I agree, though keeping the respectful vs the hateful balanced in a 30:70 split would be better than getting antagonized daily. Too much of either can get really exhausting really quickly, so having it be interspersed with respect and humanity vs hate and vitrial in somewhat equal measure is a good thing.

everyone wants oppression until they're the one being oppressed
Honestly, as a vortigaunt player, I don't think I should literally be harassed in the streets daily but I think that what is possible is an equal balance of hate and respect so that the environment is consistently varied.

Let's start by oppressing the biotics more instead of somehow treating them with more respect and dignity than the actual citizens.
I'm tired of seeing people getting punished for being racist to vorts, or seeing CPs take a vortigaunt's side over a human's.

Or the other day when BOE wanted people to write articles for a workshift, two biotics were in line and allowed to come in. Aliens writing an English article for a newspaper. Nobody even thinks about discriminating against vorts. Just makes sense that if these alien serviles are supposedly kept alive because they are slaves, they should be treated like slaves. Right now they are somehow more respected than the average person.

That's not a failure on my part.

Its literally written into the Biotic Workforce Mandate and Biotic Cohesion System that they have the inferred permission to do that but they don't.

How oppressive should Willard's tone be?

Interesting question, and one that isn't really easy to answer. Let's run down exactly what "oppression" means in this case.

Oppression: [n],
Prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority.

So, when asking how "Oppressive" we want the tone of the server to be, what are we actually asking for? Are we asking for the IC systems to be more unjust, for cruelty to be more apparent? At the end of the day, it's important to understand the trade-off between fun and "tone". Many aspects of a dystopia are waived on the server for the simple aspect of "doing this is just frustrating." Reference the food crisis and drop in playercount for proof.

Most people so far have advocated for a more oppressive tone within roleplay, and that's great, good to hear. How will it be achieved? Some concrete ideas instead of "general opinion thread no. 34252" would serve to make some change actually happen.

Perhaps CPs should be more scrutinized in terms of their interaction with citizens? They may come off as too friendly, and so should limit that, even if it would limit CP/Citizen interaction somewhat. Is that a worthwhile tradeoff?

Citizens, so far, are allowed to roam freely with no limits in designated areas. Good for interaction, bad for "oppression". Should we work to restrict citizen movement more, through increased inspections, curfews, etc? We already know inspections are boring as fuck, yet they're undoubtably oppressive. So which way do we want to go?

City 24's big thing is that it's a loyalist city. Should this aspect be leant into? More speeches/rallies, more interaction between the CCA and higher loyalist party to the lower loyalist party/regular citizens? It could be good, but the loyalist system at the moment is flawed, and very unengaging at it's entry point.

Rebels are a part of this too. Should they be romantic freedom fighters, or just people with guns? Should there even be rebels, or should any semblance of resistance be covert, little things?

The map is also a big part of this, and people have their issues with it. Should the slums and city proper be so separate? Should we have it so the rebels have their own little "mini-outlands" to roam, with CPs only really going in to cause trouble. In fact, that aspect is a big oppressive part, and is endlessly complained about. How oppressive is too oppresive? Should rebels have any areas to breathe in?

There are a lot of factors to setting the tone of a server, everything works in tandem with everything else to set the mood for when someone steps off the train for the first time. Behind the scenes stuff is as important as how people act in roleplay. And that's where my main gripe lies. C24 is perfectly serviceable as an oppressive environment yet I commonly see players not really leaning into it. A lot of the time, people seem to forget they're in a dystopia, and that effect scales with itself until few people actually take it seriously. It falls to everyone to contribute to setting the tone. Not just external factors. You have to be oppressed for things to be oppressive.

Im perfectly ok with the way things currently are in terms of ''opression''... ONCE AGAIN... I BRING THE POINT... THIS EXACT THREAD WAS MADE TWICE ALREADY AND THIS IS THE THIRD TIME

Also for the vort comment? The biotic reform is already opressive enough, as in the sense of how anti-player it is. What opression does? It stiffles RP, as of right now things are JUST FINE, I am happy to see CP's have conversations with citizens if they so desire, if anything I ENCOURAGE THEM TO, otherwise they'll just be this entirely private RP circlejerk just like the one that happened in rebel metabases in i17, which added NOTHING to cityRP.

Im happy with the way vorts are treated seeing as I don't RP a vort because I want to be treated like a slave? Like that is actually hilarious someone suggested that, why would I even think to play a vort if I was constantly stiffled from trying to do anything cool with my char and constantly ordered around like a slave? Did it never cross anyone's mind that just isn't fun to RP?

I play a vort for the unique interactions I can bring to a scenario by being an alien character, things such as NOT BEING ALLOWED TO SPEAK ABOUT MATTERS THAT DONT RELATE TO WORK UNLESS IM TIER 1 AKA NOT BEING ALLOWED TO RP IN THE RP SERVER... is already Anti-player ''opressive'' enough.

"Oppress them more!" cry the players who don't play Biotics.

Being dragged out of RP or getting RP taken away from you as a Biotic is terrible. Its no wonder nobody wants to constantly push that on what few Biotic players flag up post-reform.

And, as has been stated, WN's oppressive era was a dramatic failure that almost killed the server dead. You do not want a return to that. It sounds good on paper but gets very boring to play under.

I agree. But what I propose is a sort of 50:50 or 70:30 atmosphere of friendly and oppressive

Said the CP assistant assistant lead (Still CP player)
everyone wants oppression until they're the one being oppressed
Let's just leave it at this and be done with it... This thread will derail into a toxic and unproductive debate very soon like the other 2 and once again nothing whatoever will be achieved... This'll be my last post on this thread as I don't want to contribute more to that than I already did, seeing as just the fact I spoke in the first place already contributed.
I've said my piece, I'll see myself out now

tl:dr because I am lazy

more oppression. willard is to light. but when I say I want a darker setting and dystopia, I don’t mean fucking lockdowns and 1974. I mean get rid of gag characters, change the setting, and generally make it more interesting

This is impossible to balance out. Every player is an individual and the majority will have no connection and/or recollection of when and how much you've been oppressed/hated. It's not feasible to scale.
