Having recently returned to Willard I took to reading the plethora of entries in the world map, as well as some other additional entries of lore, and it made me curious, what do others think of it? What do you like the most? What do you dislike? Wondering if I can find a common theme there.

I like the fact that the world map updates it's entries on the events that we do - Making it have some sort of relevance to the lore of the world.

I don’t like that a picture of my house with me in front of it, address and all, is on the world map. Makes me uncomfortable.

There are some interesting stuff. A lot more stuff now actually than before. New sites and locations. Recent events and old ones. Pretty interesting reads. I do see some plot holes in some of them or sometimes just asspulled things that act like a thorn to my side. Other than that, I enjoy most of it. Especially the Echelon facilities, Industrial sector, with their little summary.

I like most of it, it paints a pretty unique picture of the Combine occupation not being as effective as canon, where the Combine’s rule is near-absolute, the world map has multiple cities that have been destroyed, the one I think is the best example of what I mean is City 2, which has literally “Gone Rogue”. Granted I feel realistically the combine would probably pull an episode 2 the moment something like that happened, it’s still very cool, especially since I’m pretty sure it was an event done in game (though sadly I wasn’t around for it).

the world map is horrible because it doesnt have the Crack City, without crack city literally no one can enjoy willard

The cities and their player administrators are probably the lore's most interesting selling point.
My pet peeve with it is how much of it is written about rebel factions which are basically continental powers and are clearly written by their authors with this misconception that resistance in hl2 is fought like something out of WW2. The soviet larpers being the best example of this: lore describes them like they've been fighting a frontline war against the combine for more than a year now, yet nothing is written about how they get their resources/ how they manage to make theirs a sustainable conflict.
If the current developments at least fix the LFC and their arctic fleet shenanigans, that's a step in the right direction.

The best part tends to just be the expanded aspects that make sense within the Half Life sphere. There are plenty of good ideas on the world map. This is a massively expanded take on HL which is nice. I really do prefer everyone to have a common slate where characters truly originate from somewhere solid, and may have even shared some experiences in the distant past. I like the timeline as well, what with xen lasting for a little bit, but not too long as to imply humanity just got beaten by the Combine as a default. The map setup is of course really good too, by far the best way something like this possibly could be presented.

Of course, there's lots of other smaller things that you could compliment, but the list would be long and arbitrary, sticking to general things here.

The other good thing about the world is that its base is good enough that it never really loses its potential. No matter the state of the narrative or world, there is always a chance that it can be corrected and brought back to a more positive trajectory. It really is the finer base lore out there, and while it is unmistakably fan-fiction, its base qualifies as being a mostly good fan-fiction.

However, the bad is generally more prominent at this stage of the lore in my opinion, despite that potential.

The Combine are portrayed as being so weak that they more often just feel equivalent to a basic human power that is faltering far more than they do represent anything close to the Combine you see in Half Life. Willard has largely sucked the alien wonder and unrelenting awe from the Combine and replaced it with Oceania, except its much weaker and not trying to make much of a point. Most of the time anything happens with the Combine, its them fucking up something major since 'they are just stupid bugs from space' At this rate, Freeman will be little more than a formality.

On the flip-side, rebels tend to be the absolute worst aspect of Willards lore, partially due to the above. Aside from that, most rebel groups are awfully written, simply put. A large majority being half-baked poorly researched generalizations of whatever region they come from. Russia, for example, has a literal WW2 style Red-Army within it that fights for the glory of communism. Beyond that, the Patriots are just US marines seeking oil to blow the Combine up with and the former HMMLR were brits that only got angry enough to resist the Combine once they publicly executed the queen. Let us never forget the LFC's fucking naval armada either, something that had to be fought tooth and nail to get rid of. Then of course there is the general problem of rebels being constantly able to go toe-to-toe with the Combine in open battle which is just so utterly deflating from a world perspective.

As for the general lore...I don't like how it doesn't so much evolve as it does just rapidly start and stop abruptly. Random sequences of improbable (or impossible) circumstances are pretty much the exclusive measure of Willards storytelling and it really, really takes me out of it. I could compare it to being in a tabletop game with a bad GM. The kind that really has made this large, complicated world and done it well, but just does not have the play-by-play knowledge to make it truly work. So the added complexity of the lore just makes the far simpler and less refined narrative look all the worse.

Bad: Loyalist conflicts, why would the Combine let all out war happen between cities but hammer down on anti-citizens???
Good: Entropy Zero reference in City 10

The fact that city 17 is comically surrounded by the beta Wasteland reference from all sides just enouch for it to not conflict with what you see in the game. Not to mention Varna is just such a weird place to put it. The willard lore is the only reason why i even know that town exists. Why would you build you're planetary capital in a town of only like 330k ?

Regarding beta stuff I’ve noticed alot of servers had concepts from it, willard is no exception. Off of top of my head the conscripts (OSF or MAA) are the biggest example but I wouldn’t be surprised if the air exchange was somewhere, HL2RP servers love that place for some reason.

Apparently HLA uses Varna's layout as a base for the cool c17 display animation in the loading cutscenes, so they decided that was reason enough to say City 17 was Varna, instead of the mish mash of every eastern European city that it is in reality. Still better than placing it on Kiev like every other community, though.

"In the barren Arctic Circle, the L.F.C has repurposed a small radio tower to fit their needs. The communications tower itself was part of an older research base from the area. The tower has an extremely long range and is also fitted with radar equipment. It's nearly always manned out of necessity though usually with a small auxiliary force.

The tower has also served as an important warning system for the L.F.C base. It can detect incoming ground, naval, and air forces from upwards of 600 miles when it's operating at peak efficiency and the weather conditions are right.

In July of 2018, following the L.F.C's destruction of the nearby O.S.F base, the tower was refitted and upgraded with the Combine technology taken from the base, boosting its range from an effectiveness of 300 miles to 600 miles."

Althouch there they do kind of Conflict themselves on that theory since Varna has no metro while in Alyx you do infact explore a metro.

one thing i hate about willard rebels: they always manage to hold out.. (defo not plot armour) from the mass shelling and bombing

City 17 is in Sofia, Bulgaria.
