I have had more than a dozen run-ins with Civil Protection. In my two months of playing on this server, I have had countless interactions with civilians. Each civilian is a unique being. They roleplay in their own distinct way - whether it be an accent, an attitude, a physical feature, etc. When I look at the citizen faction, I see a... a fucked up mouth. Cavities here and there with white teeth or yellow teeth or even missing teeth. Now, in contrast, Civil Protection has barely any unique beings. All white perfect teeth with no individual or story being each tooth. Every interaction I've had with Civil Protection, most of the time, starts with a voice line or ends with a voice line. Each time I talk to a Civil Protection, no effort to engage in roleplay is created. These characters sit down at a post on the street, wait thirty minutes, then move to another post. Any attempt at interaction with them follows with a "Move along!". What I am trying to say, at the current state, is that Civil Protection provides no roleplay to your standard civilian. They act as NPCs that stand idly by waiting for something illegal to happen. I understand that Civil Protection has a code that they have to follow, but they aren't perfect. They aren't Overwatch. I can't tell the difference between an i5 and an RL anymore because they act the same. On paper, that might sound good. All the cops are uniform and the same. Practically, it doesn't.

I honestly hate ranting and wanted to hear people's opinions on this.

I agree and disagree. There are CPs with their own stories, their own ways of how they got to where they are. CPs look and act blank because they have to be. In private, they are obviously much different.
Don't even think they can interact with the general populace without it being brief.

I mean the whole point is to hide the identity of the CP units so they can't really add a lot in their description, they can add how they sound and how well they polish the uniform or, how high they are, it's really limited, but good descriptive wording is highly recommended, so they can somewhat tell the difference. cause if they go out on patrol in a shitty uniform they get a strike.
same as IRL police, they have a dress code that needs to be met, and if not they get yelled at.

i can somewhat agree, that's why i am always at the work-desk interacting with citizen giving them stuff to do, but keep in mind CP aren't suppose to be talking with citizen or be actively engaging with them, cause the CP faction looks down on them, so the only reason a CP would be talking to a citizen is if they are reporting something or the CP is buying stuff,
now with the move alone situation, it depends on whats happening, is the CP already busy?, is something happening?, is the CP responding to something? it really depends on if the CP is busy or not but if CP are telling a citizen to move along without intent to RP that's a problem also it does depend on the CP and who it is really

Personally I always try to add some flavor to my RL and not make him look like a cookie cutter cop. Obviously this is restrained both by role and by faction, but if you dig a little deeper every cop is different. The few robocops I know, I can count on my fingers.
Mostly, we need to keep up this facade, even though I wish we could be more unique in our approaches. I still will not have Terranova-level cops around. It'd be good to compromise

I've begun harassing CPs with the odd inappropriate comment here and there just to provoke some kind of response. It works wonders.

Is this what you call unique? A bit hypocritical to call us out on roleplay, when I see you guys pulling off stuff like this.

Don't get me wrong, civilians are the blood of the server, as they will constitute most of the roleplay. I agree with them being "unique beings" that have "their own distinct ways" of roleplaying. These colorful interractions are indeed something.

What happens in HL2 right at the beginning when you try to get near a cop? Exactly: they eithet tell you to move along, or hit you with their stunstick. Cops are actually afraid of fraternizing with civs due to the fact that they can get into trouble.

They aren't Overwatch.

We do fall under the nominative of "Overwatch Forces" despite the fact that we're not augmented. I can agree on us being not being perfect in RP (quite frankly, nobody is) but maybe we should look into why cops are acting as they do. As an RL, I never tell civs to move along if they got something to tell me, but civilians shouln't just consider us best buddies.

Wraygun raises a lot of good points, and it comes into my general criticisms of the server in general as it stands right now. The standard of RP quality accepted currently is lower than others in the past; that means that citizens like those provided in those screenshots are indeed just sort of part and parcel of citizen RP... I suppose in that way we can't argue much about the contents of a CP's character externally.

I will say however that perhaps the lack of CPs interaction isn't down to their characters being underdeveloped or cookie-cutter, but indeed because they will literally get told off for talking to citizens and slacking. I don't know if it's a thing here in V2 but I recall in V1 CPs would get shouted at by Dispatch for taking a break for like five minutes, which is crazy.

Of course, CPs have their jobs and they have to appear as generally unapproachable figures and I think to that extent the CPs have done their job well, but it would be nice for the community to see more of that personal side in their interactions with characters that don't have Arabic for a description. I actually think it'll go a long way in getting rid of the subtle yet real animosity between either faction, as hopefully when actual citizen roleplayers see Civil Protections with varied and likeable personalities (this doesn't mean they can't be mean, likeable means noticeable and enjoyable), there will hopefully be fewer threads on them for a lack of character or for being robocops.

Working in the Sunrise cafe before its shut down gave me insight into a few CP characters and the personalities they had. They were able to talk (even if brief) and you could see their personalities... they were still Cops, and you weren't best buddies with them, but you had that insight that made me think: 'Huh, that's a cool character.' instead of 'Ugh, CP? RP police haha!!'. I think more freedoms for CPs being able to interact with citizens on a more casual (yet still formal) level would be appreciated, rather than it being a pure official or abusive basis.

I suppose my reply isn't so much a complaint but rather offering my thoughts on how things could improve, since I don't think a lot of this is the CP's fault directly. I admire the server's intent to keep close to the gameplay seen in HL2, but I think the community would benefit from more cross-faction interactions that can result in some character development and relationships from any degree for all parties involved.

Don't "you guys" us. Don't group citizens. Honestly, CPs are much easier to group together than Citizens. Unlike with Citizens, there's more of a sense to conform and to imitate your superiors in a closed-off faction environment, meaning you're likely going to find a lot of CPs doing repeat actions, unlike Civilian factions.

Citizen doesn't require an application to join, so it is expected to see some odd characters. Apart from this, I feel like I get more roleplay out of Citizens than Civil Protection either way. I feel like a faction that engages with roleplay within their own faction seems a bit like gatekeeping. Your statement on Overwatch forces: you are not augmented or mind-wiped to think a certain way. I don't expect to see i5's that act like Overwatch soldiers. You compare Civil Protection to Cops - cops don't seclude themselves from society. They actually engage with their community and act like people while protecting and serving.

Yes. Please don't group a whole faction. Citizens are a faction, but they aren't grouped together like Civil Protection or Vortiguants. We have sub-groups like loyalists and the resistance which Citizens can be a part of. To be honest, with no offense intended, I'm not surprised that Civil Protection mains see themselves as roleplay experts. I have yet to see any honest character development or even CHARACTER, to begin with from Civil Protection. I have seen more development in CCA, a faction that literally sits in the Nexus for most of the time has more character development than any Civil Protection officer I've met. I have a character in Civil Medical Union, and even when that character (who'd I think would have a bit more respect amongst the Civil Protection) is able to interact with Civil Protection - he gets instantly shut down with a VC. Last night I have seen an incident of power gaming amongst Civil Protection and I literally went "this is the norm". So please don't use the excuse of "you guys".

To be fair - I think this is a management thing. If I am hearing correctly, Civil Protection is punished for engaging with passive roleplay amongst civilians which seems to be an elitist prospect. I get that this is an oppressive machine, but I think roleplay goes over immersion in some places. I would more rather have Civil Protection talk and engage with the community, which might break immersion, than have your classic HL2 NPCs.

You forgot to include the 4'10 Femboy

If you want unique RP with CPs, get the permit that allows you to sell Audiobooks and price it reasonably and see your CP customers flood right in.

Good.

I get that this is an oppressive machine, but I think roleplay goes over immersion in some places.

I agree, but you can get your roleplay with other citizens. CPs are not here to help you; they're here to keep the city stable. You shouldn't even have an IC reason to engage in casual conversation with a CP. You know they're doing a job, and you know that said job is very dangerous in the way that they are being watched all the time. You know that they will probably punish you for trying to talk to them. Talk to a citizen instead. Under no circumstances will I support a TN-style mall cop CP system.

That's not to say that cops should go out of their way to disturb citizen roleplay; they shouldn't. What they should be doing is upholding a lore-accurate and realistic atmosphere. That is their purpose.

I would more rather have Civil Protection talk and engage with the community, which might break immersion, than have your classic HL2 NPCs.

CPs here are not even close to NPCs. The level of interactivity you can achieve with a different player is astronomically higher than what you could achieve with an NPC. Just because the cop tells you to move along or to stop talking doesn't mean that's all they're going to say or do. An NPC will stand there and do nothing until the end of time. A human will walk around, kick rocks, etc. Just because they aren't supposed to interact with you doesn't mean they won't.

The hard truth is that CPs are side characters, as are all other factions. Their primary purpose is to supplement the setting of the gamemode you're playing in.

The purpose of these supplementary factions is to turn a new player into a regular.

The Civil Protection faction is a spectrum of a lot of different kinds of characters. I believe the original poster just got unlucky or never really pried for something more from those he interacted with.

I know maybe 2 strictly HL2 behaving Metrocops

I don't want TerraNova level Civil Protection but I see what you mean. Too much like the games, but, the faction leads are trying to balance the universe with the Roleplay. The faction is very diverse in each player's approach and the lack of acknowledgement of the fact that most are trying has kneecapped this thread due to your interactions with job-focused officers and will be written off as an incorrect assessment. Which is unfortunate because you have some good points here and there.

There are ongoing changes inside of the faction to help find and maintain balances in all areas so that it does not harm Roleplay for everybody. Not going too soft or too hard. You're more likely to catch more personable Civil Protection during down time due to less observation.

All in all, this is redundant and an inaccurate picture of the players in the faction. I would say you got incredibly unlucky if it was truly so bad.

It's a mixed bag, really. Most of the units in the force do have their own quirks, thoughts, dreams, and fears, but as stated earlier, they are discouraged from showing them. To a degree, rightfully so, but this often translates into lackluster /me's and voice commands. Cops are supposed to be distant and - to a degree - unapproachable and scummy. Some pull this off really well. Others almost seem too nervous OOCly to let that proper beat-cop come out.

Most units do want to engage in more interesting roleplay with the populace, just not when theres other units around who can judge or report them or when theres a certain OfC:STICK-up-my-ass.

But jokes aside, this is icly an important part of the oppression units must feel. We shouldn't be able to engange in long conversations unless we make an effort in hiding it.

So here comes the problem. The map is linear as fuck, no alleways, no nothing. It's all just a giant street with shops on the side. How the hell am I supposed to find some privacy?

If you mean incredibly unluck to be every Civil Protection I have interacted with for the past two months has been RP disengaging then I suppose so.
