Mardi Gras Casino - Nitro, West Virginia, United States of America

May, 2004

1734737679958.pngNobody knew just how high the stakes were about to get

Another day
Another spin of the roulette table
One more hand...

As the world comes crumbling down.

It's a quiet night at Mardi Gras Casino.

You're a patron - or a staff member.
Or... someone hoping to win against the house in other ways.

Either way, none of you expected the night to end the way it will.
When the stakes are higher than they've ever been - and ever will be,
.
.
.
.
Will you play one last game,
as the curtain falls?

Roles

Gambler (0/-)

A regular at the casino. Just another patron at the table, hoping you'll win big.

----

Casino staff -

Pit Boss/Floor Manager (0/1)

You manage the staff. On this night, only two tables.
As was predicted, not many folks showed up to the casino tonight. Staff numbers were adjusted accordingly.

Dealer (0/2)

You manage a poker table, or roulette table.
(The minigame for poker/roulette will be provided to you, and the rest of the players prior to the event)

Security (0/3)

Even when the Casino is quieter than ever,
you're around, keeping the peace.

Sometimes the pit boss even lets you take part in the games.
Gotta keep you awake somehow, right?

----

Heist crew (0/4)

You, along with your crew, aim to win it big at Mardi Gras.
With a plan in mind, the layout of the casino memorised, and weapons ready, you're confident you'll be in-and-out before dawn breaks.
They say never bet against the house,
But this time, the odds are rigged in your favor.

Military (0/2)

You're using the nearby US Army Reserve Centre as a resting point, on your way back to your assigned base.
You, along with 20 other soldiers, are all armed and eager.

Notes

Question

'Hayden, why are you planning such a lame event?'
Answer
'Trust.'
I have a plan for this event, but full player enjoyment relies on you having no clue what to expect until the last minute.

----

If you're applying for the heist crew or Military, feel free to liase with other applicants so you already have some familiarity with each other.

Heist Crew will get early access to the map link so they can organise their route/plan on their own. Suggestions will be provided early.

Ultimately, there's no limitation on character relations. You can be a heist crew member who's a brother/sister to one of the casino staff or patrons for example.

If a lot of people end up applying for this event - I will add more roles.

Military characters are unlikely to show up until a bit has passed in the event. You can still watch the event via observer until you show up.

----

There's no date for when this event will run - but it'll run before the main server re-opens, likely early January.

This event will likely last for 4 hours, be ran over one day, and one map.

A Lonestar.
A provider.
A son.

I never understood it.
The way it just, happens to people.
I'm still a kid.

I woke up today; she didn't even recognize
my face.
Not my voice.
Nothing.

We're struggling as is, it's a hard thought taking care of my mother.
It got
worse, over the months.

Begley, our dog.
He
passed away last month, she doesn't remember his name.
She doesn't even remember me
being born.

The neighbors caught her at a shopping mall at three in the morning.
The police came by and dropped her off.
I can't stand watching her
slowly lose herself.

I don't have the cash to continue this life.
I can't work, I have to always watch her.

If the job goes wrong.. I can't
take care of her.
I need that money,
Josh.
I need that fucking money.

Lard Ass Larry, failed cop.

"I didn't pass the fitness test to become law enforcement, so I went for security instead. Don't get me wrong though, this shit is my life now. I gotta take it seriously, I got nothing left!"
- Larry Porter

Larry is an overweight security guard who works for the casino. He does what he can to work well. Though, with his low intelligence and high blood pressure, it ain't a lot.

Character backstory: [see below]

Do you know any other characters? (Feel free to OOCly liase with other applicants): Mostly everyone in my employment - security, dealers, some of the regulars more than likely. Maybe not by full names, but nicknames for sure. More than likely some others outside of the casino, given the backstory, but that's up to the narrative.

"What, you don't trust me? You think I cheat at my own game? Fine, we can see who's cheating here. You win, you get half my gold in the back. I win... and that fancy-ass jacket is mine. Just remember, pelotudo..."

"...la casa siempre gana."

Francisco Espinoza, Chilean-American Pit Boss

Francisco is a man born into a middle-class immigrant family in Phoenix, Arizona in 1962. Born by blood, he was the first of his family to be an American citizen and had a bright future ahead. For reasons unknown at the time, his father had a few bad interactions in his local area that forced the family to move three times before Francisco graduated high school, finally landing in Pennsylvania after moving across the country. Now, used to keeping friends for no longer than a few years at most, the former child was college-bound. Despite the efforts of his father, Francisco began to follow in his father's footsteps.

The twenty-year old finally moved out of his poor neighborhood in Southwestern Pennsylvania to study on-campus at the University of West Virginia in Economics. Unfortunately, his last name had a legacy he was unaware of - his father made the excuse of moving as a "military action", given the Vietnam War's continuation at the time. During the first winter break of his freshman year of college, a group of Hispanic men approached him, weapons in-hand, and made him an offer.

The men revealed themselves to be a part of a cartel south of the border. At gunpoint, they told the kid that he could either pay back the debt that his father owed by becoming a cocaine smuggler for a new East Coast trade route or be shot on-site alongside his parents. To sweeten the deal, they offered to pay off his tuition if he finished college - that of which he did - while performing their deal.

With no realistic alternative, the man shook the hand of the devil's advocate.

Years passed, and the man grew old. With age came knowledge, and with knowledge accompanied skill. Francisco, surprising the Dons, was eventually driven down to the cartel's East Coast headquarters in Virginia. Eye-to-eye, he met the man that threatened his family nearly a decade ago. After a long conversation, the Don offered him a job. Francisco had an extensive know-how on running a business despite having none to his name; the offer was to take over a casino down in southern West Virginia and run it with near-absolute power. Of course, it was a cover for the cartel trade, but the money was real, too.

Now, just under two decades later, Francisco runs a multi-million dollar casino with connections up and down I-64. Money flows in, cocaine flows out. The river has never been more rich than now, in early 2004, and profits are at an all-time high.

However long that cartel payroll cycles is uncertain, but the pit boss' luck could soon be waning.

Hernan Ortizi

1736374828474.png
Public Safety Officer, H. Ortizi, around 2-3 years ago, when working at a Citizens Bank of West Virginia. Picture taken by a unknown photographer.

Chosen role: Security
Character name: Hernan Ortizi
Character backstory: Hernan, is a 30 year old man of Spanish descent, whose parents originally came from Spain, and immigrated to the United States, before his birth. At first, struggling to get by, especially with his birth, his family managed to setup nicely with jobs and education, including his own.

Currently, Hernan has been to and graduaded at Security Guard school in West Virginia. Since then, he's been taking multiple positions at many places (including CBoWV), but now he works at the Mardi Gras Casino. Spending most of the time slowly walking by the gamblers, multiple dealers and other places, looking for anything... But, nothing ever happening.

Maybe something may change? Who knows.

Squeegee.png

"Heheh- read 'em. Two-pair, Jack-Seven- what!? A fuckin' flush-!?"

Chosen role: Gambler
Character name: Michael 'Squeegee' O'Hanrahan
Character backstory: A rich-bitch kid who everybody is pretty sure is related to a high-ranking fella of the Irish Mob, but that could just be a table story. He bets big, yells big, and pretty-damn frequently loses big.

While he's overall... rather unpleasant when it comes to his effect on the casino's atmosphere, he's a reliable source of income, and the fact he tips Dealers (ostensibly to give him 'an edge,' but all the same it's a good bit of extra pay) is enough to keep him reliably around.

After particularly big losses, he'll often vanish for days, weeks, at times a few months, but something about the Mardi Gras seems to have his attention. Some think it's the steakhouse nearby, others think his family owns the place (via proxies, mafia, yadda yadda, you know how rumourmongering goes), while others think his pappy's banned him from Vegas because he'd lose damn-near everything at an even faster speed than he already is.

The nickname, naturally, comes from how he gets rinsed for all he's got with alarming regularity. Maybe somebody should tell him to play Blackjack, where his tells are less relevant.

Do you know any other characters? (Feel free to OOCly liase with other applicants): They likely know him through raw noise, perhaps reputation. He, meanwhile, can likely recognize some of those more common residents of the casino- guards (often chastising him), Dealer he likes, etcetra.

A 26 year-old dealer at the casino.

Definitely not one of the wealthiest individuals, but he certainly isn't poor.

Very kind and friendly personality most of the times.

1736519502847.png
An older photograph taken by his friend.

His past was, well... "normal." He completed his studies after graduating high school. Never in his life did he take part in any illegal activities or anything questionable.

He has parted ways with his parents shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday.
He still visits them sometimes however.

At first, he was trying to find mostly part-time jobs, but lets face it, majority of them didnt pay well.

Currently he is trying to make at least some money to his name, and a job as a dealer suits him,
or at least he thinks so.

Not permanent though, as soon as he gets enough money, he is out of there.
He thinks he should be able to get more respected job, whatever that should be.
Is that true however? eh ...maybe someday.

He didnt talk to the other personnel much. Not that he doesnt like them or anything, he just isnt interested in making "friends" there.
