Let me read a letter I recently received... "Dear Rebels. How about you try doing something that actually harms the Combine without murdering innocent citizens? Sincerely, An Upset Slummer."
Thank you for writing, Upset Slummer. Of course, your question touches on one of the most basic guerilla tactics, with all its associated hopes and fears for the future of the rebellion. I also detect some unspoken questions. Do the rebels really know what's best for us? What gives them the right to make this kind of decision? Will they ever stop hoarding guns and give us food?
Allow me to address the anxieties underlying your concerns, rather than try to answer every possible question you might have left unvoiced. First, let us consider the fact that for the first time ever, as a downtrodden collective, denting the Combine is within our reach. This simple fact has far-reaching implications. It requires radical rethinking and revision of our struggles. It also requires planning and forethought that run in direct opposition to our esteemed passiveness.
I find it helpful at times like these to remind myself that our true enemy is the Administration. They threw rocks at us and kept us locked in the slums all these hardscrabble years when we hardened our axes and cooked our first headcrab meals above a meager fire and startled at the shadows that leapt upon the apartment block's walls. But inseparable from Administration is their dark twin, the Loyalists. The Loyalists are inextricably bound to unreasoning hatred, and today we clearly see their true nature. They have just become aware of their irrelevance, and like a cornered beast, they will not go down without a bloody fight. They would like inflict a fatal injury on our kind. They create their own oppressors, and bide us cower against them. The Administration would tell us that the unknown is a threat, rather than an opportunity. They slyly and covertly compel us away from change and progress. The Administration, and loyalists, therefore, must be expunged. They must be fought tooth and nail, beginning with the basest of human urges: The urge to harm.
We should thank our rebels for giving us respite from this overpowering force of blind loyalism. They have thrown a switch and exorcised our enemies in a single stroke. They have given us the strength we never could have summoned to overcome this incursion. They have given us purpose. They have turned our eyes away from the Administration.
Let me assure you that the food will be given out on the day that we have mastered ourselves...the day we can prove we need it. And that day of transformation, I have it on good authority, is close at hand.
