CSGO props and their problems

Willard Networks uses CSGO props on the server. Understandably so, they're modern counterparts of the props from Counter Strike Source and HL2, with updated textures and poly counts. They're overall prettier and fit more in certain spaces than props from CSS/HL2, such as CCA offices where you'd expect to see higher-quality furniture, and there's a bigger variety of props to choose from, elevating the server's quality and atmosphere.

Despite all the pros, CSGO is essentially defunct with the existence of CS2 (its successor), making using CSGO props a hassle.
To see CSGO props on the server, you can either install CS2 with the CSGO legacy branch, meaning you'd be installing basically two entire games, one being almost entirely obsolete. The issue is further exacerbated if you don't intend to play CS2 at all, because you'd be wasting disk space just to be able to see props on a hl2rp server.

However, you could install just the CSGO props by manipulating the console in order to install just the data from CSGO's steam ID. In my opinion, this is a bit of a hassle and just very silly. I don't think this is a good long-term solution because who knows what could happen; Valve could wipe CSGO off of Steam (very unlikely tbh) or the methods used could just stop working.

Alternatively, you could just install a CSGO prop pack off of the Steam workshop, but with a caveat that you'd still not be able to see all the props that could be potentially used. The one promoted by Staff is about 2-3GB in size and somewhat alleviates the issue, you might still see a few errors but a certain amount of props are visible.

Except it has yet another caveat, that being that it doesn't include viewmodels from CSGO, at least not all of them. This means that you can't see magazines when they're dropped, because they'd be large flashing errors or completely invisible if you use an error hider.
This, in my opinion, is a big issue. It is basically incapacitating if you want to pursue combat. In order to pick the mags up, you'd either have to be very lucky or have someone put it in your inventory using /charsearch or using containers.

Another thing to note is that these addons have a tendency of being taken down, which just adds more logs to the fire, so to speak. Anyway, here are two pics of the most egregious instances.

So far, the only solution to seeing all the props and entities without issue is installing the legacy branch of CSGO on CS2. Ultimately, if you don't want or cannot afford to waste disk space on an entire game and a half you don't want to play, you're fucked.

I hope whoever is in charge of this will at least consider my post because the server's experience is greatly dampened by the above mentioned issues, and I really don't want to remove half of my measly disk space (250gb) to be able to play on a hl2rp server in a satisfactory manner. Thanks!!! /)

I'd like to suggest an addon that could potentially resolve the whole issue while also keeping CSGO props on the server for those who want them.
This addon functions as an error hider, but it has a cool function of rendering the hitboxes of the errors after hiding them, making them visible to those who don't have the necessary content. While not a pretty solution, this would allow people without CSGO content to see error prop's outlines, which would greatly alleviate the magazine issue in the original post (because you'd be able to actually see them) and mildly help with the rest of the problem.

I wish they wouldn’t use CSGO props as actual platforms and kept them restricted to decorations, though ideally I’d just get rid of them altogether at this point. I feel like it’s inevitable that someone either not being able to see them or seeing through them due to an error hider is gonna cause someone to lose a character.

I also want to add that these props are taxing when it comes down to performance. Do we seriously need this many CSGO props as in the pictures? Do we need CSGO props if we can replace them with their CSS counterparts? Especially considering that they're a better alternative when it comes down to overall performance and player set up. Downloading CS2 (which is over 60GB worth of content) isn't worth downloading, only to be switching later to legacy CSGO (which is 30GB large) is silly when you think about it.

A player has to waste valuable time and internet speed for what is essentialy nothing but a handful of props that are placed behind a couple of locked doors that only a handful of people will have access to. And I'm going to repeat myself here like a broken record, but this is affecting the performance of the server. Frames are already dropping when you have more than 40-50 players on the server and getting rid of these props will partially alleviate this.

what do you mean this is an unnecessary amount of props for an office 4 people access regularly?

Another thing I forgot to mention: if you don't have CSGO props and use an error hider, you attempt to interact with any of the hidden props, you cannot. For example, trying to sit down is impossible because cannot interact with the chair. Not sure if this affects containers.

I didn't have any issue just adding CS2 (csgo legacy) and L4D2 to my mounts for GMod, what's the big ideaaaa!

The problem is that CS2/csgo legacy on its on is another 60gb that you have to download to not have a 'sub-optimal' experience on the server. It's a shame because the workshop content pack should just contain these props. Not sure why they're missing. It's only a few that are missing as well.

Edit: Alright so don't get me wrong, I absolutely love having CS2 props because they are modern and aesthetically pleasing. We have the same problem on the other HL2RP server, the main issue falls under them being way too large to be in the content pack to make it accessible to the average player. If only it could be condensed a little, but that itself has its own problem, because it's "repacking" content from another game. Usually VALVE aren't so anal about it, when it comes to old games such as L4D2 and such, I have hardly heard any issues. But because it's from their newer IPs, it'll be harder to achieve.

We used content pack from RP_Asheville, which it itself was packed with CSS content and that makes up the large bulk of the pack, which we don't need because most people already have CSS if they have been playing gmod for any decent amount of time. You should really also look into seeing if you can repack the Asheville content too, because that has a lot of nice 'pleasant and modern' props that aren't CSS. You might like to use those.

Right. So, CS:GO has been required more or less since we opened years back. I believe the main reason why folks are complaining is due to the added CS2 download requirement (thanks gabe). I get that this can be frustrating to some but- at the same time- the server relies on these assets. As you mentioned- not only because its a great, high quality asset pack to use for props, materials, etc- but also it is used in all of our weapon packs.

So, at the end of the day, this would require quite a bit of effort for us to resolve from a development perspective as new weapon packs would have to be created, and a number of assets would need to be ported into said packs (which currently require CS:GO).

At the same time- and not to sound dismissive here or anything- I see 250gb SSDs go for $30 all day. I know that is a lot of money to most folks. If you need help getting a second drive, I can see what I can do. But, I can't wholeheartedly recommend spending a week+ of dev time on trying to resolve this when we've got high priority tasks already in-development. Especially given that this hasn't been an issue for years until now.

Wasn’t going back to CSS floated around when CSGO stopped working initially? I feel the bigger issue is the propping and how excessive it can be with this issue in mind, rather than the weapons, thought it is undoubtedly an issue. I do feel that the change in circumstances should encourage atleast some kind of solution rather than just ignoring it entirely or just telling people to get better computers.

One note for the CS:GO props.
An issue with removing them and replacing them with other prop packs is that it would take numerous other add-ons to come close to the variety of props that we have access to thanks to CS:GO. We're talking city props, desert/slums props, nature props, weapons, electronics, detailing, etc.
There are simply too many good props that we use regularly that fit in from it.

It does blow that it is a massive game but we would likely be running into the exact same issues if we had to hunt for other add-ons to match the diversity that the game allows for. They may even end up being close in terms of the sheer amount of space being used as well.

If we could find a singular, smaller, add-on that allows us the same detail and variety then we would likely go with it.

Honestly I can live with a few errors, I just wish the sheer density of them being used was toned down. I get having some detail for immersion but 500 CS:GO paper bag props or whatever else is just unnecessary. And like I mentioned earlier, using them for things such as platforms and such is something can directly affects your ability to move around the map. Realistically, if we could have had a time to do this it would've been during the break, as it is now even if they do decide to actually swap the props for CSS or some other prop pack or combination of the two it'll presumably take forever.

I do kinda think that even a combination of prop packs would be more reasonable considering the sheer size of CSGO with it's current circumstances though
