"They have given us the strength we never could have summoned to overcome this compulsion."

The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for,
and I hate very much to leave it.."

Donnez-moi les cordes de la mort et avancez

Avec les fusils de la justice, pas du mensonge,

Je charge mes balles et je combats,

Non, je ne me laisserai pas vaincre par un rival meurtrier!

- Oath to Arceneaux

Gardez votre or, je garde ma puissance
Soldat prussien passez votre chemin.

-"The leader of our modern age. The great Frank who showed us, the French people the new way in this new Brave World. I followed him, I would have died for him - if he hadn't died first at the hands of those terrorists... I know the true murderer is Orwell. His coup of the Guard and the collapse of City Thirteen is nothing but a conspiracy which the arch-nemesis of Arceneaux eventually won."-

-"A political prisoner... the lowest of the low. Yet he came to influence me in more ways I could have imagined. This old man was a good man; one who bled... I stood up for him, for I knew he had the intentions of good within him. Instead of granting him freedom from chains, the chain itself killed him. I've led my life long believing to be right in what I fight for... but this, left a sour taste in my mouth. It feels like a betrayal... yet he was an enemy, they say. But to me, he was a friend..."-

I. Arceneaux's Death

II. Oil Rig

ZgvMAk3.jpeg

Tasked with clearing out an old, decrepit oil rig for the Volunteer Expeditionary Workers... desperate or brave, does it really matter? The cracks are visible within the Genevan Guard of Orwell... this is not the Republican Guard of Arceneaux, but a militia. A mix of volunteers like myself, albeit from Geneva; desperate people and convicts.

My belief that Arceneaux was killed from within, rather than by elements deemed as anti-civil has begun to grow on me. Whilst the Guard of Arceneaux believed in Fatherland, Future and Duty; these, do not believe in anything but themselves. They are the ragtag paramilitary force that Orwell so desperately tries to refurnish into his own... he does not know what he is doing. He lacks the charisma that made us follow Arceneaux. Instead, the desperation of these men are only graced by the admiration of their bravery.

Even the Political Conscripts, those sentenced to the pental battalions for their anti-civil crimes uphold a certain charm in their futile attempts to serve in order to regain the comfort they lost. I have seen it all, the death; the stench, the rottening... the ruins of London. These people have not seen war in its entirely, and should a struggle errupt between Orwell and the Diadochi of City Thirteen; then... these men will be the first to be slaughtered.

When I served Arceneaux; we stood at the rallies, heard the speeches; we believed in the inevitable victory over City Twenty-Four.. the battle that would seal our future and bring about a new glorious era for our people... but now, I am not so sure anymore. I shouldn't speak of such matters too loud, nor to anyone else...

I can say however, that I am surprised by the camaradie by the few I have had the chance to talk to... they are... people... even the convicts themselves are not bad people. Not like I once had thought. Now they serve with us, the 'cleaners' of the filth. I just wonder... if they'll stand a a chance when the real trials begin...

III. Slaughterhouse V

JuTiyTm.jpeg
"There is nothing left except for the dead that stand in guard to those that are yet alive. The others do not believe me... they do not see. Their fanaticism blinds them to the truth that we were forced to endure. We were not the first, nor will we ever be the last. Our lives thrown away, we are nothing but meat to them. We always have been... I understand that now. But the price could never have been worth it. Whatever it was that we came to seek... kill... exterminate.. it does not matter.. not anymore. We were the ones that were terminated. Like vermin. After everything we have done. We were nothing but rats... husks and bodies meant to feed the machine of war; the very machine that we had pledged our lifes to. We have taken life; and now... they came to claim our own."-

-"We are not the first, nor will we be the last. This is a cycle of repetition. It will continue, it will always continue... it will never end. For it is not meant to end. It is meant to be our final destination; the solution to the problem that have pestered our Occupant which we have served. They send us to our deaths, they always have... we just didn't believe it. Not until now. I will never be free... you all remind me of that. You all come to visit me when the sun has faded and darkness has fallen... I cannot sleep, for you all stare at me. Only one of you speak; whispering your words to me... I do not know yet whether it is poison, or medicine. I damn those who sent us here; I damn the Lieutenant... I damn the Captain... the Colonel... all of them. They are pawns in the game, just as us.... but they know it already. We fought because of conviction... but that is no more. No... only your eyes of death which stare at me whenever I close my eyes. I will never forget it; nor forget you all.... you were all left in the dark, while they got what they wanted. But your memory will never be forgotten; not by me... for you are etched into my brain like ink. You remind me of that each night as you come to visit me from beyond the veil. You stand at the threshold, clad in uniform of blood and death; your bodies and face torn apart by this endless war which we are engulfed in. I cannot play this game anymore... I cannot."-

-"I can no longer fight this battle for them..."-

-"But I can fight it for all of you-.... perhaps then...-"-

-"You will no longer visit me in my dreams..."-

Michael Yards
@Sushi082
Comfortably Numb
-"Difficult to express it-... but I could never have guessed that you would be the one that I came to lean upon the most. You came to us a dissident, now I am-.... something which I cannot express without the fear that they will hear. I am glad that you have avoided combat for so long-.... I could almost say that I am jealous of how you succeded. You wouldn't believe the things we've seen-.... what we have been forced to endure. We are alike, you and I. I could never have thought it do be so merely a few months ago, but now-... nothing is more certain than this fact"-

-"I have already engaged myself in activites I never thought possible-.. I have spoken to the ones I once considered an enemy; I have contemplated the immediate thought-... and what scares me, is that I truly believe in that thought. What else can I do? For I have seen the true side of the ones that I am fighting for-... death and decay... betrayal and abandonment. We were never cared for-... we have only been used. All of it has been a waste of life..."-

-"I want to run-... but I cannot. I want to scream, but I fear the words my voice would speak. I wait for you... and who ever else you may bring. You must go-..."-

-"I shall wait..."-

-"I shall hope..."-

"I have seen the other side. The nothingness that enshrouds everything. You think there is a Hell or a Heaven? There is nothing but darkness... I thought you were dead. When I was dead I saw everyone that had came before me, but I did not see you. Not even when the darkness gave way to the green energy that brought me back... this world is nothing but pure hell, but we both know the alternative is not a possibility. When I was first you I thought you stubborn-... you refused to flee with me. You decided to stay- and so did I, even if I fell into the contact of those I now fight for. You can only imagine how glad I was to see you..."

"Please, Michael..."

Be careful.

For the true challenge lies in the City which we once called
home.

Raymond Arceneaux
A Messiah clad in a coat
-"The one we followed, the one we believed in. A hero of the new world. His ambition and strive to reinforce our identity in our time of crisis is something that will never be forgotten. Struck by enemies from within, with the usual scapegoats... no doubt the political structure of City 24 had something to do with his death... now I find myself forced to serve in the Genevan Guard, whilst Paris burns as the Diadochi of Arceneaux fight over the fragments of his former empire - leaving his believers in the dark.."-

Schrödinger Equation
-"I haven't had a drink in a long time. As I drowned my sorrows, I found him. That man. He called himself 'Noel', brandishing the brown Dissident armband like a slave-collar. I did the unthinkable and parted my lips. I spoke to him. Our chat was one fuelled by alcohol and a social interaction I haven't felt for a very long time. He spoke of his troubles, his past - and his pain. Many would turn someone like him down, but I didn't. I gave him the coupons numbering sixty credits, knowing that he needed it more than me. I should have followed him, made sure he made it back all right.. but I know it would be frowned upon if seen. A distrust of my loyalty is dangerous now. Especially in this climate with ever changing stances of the political aspect of this city I now find myself interwined with."-

-"I just hope he made it back all right... I got this strange feeling, as if I missed him. Do I? Interacting with those branded as 'dissident' elements, anti-social elements... is dangerous. But the political order has been shaken up completely.. there is nothing but chaos. And I'm starting to believe - that whatever we were fighting for was not what we first thought..."-

The Maverick
-"Truth be told? I didn't think it would come like this... at the beginning of my transfer to the Genevan Guard, beneath the command of Orwell; once the enemy of Arceneaux. I thought lowly of you.. I do not know why. A Maverick who did what he felt. Or perhaps you thought it was for the best all the time? You surprised me... I blame myself for being so wrong about you. You are a different breed entirely, unlike most men and women I have met before. Unlike those at the top of the food-chain, you actually care. You do not have your own interest at heart, but those who you serve with; and even those on the outside. "-

-"I used to trust no one but myself.. I know people cannot be trusted, not in this world. Even if we share much. But you have proven me wrong in so many things. I do trust you. I feel like... there is something else. I was once blinded by pure belief, fanatism.. but now, I am starting to doubt myself in many ways. I shouldn't think about it too much... no. That is how we perish. If not on the fields of battle, then in a dark cell; awaiting our execution. We have brought dead to many, perhaps it is just.. I- .. I do not know. I just... hope that my trust in you is the right choice. And I hope that you trust me.. I haven't really had a friend before. I was a loner. But now, I am not.."-

-"How things have turned out-... who could have truly seen them become what they have? Us-.. together? Like this? I have never been in this situation before-... this sensational freedom of emotions that I feel? I have never felt it before-... no.. I was taught not to feel it. I was-.. and I still am a soldier fighting yet for a Cause that I now truly believe in. But us two-... I am conflicted. What I feel for you is nearly impossible to describe and that makes me afraid. I have never before been afraid-... of fighting nor of dying. I did not have to. But now it now all... different."-

-"You held me in my arms when I was dead-... and I should have been dead. In the darkness that surrounded me I saw the faces of the dead that long have haunted me with their presence and gaze-... yet I was not afraid. I saw the light at the end of it-... illuminating the path ahead across the darkness. I felt as if it was my time-... but then-... I was brought back. I-.. I should not be here; I shouldn't be alive. For I have already died once-... and I am unable to do it again-... I-... I am afraid. Afraid of losing you-... of dying. Yet this world is built upon death and destruction, even after what mankind has accomplished against the Occupant."-

-"I am afraid, Marcus-... and I think-... I always have been. But not-.. it is different. I fear it all-... and I fear carrying the burden of losing you."-

-"I am afraid..."-

-"I am.... afraid of it.."-

-"For I have seen what awaits on the other side..."-

-"And it is nothing."-

The Political Conscript
-"A woman dedicated to the penal division of the Genevan Guard. Political conscripts like her won't live for long unless she's lucky; those who fall out with the regime don't tend to live long. Despite this she seems to take her duty seriously, perhaps hoping for redemption through service? Whatever the cause, she's illusive and I sense something strange about her. I wonder what could have sent her here, a city-girl to serve with hardened soldiers, those who have seen beasts and monsters only believed in fairy-tales. Now she knows they are all real - at least in the state we find ourselves now. I hope she survives..."-

Aurelia Auclair

The Savoyard
-"A Savoyard woman who serves the new regime with flying colours. Our first meeting came upon us at the Oil Rig. I was surprised at her good French, must mean that she must have born closer to the French border of Savoy prior to the Ascension. I saw her in action, taking hits and dodging them like hellfire itself. This wasn't her first cleansing of the necro that corrupts our new world. I admire her and feel somewhat... drawn to her as a friend. As we conversed in French, I told her about my participation in the liquidation of City 2 and the ousting of Blake.. my belief in the Genevan Guard and Orwell. I hope she understands the nature of those words and keep it to herself. Even if we fight the same enemy, and stand on the same side- sometimes; the real enemy might be the one on the inside. Unseen, but heard. I should take her up on that beer she spoke of and speak more."-

Lieutenant Borisov

@Jumbi-sama
The Lieutenant
-"The Lieutenant and the acting field officer in command.. out of all, he's the only one fighting with us on the frontline.. the others have the privilege of saying far from it. War has always been like that.. the higher-ups tend to stay far away from the fighting whilst others die to their orders. I respect the Lieutenant... a strange-man yet astounding and sparkling with authority. He clearly has survived odds than most haven't and seen things that no one should see... his personality changes and his mood-swings are clear to everyone. He's damaged - like the rest of us. Despite this he continues to lead; he strives in the heat of battle... he likes it.. just like me. In this world, there is not much to choose - but we've got a purpose at least. The only satisfaction is the instinct of survival and the adrenaline; we can never return to what one would call a 'normal' life in this world... no. It is too late for us. We live and die killing... that is what we are. I wonder how long he'll last; not many do in the service... but I hope that when his time comes - it will be quick... not many are that lucky."-

Thoughtcrime
-
"I did something I never have done before... after the ordeals of the past, Ketterson and the political upheaval in Geneva. I somehow found myself in the derelict part of town... the downtrodden Indigent of the Underclass. I knew it was malignancy, thoughtcrime... betrayal. As I stumbled my way through the dirty pavement of grass where there once had been stone, I met the man and his compatriots. I knew exactly what sort of man he was... yet he spote to me more intellectually than anyone in the city ever has. He said he had once been part of the Elite of the City... even helped Callaway into power before it became his own demise as a fugitive. He knew Yards.. I did what I never have done before - I associated myself with the anti-social elements that I fought against for so many years... yet, for some reason... it felt right. They invited me, talked to me... tried to pursuade me. I do not know if it worked, or if I already was convinced of how wrong I am... he told me to say hello to Yards from him, stating that he would know who he was. I fear to say it, but something wishes for me to traverse the dangers again - to meet this man, and the others... for what reason, I do not yet know.."-

-"We did something I never believed possible-... we entered the Nexus. Not throug the usage of force or arms, but through a desperate act of alliance with the defectors of the Civil Protection. We had it-.. and then we lost it-.. and we lost you. I saw your body; I saw you dead-... yet you came back. Through the means of foul sorcery I cannot name, even though I myself have been subjected to it. Yet you were to pay a price for it-... able to only walk on Earth for the matter of two days before you were to return to the dirt. I do not know how to feel-.. it shouldn't have happened. You shouldn't have died in the first place-... you were the one to lead us upon this new world. And now without you... I fear that we stand lost and unsure of what to do."-

-"I miss you-... and I am sorry. I should not have left you in there alone-... I promised to protect you-... and I failed in that."-

-"Please-... forgive me, my friend... for I failed you."-

James Stewart
@Kryzys90

For Whom the Bell Tolls

-"You died in my arms.... I tried to shake you back to life, but in return; only your dead eyes stared back at me. Straight into my soul, like burning coal. This is my fault-... it is all my fault. I should have seen it coming-... I should've understood what they sent us into. And because of that- you are all dead... left to rot in that bunker. They'll call you heroes, fallen martyrs... but in reality- we were just pawns.. just like those men and women of the Republican Guard sent before us. I still see your face... your dead eyes... they stare back at me when I close my eyes. When I sleep; I do not sleep-... I dream. I dream of you, the dead... you all stare at me, with no life in your eyes-... your souls ripped out by the machine we serve. We serve as slaves for an unknown cause; one that is not of our own making... I-.. I am so sorry, Stewart. You came far, but... they wouldn't let you-.. no.. they hadn't planned for anyone of us to make it out. We were pawns-... slaves-... but now... now I know. I have always known... but I haven't had the courage... but now I do. I remember what you said; crying out in anguish in struggle against death- seconds before life left your body."-

-"Do not worry-... you are not trapped anymore. You are free... you are all free. Death is the only freedom we can have- for they will never let us go. No-... never... they seek to keep us trapped. But I will never forget- never. For you will continue to visit me in my dreams.. your pale eyes of death remembering me- that the only outcome of this... is my own peril."-

-"My own death..."-

Aleksei-Stael Von Anrep
@Processed_Grain

Flatlined..

-"You fought with us throughout the whole way-... you were with me when I held Stewart in my arms... his body riddled with bullets of those who had come before. His death and your own, was made by those who sent us in here. Into this hell... still- you fought... you bled-... you believed- and for that... you died. I do not know if I believe anymore. I have seen death, but this... this wasn't it. This was betrayal. You were already gone after I had gone out; and when my eyes awoke once more, you were dead... left to rot on the floor of this forsaken place. But I got your tag... yours and everyone elses. It is hard to understand that you are gone... taken in a moments flash."-

-"That is until I see you; your bloodied corpse... with no eyes, only holes of where they should be; staring back at me.. I try to scream, but my voice won't make a sound. I try to reach, but it is already too late. You are dead, but I am alive- that is my curse. You all make me remember, for the dead don't sleep... but the living do. But I cannot sleep anymore-... no... I cannot tell this to anyone. But sometimes I speak to you... when you visit me in my dreams. It comforts me... just as much as it dreads me."-

-"I know you will come tonight as well... like a reaper. I am not afraid... for you are not. I fear only for those they will send to their graves... forgive me..."-

Ahmad Khan
@GopnikPizzafox

Particle Ghost

-"You were the first... I couldn't believe it. We have fought... bled and survived. Yet this was the end-... I didn't see you fall. Only when I got back up; I saw what they had done to you. This wasn't supposed to be... no-.. this wasn't supposed to happen. You were beneath my command; I promised you all to return home, yet I failed. You all are gone, yet I am left to live. This isn't a blessing, but a curse.... like so many others, I remember your face. And I will for the rest of my life-... for you, like so many others; visit me in my dreams. Your cold eyes... your blank stare-... your eyes were open when you died; and your eyes remain so, when you speak to me from beyond the veil of the living. Your voice guided me through that place-.... you spoke to me, even if you weren't there anymore. And you still do... this wasn't supposed to happen.."-

-"I know where your loyalty stood... same as mine-... but you died in faith to it. I will not... for you died for them, but they didn't mind. They knew what they sent us into. The slaughterhouse... like the book. I read Kurt Vonnegut and his books, before... as a child. And just like his characters; we were pawns in a game we did not understand, nor wanted to play. We just wanted to do what we were told; because we believed in them. I do not think I believe anymore... even as you stare back at me across the room with your lifeless eyes... your body ripped to shreads. Just as I saw you at your final moment, you stand before me... unlike the others, you speak to me-... the others do not. They stare only; with no life behind their eyes... they are husks... a reminder of my failure... while you, too- remind me..."-

-"I am sorry... forgive me, Khan... I am so-... sorry..."-

Joe Moter
@joe moter

The Charlatan
-"A former loyalist and business-owner. Seems he made enemies with Callaway and had himself purged and put into the Militant Reserves as a political conscript. A former colleague and friend of Rick Ketterson too. Placed under my command, both Moter and Ketterson excelled despite their status as cursed and malignants. Despite his ferocity on the battlefield, his ability to kill to survive - he lacks discipline and retains his old ways.. although in an amusing way. I myself was the one who dared out into the desert of former Holland to find Moter bleeding in the middle of no-where, abandoned to die if it wasn't for me. Since Ketterson's death I have yet to see him, whether or not he has been sent away at the camps of the reserves whilst we await deployment or not - I do not know. I like him for what he is... genuine, if that is the right word. I just wonder if he has more to hide, or his true personality has been laid in front of me this whole time."-
-"You are dead... I cannot believe it. I am not-... sure.. we lost so many. I do not know what is happening to me... I-... I have seen death many times, but-... this is wrong... wrong. They caught you... like Stewarts. And they killed you.. I never saw the body... but I know-... I still see the dead eyes of Khan... Stewarts... Von Anrep... shit-fuck... why did they send us in there? Why us-... we have never... no... I understand now. Rick tried to tell me... yes... Ketterson tried, but I didn't listen- no... I was ignorant, a dumb idiot unable to think for myself... but now... now I know.

This war we are fighting... it is not the real war. It is the war of a slave, bound to a master without restraint; or so we think. You got caught in the middle... you willingly died.. for them? I do not understand, but something tells me it has to do with personality rather than ideology. No matter what you were... what you did... you did not deserve it. Just like Ketterson and everyone else... I'm unable to comprehend; whenever I close my eyes, the dead haunt me... their voices sharp and rasp, their faces pale... their skin etched into the bone like a starved child. Yours too... haunt me. I will never be free-... whenever I close my eyes- the dead stare right back at me... I am sorry, Joe-... I am so sorry... please... please-... forgive me..."-

Convict Ketterson
@LyingFox

A Convict of the Penals

-"A man in his older years... must be around his fifties, but life hasn't been kind to him. I first caught glance of him when we were dispatched to the old mines. I told him not to worry, for those old tunnels wouldn't be our grave... I was almost wrong about that. As the huge freak almost did me in twice, I found this simple convict to stand his ground and continue to fight. The old man still has much in him; imagine my surprise when I found him to still be alive by the end of it. I thought him gone when he suddenly called out on the radio; only to be shipped away with the others to the holding facilities as they wait for their next assignment. I myself, hold the freedom of traversing the city - I shall enjoy it.. perhaps Convict Ketterson will hold the same freedom as I do, if he survives his trial of ordeals.."-

-"I must say that I came to like you, Ketterson. You proved something to me. For so many years I had a near blind faith to what we had... it was in Arceneaux I found it. Somehow, I'm starting to doubt it.. the talks about the 'lesser' people.. those who have done something to earn the wrath of Our Benefactor. You showed me that something else.. I do not blame you, nor condemn you for your past transgressions.. nor do I really care, for I know the truth. You were braver than most, smarter and despite it - you still fought and bled beside us. You weren't much different.. you weren't a criminal like they said. You did what you believed was right. I stood there and vouched for you, hoped even that they would consider you what could be closest to a 'free man' in our world now. "-

-"But they kept the collar on you; the very same collar that came to be your death. When Marcus gave me the news, I couldn't believe it at first. They say you are a deserter.. that is how you died. I do not think nor fall into petty rumours. Something else happened to you. You had those who wished to see you harmed and dead... folks whose name ought not to be named, or perhaps I end up the same. Shit... it really hurts.. I haven't felt it for so long, sorrow.. I thought I had a heart of stone, hardened by the hardships we have endured. I have seen many things, felt; endured... but this? This was something else.. I did something that isn't like me. I drank until the sorrow was drowned; it felt good. But when I woke up, the same sorrow burdened my heart and mind. I do not know.. but for some reason, I feel... human?"-

-"I need to know what happened... what they did. It torments me, but still I do not know why; but I know I have a debt. That is why I must do it. I am conflicted... very. I am sorry for what happened to you. I am.. I try not to think too much, but there is nothing else to do really. There is nothing I can do... but find out."-

I hate it..
