heard of you. It has been months since then and I doubt you survived that engagement. Some said that you died in the sewers in an attempt to the Outlands, others say that you surrendered and were taken to the Nexus, never to be seen again.

Regardless, I held no hope that you would come back. My heart still resented you yet I still remember what we once had... Perhaps one day, we'll met again and settle this once and for all. For now, I will do what I can in this world you left.

Peace be upon you, my brother. Rest eternally.

The Strange Elder

@toby

Lawson Smith, the first westerner I have seen and I suppose the first 'friend' I made within this city. Our meeting was one out of both coincidence and strangeness. We first met within the underground sewers of the district before district nine - He rushed up to me and asked me if I could help in acquiring certain items. He was with a friend as well, a black man who's face and name I could not remember.

Of course, my master taught me well that I shouldn't allow my services to be bought for free - And at such, a price must be made. Chips for his desired 'items of dangerous edge'. It was a relationship born out of... neutral business, one would say.

We didn't speak much to one another, and for each one we did - It always felt like he trusted me more than he should. I could not remember anything... meaningful between us - Still, he was a good acquaintance. When I heard of his death down below the sewers of District Nine, I could only light a candle in sorrow as I prayed to the spirts to bring this strange elder to eternal peace.

The Westerner Who Speak The Nipon's Tongue
@Dr. Ternith Plague

The day I was hired into the Civil Worker's Union - I was passed off to be a journeyman and was taught the 'ropes' in how things operate within the work environment. You know, the one that has to deal with the rookie? That duty of teaching me was pushed onto Miss Ovaiss, a long-time employee within the Worker Union, no doubt. She was brief and onto the point of the essentials, no nonsense and the like.

We never really spoke much outside of work - Except the time I learned that she spoke the tongue of the Nipon's homeland when I bought audiobooks from the DOB store - A surprise, in all honesty. Other than that, we are only mere co-workers at best. Perhaps I'll invite her for a drink or two, probably should get sake if possible...

The Authoritarian Leader
@Anthrax_PL

Arthur Eastgate is a man who gets shit done. My first impression of him was one I could call a strict 'stick-up-his-ass' manager every single moment I see him within the workplace. His voice would be booming loudly, both in person and in radio, to anyone in the vicinity. Any who spoke to him would probably hear more crass language and attitude that it even makes some of the rebels and officers I know of tame in comparison. He even temporarily fired me for accidentally dismantling a smelter once, thinking that it was a workshift left un-cleaned by one of my co-workers. That man was merciless in his punishment before he ordered me to rebuild it or face removal from the Civil Worker group altogether.

Makes me wonder if this guy was part Civil Protection once with how brutal his words can be. Still, I can't help but begrudgingly respect the man - After all, being a leader; One must be able to control his subjects, lest they disobey and be slack with disobedience... I can definitely relate to that feeling...

Still an asshole though.

The Heavy Weapon's Guy
@dude

Aeric, the man with the biggest gun yet still bitch on and back out if we're doing operations within the city. I've known the man since back in District 43 alongside 'Bluu', mainly doing quests and the odd-job for the right chips. In a way, you could call him a rebel... Just tends to ask about money before doing any significant thing that involves risking his life. Guess you could call him smart, asking for payment before fighting the Combine within the city - Me? I personally think of him as a craven; Wanting to not risk his life meaninglessly in every firefight

Still, he's been with me before the collapse of the last district - I could definitely trust him to watch my back, though at times I doubt myself on that... But gain his willingness to fight, Aeric will shred the opposition with no mercy; A bag of chips and ammo will do just that.
