Long time no see.

The recent PK of Xiao has opened up a small little conversation in Discord on the topic of the "PK by default" rules in regard to Tier-6s and CCA. I know a good few people had doubts about it before, but it was Xiao's demise that proved some these worries true. There were a few things thrown around here and here, so I decided it might as well be compiled into a forum post, since I personally dislike the rule a good bit.

For those unaware:

In short, if you're a Tier-6 or CCA, you can be PK'd at any point without a reason. There has to be no history between you and the killer, and neither do they even have to know who you are. If you have a White or Purple band, you're free game. In short, it allows for hits with no consequential benefits at the detriment of the receiving party. There is little to no consequence of such an action, since most of the time a player can just make a new character with the same rank (for CCA), and those that can't just lose the result of their long IC work for essentially no good reason.

Simply make Tier-6s and CCA follow the same rules as normal PKs do, only a bit more relaxed. The killer doesn't have to know them personally, just have a reason to PK them based on their actions. There must be at least a tangible reason why you would risk your life to kill someone you don't know. It doesn't have to be contrived, but it has to be there. Otherwise you get Xiao's situation where one loses months' worth of progress to a person who probably didn't even know who he was.

Naturally, all of this excludes overly important people, like CAs or Sectorial Characters. At that point, it really does become a case of hurting the Combine.

That's it, pretty much. Bye-bye.

Effective immediately, T-6 characters are no longer considered PK by default.

We’re exploring more potential changes to the policy coming soon, including potential temporary immunity given to positions like the Chairperson, whose position demands interaction with the populace - something that can not happen if they’re shot each time they do.

We’re also going to be changing who qualifies as CCA, in order to prevent purple-name bloat and restoring the role’s status to only be given to the absolute most important characters, and not some random subfaction’s Vice Director, for instance.

I suppose the complaint can be closed then, although I do have one mild thing to add.

I get that PK Appeals take a while and information needs to be collected and sorted out. One can't exactly be expected to dig through logs the moment someone gets PK'd to figure out whether it was legit or not, but can we at least give some leniency when it comes to the consequences following them?

At least ask the person if they're going to appeal before putting "THIS CHARACTER IS DEAD." This keeps happening every single time, and I don't see why you can't just put "Administration member assassinated" without specifying, as if the idea that the person can appeal is too incomprehensible.

Plus, it seems like every time someone important gets PK'd, everyone always jumps to something reactionary without thinking that the person can appeal. Again, I get that waiting for the thing to settle before lashing out IC consequences isn't ideal, but it's just annoying when the Combine pull the "X is dead, time to rumble" switch without assuming that said character can get unPK'd and the whole thing can get voided.

If they are unPK'ed ICly the action still happens, it is just replaced with another member of administration.
Anyway, locked thread.
