Considering that things like torture and cannabalism RP appear to be allowed on the server if both players agree, I really don't see why people should be getting banned for their character saying a slur. Much less beyond the pale, and if the other player didn't have an OOC issue with it, I don't see where the harm is.

I just think censoring IC language is a bit against the spirit of creative writing, especially since this guy who was banned was playing an obviously serious character and not just saying slurs for the sake of it.

All i will say is... IC is IC. As long as it's not targetted and the players dont mind it... It should be fine, people should be allowed to say whatever they want ICLY as long as everyone can agree that it's fine OOCLY and don't feel bad about it. A ban is a bit too much, quit the yapping.

Okay, time to give my opinion about this deal.

It is actually funny seeing people getting offended by words that has no meaning to them behind the screen OOCly, anything that happens in roleplay happens ICly and it is not literal to the person playing the character, but towards the character itself.

This shouldn't be the case as realistic roleplaying does have situations like this, you cannot tell me that people are not calling each other slurs in real life jokingly, or basically just as in slurs. If the character that is insulting the other side does not have an OOC motive towards the other character as in specifically calling them any slurs because they are in the LGBTQ+ community irl should be fine. But yeah if they have an OOC motive towards them it should be bannable.

As some other members stated after someone calls a different character a slur, they should state that in /looc or in PMs that they are not comfortable with these words and the other side should stop. How would they know they will get offended OOCly because of something that happened ICly? This shouldn't deserve a ban unless they are specifically using slurs to target the player behind the screen.

This is a realistic serious roleplay server, and these stuff happens in real life, get along with it. You are not going to stop it in real life, but you can stop it here by simply saying you are uncomfortable, people shouldn't get banned instantly just because they called another character a slur.

If the extent of your skills as a "creative writer" includes you having to say offensive slurs then you should consider how "creative" your writing truly is.

It’s called having antagonistic traits. As long as it’s maintained in-character, then what’s the issue?

I think Rad’s post about two staff members ‘blowing off steam’ by combing logs to hand out bans for things that were never reported, is a bigger and far worse issue than what we’re discussing here.

I think I'm pretty creative and my RP includes slurs and calling people very vulgar things from time to time, because that's just the type of characters I play. I'd rather not play some neutered asexual homunculus but someone with aggressions and impulsive thoughts.

Oh yeah btw are we just going to ignore how inherently subversive this tactic is and how easily this sort of behavior can just turn into bad faith acting so quickly.

The chat logging system is not a target practice range. Don’t ‘blow off emotional steam’ on someone just extending their perception of writing capabilities. It should be used only when a case calls for it, stemming from a report.

Like a police precinct requesting random forensic reports on an officer’s neighbour because his trashcans were left out too long

It’s a gross misuse of administrative systems. That’s all I have to say on the matter.

It's a bleak, and dark environment. People are being put on literal death. Cops beat civives ruthlessly to death. Seeing a slur IC is one of the mildest thing that can happen to you in character and somehow, the fact that people are willing to punish players for something that is said IC concerns me.
Yes, you don't like somethig that's being said: have you tried DM'ing the player in question?

Have you done your absolute best to ensure that the player didn't say any of this with some OOC targetting in mind? Staff should be open for dialogue, no matter how offensive something is, and shouldn't resort to an outright ban just because some bad words were said ICly. That is why players want you as staff to begin with: because you're meant to be someone who can take on the pressure sometimes.

Every nuance has to be covered when it comes down to writing. Even if it's just a bunch of words that you don't really like. I'm not fond of using slurs, but I think we should respect the artistic liberty as long as it's not used maliciously. Everybody has their own conception when it comes down to expressing and creating a character and as long as no OOC harm and no OOC targetting is being committed, I don't see an issue with this. If players are being disruptive, they can be PM'd in-game to cool it.

My suggestion is that from here on out, you need to apply a character auth in order to be licensed on vulgar language so we can ensure that vulgar language is integral to the character's roleplay.

On other note, why not push in the next update a feature where the client themselves can censor words that are being typed. This has been a widely used method in games where typing is the only means of communication, to ensure a safe multiplayer experience.

How do you put out an oil fire?

it's actually pretty worrying that a few members of staff decided to go on a rampage and go through the server logs to check every instance of the word being used, no matter in what context or who was saying it. there's a fine line between a shithead minge joining to call people slurs and an actual roleplay with a real character (like lasse)

i don't intend to ramble too much about the game setting or whatever, it's honestly already been done to death in this thread alone. i do have to mention though that a lot of arguments here kind of fall flat.

people are antagonistic, the shitty backwards society of c24 is driving them to the edge. hatred is constantly spewed. there will definitely be people who cannot let go of their blind hate and those kinds of characters should not be moderated unless they're excessive and/or oocly malicious. i also don't get the point of subtly implying someone is homophobic just because their character is. does that mean i'm an ss officer because i have a civpro whitelist?

the best solution imo is bravo's suggestion, if someone is uncomfortable with their character getting called a slur then they should oocly notify the other player(s) and call it a day on that topic, then continue with rp. it's not that deep.

It is, and i was there for a brief time when this little "Target practice" situation with the chat logs happened. @M!NT and @ultima just randomly searching up the words "Faggot" all over the logs. Unsure what came out of it yet, but it ain't something good to do, the fact that they just randomly search up words and then later on ban people for saying them is silly and i'd say unfair.

It's not something that should be done at all and remains as a clear case of abuse of your position, if no one reported it there is NO NEED, to look it up or warn/ban the player in question. What they have done is a clear example of what not to do and what they should avoid, i was skeptical of the fact of even posting something like this because of this unfair and outright silly ban that happened and having the fear of being silenced or warned/banned too. But to be honest? I don't mind it at this point, i'm just mad that people can't say what they want in a Roleplaying GAME just seems silly and completely unnecessary, it fits the setting entirely, as it is the 2000's and homophobia and racial slurs like that were really common and REMAIN quite common as of today.

Not allowing people to say it just because one or two people take it personally seems stupid, sure, just don't say it when they are around. But looking through the logs and warning them because you don't like it is not something that should be done and i hope it has been taken care of accordingly, i said it already and will say it again, this is completely ridiculous and i thought staff would've thinked twice before even doing something like this.
I expected something better.

bit concerning that IC is no longer treated purely as IC, suppose all combine players are raging psychopaths irl because they enjoy playing as one on this roleplay server

It is deeply concerning, IC should remain IC, not take it OOC and start crying about the issue on forums. This ban was stupid and completely unnecessary.

Oh please, mainstream media uses homophobic slurs and racial pejoratives all the time, even modernly. I guess movies from Wes Anderson and shows like It’s Always Sunny, and Gilmore Girls aren’t creative at all. Modern rappers use homophobia and transphobia all the time, and still get Grammys yearly. Go listen to Auntie Diaries from Kendrick Lamar. His execution was miserable and offensive, but numerous LGBT fans applauded the message after the initial shock and polarization. You can absolutely utilize the terms creatively, it’s the context and narrative that determine its impact. I’m not advocating for anyone in the community to, no one in this community is capable of doing it in an interesting way.

guys pls just dont say slurs its not that deep you can roleplay without needing to
