I am brash when citizens approach me with stupid questions.

"When's the next workshift" translates to "Do I look like a civil worker to you? Get out of here."

I have a job to do, I am not here for your entertainment, I am not a tourist guide and I certainly don't care for your opinion on the weather. If you have a concern about a potential violation, approach me. If you want to report a violation, approach me. If you have anything that you want to approach me about that is not a violation or socio-stability concern - go away. I'm trying to not get 99'd.

The last time I had a somewhat long conversation with a citizen, which was within the scope of my job and was concerning this citizens behaviour, a scanner floated next to me just to ensure I wasn't having said friendly chat.

We are oppressed too, just in a different way. In some ways, we are in two boats following the same river. Difference being: If you rock my boat, I tell you not to or beat you up.

well said

though i do think that cops shouldn't take citizens' words at face value. if a citizen reports a crime, there better be some evidence or else you're just wasting everyone's time

"i got mugged in the slums" tough luck pal don't go in the slums

the only exception is higher-tier loyalists that should always be heeded in lieu of regular citizens

Honestly I thought that one was self-evident but good to be stated regardless.

i think this thread is more of an 'shit on CPs' rather than discussing the two points that NaughtyNicholas said at the start.

This in and of itself is not a positive thing though? It may be "lore accurate" (which is funny because WN is massively divergent) to have a CP faction still stuck in the days of a 2013 Clockwork server where they're literally discouraged from roleplaying with citizens but it sure as hell isn't fun for anyone else.

The reason Civil Protection ends up with the reputation it has across multiple communities (including this one it seems) is because it doesn't matter what kind of character development the units have if they never show it to anyone else but one another. When all units seem to do is tell you to go away unless they have reason to search you or beat you or whatever people just start avoiding the faction entirely because they add nothing to their experience.

It sure as hell can't be actually fun for the units. I've played under a system like this for years and it wasn't until I played under communities and systems where you were allowed to engage with citizens and such that I realised I'd been living in an incredibly boring bubble that does nothing but push citizens into never interacting and the faction to be labelled as shit.

That's not to say that cops should go out of their way to disturb citizen roleplay; they shouldn't. What they should be doing is upholding a lore-accurate and realistic atmosphere. That is their purpose.

Cops inherently disturb citizen roleplay if all they do is come knocking to search you, beat you or kill you. If you can't actually interact with the faction beyond this then they're no better than OTA.

Your gut instinct is going to be I'm exaggerating but Daniel literally just said cops risk getting 99'd if they DARE have a chat to a citizen. That doesn't build roleplay. That doesn't let me see what sort of character that cop is. Why should I be inclined to think there's a character under there at all if all I see is VC's and batons?

CPs are the forefront of the server. They are the first things you see when you RP as a civilian.

They need to be good at fostering RP and not killing it off.

Sorry to add to this again but I've just spent a good solid amount of time on server trying to interact with cops or even watching what they do.

Beyond patrolling (which is fair enough) any attempt to even make passive conversation when a unit is doing literally nothing else other than standing on a corner or in the plaza felt like drawing blood from a stone.

All I got were one-word responses or very short answers that gave me nothing to go off of, nothing to bounce a conversation off. Just awkward silence where I eventually disengaged because I wasn't going to get anything. I walked away and the units invariably silently repositioned to stand motionless in another part of the area and either tab out or just stare.

Nobody really approached them. Nobody engaged. They didn't stop to engage anyone except one another. Which is fine but nobody else can get involved in it. In fact the only time I did see something was a drug addict approach some cops. The extent of the interaction? A cop walking him across the plaza, smashing him across the back of the head with their baton in an ambush and dumping him.

I don't understand how this style of gameplay is fun for cops or citizens anymore. Its something I haven't seen done in years in various other communities because there are far better ways to do it.

Having a faction who is afraid to interact for being punished or so unwilling to interact even in situations where they must be bored out of their fucking skulls does nobody any good.

This is what we need, had you not gotten killed for the Moscow paper we could have actually seen more of the storyline, had members from City 3's CCA Board come over to discuss talks, in the end it just got killed off like other events

I am going to have to lock this thread... just like the other 5000000000000 topics on the same forum of conversation.

You are asking leads to literally control peoples RP. Which we have no interest in doing. If someone wants to be generic cop #5324 they can be, leads aren't going to stop them. If they want to play a character with unique quirks, they can do. If they want to be a bit generous or corrupt to civs, they can freely do so. Nothing stops them from doing so.

Complaints about CP come up quite often targeted at the whole faction even when we don't control what most CPs do. We simply allow them the freedom to do as they please given they aren't going outright rogue without auths or breaking the point of the faction. Sometimes someone writes a whole complaint over the actions of 1 cp. We are sick and tired of it, so going to have to ask you to cut it out and report individual CPs instead like you are meant to.

Anyway, CPs are fully able to converse with Civs... just not for prolonged periods of time. They are free to use stores, free to buy items and food, free to talk to civs, etc. As long as their duty is not being interrupted while they got something to respond to. Talking is fine, repeating myself but it is okay given it's not PROLONGED periods of time. Dispatch and OfC's/RL's do not care if you talk to a civ, given you haven't been doing so for the last 10-15 minutes. Then they slap you if they see it.

In the end, the faction doesn't stop people. It's an entirely individual choice for each and every unit.
