Born and raised in Tây Nguyên, the Western Highlands of Vietnam, in the village of Đông Sông, Dai Chen's life was deeply influenced by the Vietnam War. Despite being in the southern part of the country, his village came under Viet Cong influence, shaping his early perceptions of the conflict. His grandfather, who had endured the era of French Imperialism, saw fighting against American forces as a necessary path to peace and sovereignty for Vietnam. Though not a supporter of communism, he viewed it as the only viable option to achieve peace.

During his teenage years, Dai Chen engaged in guerrilla warfare against the South Vietnamese and American forces, he planted mines, planned ambushes. Surviving the war, he fled to Taiwan just before Saigon's fall, joining the significant Vietnamese communities there. These communities were important in the broader context of countering communist expansion in Asia. In Taiwan, Dai Chen was haunted by the thought of his contributions to the war, especially considering the fate of those South Vietnamese sent to re-education camps, and he grappled with a profound sense of responsibility for their suffering.

Presently residing in Industrial Zone 24, Dai Chen, now a man in the prime of his later years, carries the lessons of his past into the present. The echoes of his youthful engagements and the reflective years that followed have subtly shaped his outlook. With the wisdom that comes from decades of experience, he navigates his days with a nuanced understanding of his actions and their consequences.
