The talk range is obnoxiously low, there were moments where technically you would hear the person in the same room at a reasonable distance, but in-game it's not the case. It always felt off of how much closer I need to get in order to listen to one's conversation. Take these screenshots as an example.

This is how we started, the person on the desk being the prime example of this complaint. At first we thought he was being silent, until the two next to him were responding to his open answers. All the people around them couldn't hear the guy on the desk.

This is how everyone ended up getting closer, just to hear what the main invidual had to say. This is kinda ridiculous.

It would be great to increase the talk range so people don't have to bunch up as close in order to hear a conversation. I've had this issue a lot of times in different scenarios.

The range for /w is fine as it is. I'm unsure how well the range is for /y. It's probably low too.

its actually criminally low, it should be upped a fair ton.

agreed. I want to be able to metagame the people from the sewers just by standing at the theater entrance.

The talk range was made to prevent things like metagaming and to add more realism to how far you could hear people whispering, talking, or yelling.

Whisper chat is sensibly low, talk range on the other hand is not. Not being able to hear someone in the same room is not 'realism'.

The talk range is the way it is right now because we've had glaring issues with people on the streets being able to hear people below them in the sewers, or people in apartments being able to "hear" everything on the floor above and below them, citizens in the plaza being able to hear entire interrogations in the Nexus, people being able to wait outside metabases to hear what's going on inside, and more.

While not ideal, the solution to all of the above was to simply lower the chat range. I still believe the pros outweigh the cons, even if you have to move a little closer to speak to someone.

It would be cool if there was a listening stance that would ever so slightly increase your talk range

Like, if you're in a standing animation, you pick up people talking from a little further away, because it's implied you're paying attention to something (either eavesdropping or attending a speech)

On combine revival, there was a feature to bug walls.

A simple solution that caters to what Neonity said is to just make the "Talking..." alert that hovers above your head visible from a further distance. that way you know when someone's talking without the global range being increased and the aforementioned issues reoccurring.

From what I understand, /mev works really well. Maybe we could implement a second chat range for longer-distance eavesdropping, with the longer chat range using something similar to /mev where people can only hear from longer distance if they can actually see the person that's chatting.

Encase that's badly written, here's a example;

Player A is talking to player B. Player B is within 1000SU (Source Units), the hypothetical default value for normal chatting.
So, they can both talk without any issues.

Player C is eavesdropping. They are beyond 1000SU. However, because Player A & B are chatting out on the streets, player C knows what they're talking about because they can see player A & B visually.

Maybe even have the text be slightly jarbled or muffled in some way. The extended range for visual eavesdropping could be 1.5x or 2x the default chatting range.

Step closer to the one talking my friend.

If you still can’t hear them just pretend you can, nod your head a few times so it looks like you’re listening.
bad instructions, i missed the details, -rep mentorship
