Suggestion Cooking needs to be improved.

Working on a small cooking update for this. Will be a while before you see the knife change, but will come with other small crafting changes for cooking items.

I hope we get to use sticks to make Leech Skewers and Headcrab Skewers!
A useful purpose for a useless item.
I would very much like to see the Leech Skewers require a stick or two, but in turn no knife(unless you're taking into account digestives and teeth and such), whereas larger meats such as Antlion and Headcrab do require the use of a knife and sticks.
I look forwards to whatever comes.

I just wanna add, I also would like to see sharpened cooking knife, usable for cooking recipes. I don't think it currently is... At all.

Also, again, like I said buncha times, issue is, just lack of ingredients. And because no store holds Stocks, or actually keeps stuff, you then wait for them to reach dispensers.

So yeah, it's lack of ingredients issue

I'd like to point out that this suggestion is focused on improving the cooking mechanics and wasn't aimed at the removal of eating raw foods.

From my understanding, adhesive has been removed from the recipe to create a kitchen knife, meaning that it will now be easier to make skewered meat. I hope this change helps things and that we start seeing food be realistically prepared more often. (we dont really have a choice now either since raw eating is gone)
You still need adhesive

I had some ideas in mind and wanted to take a different approach to cooking:

Meals could be cooked manually (though I’m still undecided on this).
For example: you would go to the stove, place your pan or pot, add oil or water, put in your ingredients, and then wait for them to cook.

Another idea is stewmaking: adding different ingredients into a pot with boiling water to make soup. The bonuses and yields would depend on the ingredients used, offering a wide range of possibilities.

Maybe even pizzas?

I don’t have too many ideas right now, and this system would require other things to support it. I’m not entirely opposed to the crafting menu since it simplifies the process and offers shortcuts for quick stat checks. Without these shortcuts, going through a long process for every meal could become tedious. I also don’t see a huge appeal for cooking itself, although I have tried implementing farming in the past, but that system had its own flaws, and I noticed that not many players engaged with it.

I’d love to hear what my cooks out there think! 😉

would love to see gruel rp tho feels like that is a huge miss rn

Your idea is absolutely amazig. I was thinking about a very similar system that you proposed all the way back in i24.

This is probably VERY tedious to code in, but bear with me for a second. Let me cook, as one would say. I think everyone should be able to cook everything, but not everyone should make the same qualitative meals.

A skilled cook with fifty levels, should be able to make some bread that gives you three strength.
An inexperienced cook with 0-10 levels in cooking, should only be able to make bread that satiates your hunger. No bonuses.

Applying this logic to all items, it'd essentially mean that there'd be five categories of cooks, each of them with its own quirks.

Beginner cook. (Between level 1 and level 10. Food items give no attribute bonuses)
Intermediate cook. (Between level 10 and 20. Some food items give an incredibly small bonus, but nothing significant)
Experienced cook (Between leveel 20 and 30. All food items give a small bonus, but nothing significant)
Chef (Between level 30 and 40. Some food items give a signficant boost, with the rest giving a moderate one)
Masterchef (Between level 40 and 50. ALL food items give you a signficant attribute boost, regardless of what you cook)

This'd also mean that ALL food items on the server would require to be coded separately. I'm not sure how feasible this is, but I'd love to see this happen. Cooking is one of the skills that I always try to keep high. Aside from its invaluable role, it always bring people together. These are just my two cents, I'm not a coder, and I don't really have a clue if this is really possible to implement. I'm sure a part of the players would love this however.

My personal take is that the ingredients should be craftable on their own rather than having the entire cooking item list monopolised to the CWU.

Eh, I think it wouldn't be that easy to do, but I can see ways you could do it.

For instance, herbs and spices could be harvested from grass or plants around the map, You could add "fat" from FoS into a drop from animals you can "butcher" and then you could turn it into margarine in the oven / frying pan. But Idk about other options.

Also I agree with @gb_ is that making soups / gruel / goulashes / solyankas should be possible. In theory, throwing random shit into a pot, and working with it, would make it a soup, or some edible mush. It'd be pain to code, but it could work

mfer how do you craft flour, vinegar, dried herbs?

It requires the addition of so many items, and then their recipes in surplus.

To me, it sounds like a lot of dev work, but more than that, it'll generate insane amounts of bloat.

tbh, Vinegar is just fermented Alcohol, and Herbs could be collected from grass / plants akin. to trash.

But flour? Yeah, that's not possible.

Could make wheat a plant.

Vinegar could be a mixture of chemicals with fruits.

Dried herbs could also be made craftable with fruits.

This grants functionality to the farming system beyond grinding cooking rp and good food items.

It is a lot of dev work, but it would help massively with sustainability.

They also don't need to make every single food ingredient, some things like an artifical cheese slice and milk would be very hard to get.

Anyhow, this is just a general idea to add to this suggestion.

Couldn't stuff from FoS in theory be used?

Cooking system actually got worse, less variety now than in i24...

Maybe variety isn't the goal here, but I'd like to see more food stuffs like pizza, burrito, maybe a chicken burger with chipotle sauce, added.....
