Willards is a great server, do not get me wrong! However, one thing I cannot stand is how the citizen models are still in the same old 2004-era style besides a few chance reskins. The option to select your hair and beard is wonderful, but I could easily do without it if my citizen's model was in a higher definition similar to the Civil Protection models and other factions.

It has come to my attention that many players and staff of Willards are relatively new to the gamemode, so I'll provide an introduction for y'all. Take into account the detail of the citizen models in the HL2TS2 pack, which you can easily look up on the steam workshop. There's no giant grocery list of models, in fact, they're very similar in size and selection to the OG HL2 Citizen models, but each skin is a vital difference and characteristic change that allows for any sort of character to be played. I got a normal 'bald' citizen model, but with one skin change, he can go from looking like some blonde English skinhead to a young Latino or Arab guy. It's amazing and it was done years ago, whereas while Willard is years ahead of many other servers in functionalities like GUI, crafting, etc. But woefully behind in terms of graphical design for citizens. When I see people who want to RP as creative concepts and diversify their portfolios, wanting to play characters from Latin America, the Middle East, and Hell, even just wanting to play someone that looks different from the HL2 models that in several European countries, are old enough to drink, and they're unable to properly convey or make their character unique due to the graphical limitations enforced by the age and lack of variety of the models and skins? That itself disappoints me.

HL2TS2 models are definitely protected by the owner and you cannot use them for obvious reasons (though I would look into it, Willards is a huge server and the servers these were originally used for have gone the way of the dodo.) But I'd love to see any developer in this server perform a graphical update or reskin of the models, and make them look good.

This was more of an unstructured rant than an actual suggestion, and I apologize, so I will restate what I'd love to see in my conclusion: Update the citizen models, especially the male ones, as they're all in a bad need of a facelift. It'd probably take several days of constant admin requests asking for skin changes and whatnot if you can't think of any other way for a quick customization and adaptation for all players joining a server post-update, but once that's over with, general roleplay would be a lot more immersive. We all want to see our characters look the way they do on the big screen, we don't want to have to pretend and imagine what they look like. I wanna play as a young Arab guy and have his model LOOK THE PART man, I wanna play as a black chick with dreads. I wanna play as a gruff Asian guy with scars and a natural-looking beard that doesn't look like he had armpit hair glued to his face. Detail FTW!

ATTACHED are some general photos of the models I am suggesting Willards should either base their facelift off of, or use entirely. I am just a messenger, so I can't imagine how difficult reworking it with all the clothes/meshes/etc. would be, but I think it'd be for a great cause. I'll also attach the workshop link for anyone that would like to review the models, either as a developer looking for inspiration or as a player wanting to see if my suggestion/critique is in the right place.

Right. Well, the TNB models have their own set of issues as far as I'm aware. Though, as long as the mesh of the head and neck is still the same, I think that it could be possible that the skins could be replaced. However, we have to be very careful about taking skins from other communities (such as TNB) and putting them into our asset packs. I'd assume anything we need to do either needs to be made by ourselves, or we need to communicate with the author of any content we'd like to repurpose.

Regardless, I'll leave this up to @kawasaniac

i'm all for more customization but refer to this post, you'd have to triple, quadruple the work, i think. there's a reason why you can have a badass male_07 with a crewcut and a beard:

and the TS2 models, cool as they were for the time, go against the grain of the HD models found in alyx and the recolors of such. you'd have to get someone to re-do them from the ground up.

so, to put it into three things, here's what would have to be done, in an indescribable amount of effort:

1. texture work
2. model work
3. artstyle re-hash

100% support this it's been too long we've had these ancient models and I think an update like this will see more diverse characters come onto the server from other countries and former professions.

OH definitely, I was just using the TNB models as an example for what I would consider top-notch quality. I think it'd be ridiculous to suggest directly porting the models, although if the creators were cool with it, I'd totally be in favor. Redesigning some of the skins available on Willards's models and updating them would be a great update for what we've got, since a lot of models are downright ugly (not in the attractiveness sense, in the game and humanity sense, some of them have no eyebrows and weird makeup and misshapen lips, especially on the black female models and the male_06 model.) Using HL2TS2's pack as a basis and example for what good HD models look like would be amazing.

I'm definitely a radical in this camp and I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but I would gladly sacrifice different hair/mustache styles for prettier HD models. I'm not a fan of the custom hair/beard options, as while they were implemented amazingly, it's NOT the willard developers' fault, moreso it's the hair/beard models themselves, they just look tacky. My bearded Asian guy looks like he shaved off his body hair and taped it on his face, and that's not the implementation of the hair/beard model so much so as it's the model itself, not my thing.

EDIT: Also, I'll attach 4 screenshots as an example of the variety of what I'd love in a new updated/facelifted willard's citizen models. You have the male_04 bald guy model, and you have 4 skins, but each of them look like completely different characters with different ethnicities to boot. One even has visible chest-hair! I've wanted to make a young Arab character for quite sometime, and I just could not do him justice with a male_09 or male_07.

Our models are as up-to-date as they can be. I don't see why we'd need extra.

I hope I don't sound personally combative, but I'm just really passionate about the opportunity to potentially play an Arab character and have him look the part. Prettier models are possible, and as you see in this pack here, it has a tenth of the file size, so overloading players with a humungous file via only giving the models a facelift/update should be a non-issue. Again, I am not saying Willards should just outright use another model-pack from another server, but you CAN make changes that won't result in the file becoming even more bloated than normal.

Yes.
Im tired of seeing the standardized Male_07 model. Even though its iconic, taking some new facemaps to add to the already extensive models avoids the idea of everyone pretty much looking the same. Besides clothing and beards and haircuts.

We've got a good framework in place, we just need more variety in the face. Like idk, People who actually look like the characters they are actually portraying besides eighty version of male_07 like its outta an old school Mendel sfm.

We're already above the "normal" source limits with our civie models, only thanks to the skillful omega powers of Kawa (our 3D modeler) have we managed to get so far with them and they're super close to the absolute limits. We'd like to reserve whats left for clothes / or whatever we might need in future

We MIGHT add some more face skins in the future but that is only if we're even able to smash the limits even more
