*Indistinctive radio chatter from pilots*
"Oscar-Mike 311, this is Spartan 2-1. Over."
"Oscar-Mike 311 reading, go for Spartan 2-1."
"Spartan 2-1, we are leaving the Black Mesa Research Facility. Two squadrons of HECU evacuated; 7 casualties onboard. Requesting preparation of ground medical team for wounded. We are 20 mikes out, over."
"Oscar-Mike 311 acknowledges. Standby for confirmation Spartan 2-1...."
*Hearing the radio chatter, a HECU Marine approaches the pilots, frustrated and angry*
Commander Thorn: "Negative! You will not be taking us back to base. Unknown operatives from the US government attacked us. They could be waiting for us to land there and then kill us all... like they did to so many of us already."
Pilot: "What the hell are you talking about?! There is no way that happened, and we have wounded onboard. Sorry, sir, but I'll be taking our wounded back to base along with the rest of your crew."
*Angry with the pilot, the commander pulls out his Berreta M92 and points it to the head of the pilot*
Commander Thorn: "I will blow your fuckin' head off right now, god damn it! You're going to fly us far away from here. Take us to the mountains near Texas so my men and I can escape. After that, I don't give a shit what you do.
Pilot: "Woah, woah! Just - calm down, commander.... I'll do as you ask, but I just want you to know that what your doing is considered going AWOL. You'll be court-martialed or even worse...."
Commander Thorn: "Quit your yapping, pilot. I understand the risks, but it's better than certain death going home. Now get this bird turned around."
*Radio chatter continues before it is quickly shut off*
"Oscar-Mike 311 to Spartan 2-1, you're green to land, caution advi-"

Three years later, in Fort Worth, Texas. The year is 2005...
Following the Black Mesa Incident, the lonesome survivors of the HECU detachment make their way from the wilderness into the remains of what was once Fort Worth, Texas. A year after the Seven-Hour War and the total collapse of the government, the city has been essentially decimated. It is completely void of human life, leaving only the hazards of the wasteland and the treacherous xenian life amongst the ruins.
During the portal storms, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area was nearly entirely evacuated, besides some remnants of the military and unwilling Americans who refused to abandon their homes and leave the city. The portal storms in this area were enough to leave much of the metropolitan area in ruins and infested with xenian life. Whatever local government was here in the city collapsed and dissolved long before the Seven-Hour War, leaving only the military base in Fort Worth still active for the region. During the Seven-Hour War, the military base, including the airfield, was nearly destroyed and abandoned. A massive ground battle took place just west of the base which has now been marked as a toxic wasteland that is uninhabitable and requires Hazmat-level equipment to venture inside of its forgotten past.
Seeing the opportunity from the now-empty land, the HECU detachment sets out on a mission to re-establish society and order in the world. Occupying the former Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Forth Worth, they establish a quarantine zone around their camp dubbing it 'Nora.' Over the course of several years, they managed to erect walls and get power working again in the base through the use of backup generators and military equipment that had been left behind during the war. The settlement would be fittingly named 'Devil's Den' which is reminiscent of how US Marines are often referred to as 'devil dogs'.
Commander Thorn designates the people and settlement under the new title of 'The Marshals' and continues to lead them.

The Marshals
The Marshals are a rebel antagonist faction located in Fort Worth, Texas. Under the peering eye of Commander Thorn and former HECU soldiers, they oversee all operations of the settlement, and it is essentially run as a military dictatorship. The Marshals conscript settlers into their ranks and morph them into professional soldiers who also operate as local law enforcement within the settlement walls. They are heavily armed and equipped to deal with most situations, though their equipment is old. It is important to note that only hand-picked settlers are chosen to serve. Once they are chosen, they are either forced to serve or exiled into the wasteland.
Marshal soldiers are often seen wearing former military and police uniforms and gear which was in abundance after the collapse and abandonment of Fort Worth. Their most notable feature is that all of them seem to wear riot helmets with a face shield attached to their helmets. Soldiers' daily duties consist of "walking the wall", gate duty, and patrolling Quarantine Zone 'Nora' which is labeled all around the perimeter of the settlement. Utilizing recommissioned humvees, they have access to several military vehicles which they also use to patrol the QZ and maintain order within Devil's Den. Due to their extremely dangerous job and assigned duties, the average life expectancy of a soldier serving within the Marshals is only around 3 years.

Devil's Den
Devil's Den is s sprawling settlement located in Fort Worth, Texas. Traders frequently flock to the settlement to conduct business with local soldiers, refugees, and citizens within its walls. Founded by former HECU Marines shortly after the Seven-Hour War, the settlement has very strict laws, however; even though it is ruled with an iron fist, peace mostly exists within this place due to its inherently strict nature. The Marshals often employ citizens and refugees and pay them to conduct jobs around the perimeter of the settlement, including their most recent project which is the rebuilding of a factory nearby on the airbase. Marshals plan to use this factory upon completion to manufacture basic goods, clothing, and equipment again.
Using a modified version of the US Military Court System, punishments are often severe and unforgiving, and they are carried out in public very similar to the Combine. Members of the former HECU detachment all sit within leadership positions of the settlement, training new recruits in the arts of combat and forming an effective and professional fighting force in what is considered the last settlement in all of Texas. Other members serve as judges and executioners, enforcing laws and carrying out their punishments at a whims notice under the authority of Commander Thorn, the man in charge of 'Devil's Den' and its people.
Being so far into the frontier, Devil's Den has thrived mostly in peace over the years it has been around. Being so far away from any form of Combine contact and standing as the only settlement in Texas, many refugees flock to its walls and seek protection from the treacherous wastes. Surrounded by 'Quarantine Zone Nora' soldiers are often seen patroling the perimeter and engaging hostile Xenian lifeforms near the settlement which is likely why it has managed to survive for so long. With plans on expansion due to its rapidly-growing population, Devil's Den continues its journey as a beacon in the wastes....
