DO NOT
staff for Willard Networks
an essay
PRELUDE

This piece of factual information was created within the realm of 2009, a time when administrators were a pretty hot topic. They were rule enforcers, peacekeepers, and law-abiding individuals who stood by the books and ruled them with an iron fist. Their whole job was, and still is to this day, to protect the community and make sure that its members are behaving properly. The job of an administrator, or "admin", is a voluntary position taken by members of the community who want to uptake this responsibility and put the community over their shoulders, assisting it in any way that they possibly could. However, if we look deeper beneath the surface, we can see that the role of an administrator holds a lot of power in order for these standards to be met upon its community members. What happens when this power is subsequently abused? What if people took their jobs too seriously, forgetting that this is a position on the internet meant to be a safeguard from genuine harmful individuals and taking their 'job' too seriously?
Fast forward to now, the Garry's Mod roleplay community is insane. Willard Networks is innovative, creative, and breaks the boundaries of what could be done with enough materials and resources to build up a following for a new sub-genre within roleplay. The creation of 'Serious Roleplay' was already embedded into Garry's Mod by the time Willard rolled around, though there have been projects just like WN dedicated to make it more serious than ever. Voice Chat, a beloved feature integral to the game itself and one of the many reasons why people have fun on the game, would end up being removed and ultimately replaced by the in-game chatting feature. In 2022, Willard Networks is the most popular serious RP server in all of Garry's Mod of which utilizes Helix to its advantage in order to bring itself into that status. This section is important just to bring you up to speed on Willard Networks in general and the role of a staff member, in case you've forgotten by now.
WILLARD STAFF
ANNOYANCE AND STUBBORNNESS
The reputation of Willard staff is very divisive amongst its community. There are some, including newer players or those who don't really involve themselves in the deeper affairs of the staff team, believe that the team itself and its members are all those who wish to help the community to the best of their ability and keep the quality to a maximum extent. Furthermore, there are some (who will be mentioned later in this essay) who believe that the staff team are biased power-tripping abusers who only help the community whenever they feel like it. In my very own honest opinion, it comes both ways. One of the key reasons why some people have a distain toward the staff team in particular is due to their overall annoyance when it comes to the enforcement of rules and stubbornness when it comes to the way that they act.
Let's look at one of the staff members in particular of which most have spoken to me about and have a huge dislike toward. Neonity is a former Senior Administrator and Mentor, now Short Stories Senior Eventmaster and Trial Administrator. Through my interactions with her, she was a pretty kind and shitposty person who just wanted to have fun like everyone else. I never really had an issue with Neonity... until she returned to the staff team. Her behavior continues to stay the same to this day, and she is very adamant when it comes to enforcing the rules. Well, that's great! Right? Well, yes and no. Many in the Garry's Mod roleplay community have suffered abuse from genuinely corrupt staff in the past, what with DarkRP, StarWarsRP, HogwartsRP, etc. The reason why the staff team is dislikable is mainly due to the way that they act and how they enforce the rules.

<-- This was the image that Neonity was peeved over and thought it was "trying to incite the same drama again"
Gotta love the professionalism. This was directed toward grass man as he was speaking like a moron as he usually does, but for an admin who loves to enforce the rules I didn't know his shenanigans would warrant this response.

Context matters, so I'll give Neonity the benefit of the doubt. Saint Jiub was actually being a bit of a dumbass and somehow either bypassed his timeout or got un-timed out by a member of the staff team. Neonity decided to respond... unprofessionally, as usual to the situation. I get someone like Jiub is genuinely annoying, but once again... for an admin who loves to keep things serious and up to code, professionalism is out of the equation.

Now, this is Neonity when an event known as 'Plumber Mario' was brought up, of which Neonity is noticably different than the other times she verbally talked down to someone. Now she's acting professionally and doing the opposite of what I mentioned in the previous screenshots.
Neonity is not the only staff member who acts like this, far from it actually. I won't get into too much detail, but for some reason staff members like Vinyl for example love to yell at Creative Team and assert power over them. Normally, they'd only do that if Creative Team actually broke the rules when doing their jobs on the main server, though it was the complete opposite. The situation itself can't be explained further as it took place in private CT chats, but I will say that Vinyl and other staff members have this compulsiveness to try and assert dominance over people they assume they have power and authority over. The Creative Team is meant to be something to the likes of the staff team, producing quality events and roleplay for those to engage in, so there's no need to try and create an imbalance by barking orders at team members when it's not your responsibility to inquire about it.
Back when I moderated for a pretty popular DarkRP server, Icefuse.net, the staff team like any other DarkRP server was completely and utterly hated by its playerbase. Essentially, in a DarkRP server, your main punching bag is the administration. I can see why people dislike the staff team in servers like these, people expect a huge amount of player agency when first playing on the server and don't like it when their fun is ruined by a floating Combine Elite with a physgun. But, at the same time, rules need to be enforced. When I was a Trial Moderator for Icefuse, I was very casual and laid-back when it came to enforcing the rules and doing my job. I didn't speak like a robot and spoke like someone who was in their shoes, understanding and complacent. I was considered the best Trial Moderator in Icefuse due to my understanding tone and nature, I'm just there for the community and want everyone to have as much fun as possible while keeping out the genuinely nasty people from the community. Over time, however, I did end up disliking my position in the team as everything was way too organized for my liking, everything had its own discord server including staff branches, and the server still used Teamspeak for staff communication even with the presence of Discord. Now comes my presence in semi-serious to serious roleplay servers like BMRP and Willard Networks, of which both I end up having problems with at the end of the day.
Throughout my time as Creative Team and temporarily the SS Co-Manager, I can see why several staff members had left to begin with. You have a lot of responsibilities and you have to take your job seriously, maybe even too seriously from time to time when enforcing the rules. That's why whenever people like Neonity are enforcing the rules out loud, it makes me think they're reading a script or forcing themselves to say these things in order to make themselves look better. No one likes it when the staff team tries too hard, we just want to have fun and let the staff team have fun as well. I have clashed with several staff members in regards to what I have done so far as my position in the Creative Team, of which has lead to several consequences such as my removal as SS Co-Manager and temporary ban on the main server.

In conclusion, the server is divided into two kinds of people. Those who, if you'll excuse my French, suck the dicks of admins and those who dislike them for the way that they act on the server. Just because this is a serious roleplay server doesn't mean you have to emphasize it 24/7, and there is room for people to have fun from time to time without acting out in realism. There have been serious roleplay servers that I have played in the past of which were in a similar quality and fashion to Willard Networks, however no one was punished or moderated because of the way their character acted in-game. I can recount a LOT of scenarios where a bunch of people are acting out-of-character and saying random ass things that don't actually pertain to the 'serious roleplay' nature of the server, though instead of being scrutinized for it they are worshipped over it in the style of memes. There is a literal forum thread dedicated to screenshots of these people and these situations that I am referring to, but no. I get in trouble for a supposed pop-culture reference to a certain Italian plumber, yet people can inspire their characters off of real life famous Hollywood stars, such as Christian Bale.

THE PLAYERBASE
Something that everyone within the staff and Creative Team seemingly struggle with is the playerbase itself. For example, Sachimii recently left the staff team for Willard Networks and decided to make a decent forum post on Willard Networks in general, displaying her criticisms over the server. I've already explained the current flaws of the staff team and things that could slip through the cracks, but one thing that she mentioned which caught my eye was when she talked about the playerbase. In her eyes, there was almost nothing wrong with Willard Networks in general besides the staff team... it was the player who was the problem. You are the problem.
This was said by a former staff member who was recently banned from everything Willard related due to their conduct after voluntarily leaving the team. She seemed genuinely distasteful of the playerbase and often attacked members within the discord server, of which was public and seen by pretty much anyone who looked at general chat for all of 15 seconds. As Omega once said to me, the most smartest thing that Neonity has done recently was ban Sachimii for her behavior. Another thing to take note of is that Sachimii was also a semi-disliked staff member of which people somewhat disliked but to a certain extent. Her true colors were put in full display when her power was taken away from her, imagine what it would've been like if she kept that power.
Anyway, Sachimii aside, there have been many other instances where CT and admins have complained about the playerbase being the overall problem of Willard Networks. Now, when they say that, they don't mean that the playerbase is the reason for why Willard is currently suffering in terms of quality. No, it has nothing to do with that. The reason why people in both of these teams complain about the community is because they have the responsibility to deal with you and HAVE to deal with you. The players of Willard Networks, in my honest opinion, are very divided. There are some, who have been banned recently, who are genuine dickheads and don't deserve to be in this community, some are just assholes without knowing it or they aren't up to par with roleplay quality, and there are some who are cool people that interact with others in a positive light very often.
When you are staff for Willard Networks, you have the responsibility to handle the community when it comes to it. As a Mentor, I had to deal with annoying people, annoying requests, etc. People have left the staff team because of the playerbase in general, if it's somewhat bad for Mentors imagine the staff team itself. Staff have left due to personal problems, Willard being one of the least of their issues when it comes to reality, but it's no denying that the community is sometimes the reason why their mentality is or has degraded. For example, dealing with the LFC is a genuine pain in the ass because they don't do anything, they don't have the active numbers to do anything, they have horrendous lore, and their members are people who don't know the very definition of roleplay yet we have to handle them when it comes to it. This is one of the many contributing factors as to why a good portion of the admin team has left Willard.

THE BIAS
Picking Favorites
It's human nature for you to have your own special picks or things that you dislike in a personal level, of which is referred to as your biases. An example of a 'bias' on something to this degree is picking favorites. Throughout the last couple of years it seems, the staff team has been internally struggling with their problems of bias of which some could even say is still prevalent to this day. The most notable kind of bias that is pretty much undeniable and is still talked about to this day is the staff team and the LFC, or any big rebel-like faction for that matter. For example, in the Under Red Skies megaevent, the rebel BMD faction primarily consisted of admins and was deemed an admin-only faction. This meant if you weren't a staff member, you weren't allowed to be with the cool kids. And because they were a rebel faction, they got the best gear in the entire event. Ballistic vests, helmets, AK-47s, OP gear, you name it they could've had it at their fingertips. The power of giving yourself items before an event occurs is pretty dandy, isn't it?
With that being said, bias is not something unusual or unheard of in an environment like Garry's Mod. There's always bound to be some form of bias, you can never really escape it or create a community that completely excludes it to the fullest extent. There's always going to be admin abusers and there's always going to be biased admins, especially in a server like Willard Networks where they hold so much power in the palm of their hand. Like I mentioned earlier, most of the actual confirmed bias comes from the staff team giving way too much to the LFC and getting way too little in return when it comes to improvement within the faction. This has been said before and I will say it myself, the way the faction is currently and has been throughout Willard's existence isn't the fault of the faction leads, especially Travis considering he's actually a good lead and admin. However, it seems as if nothing is being done against the faction in order to reform it and make sure that it improves itself for a general audience. Roleplaying against the LFC is like trying to fight a brick wall, either the staff is going to pick favorites and try to prevent as many casualties on the side of the LFC as possible or the LFC themselves are going to whine and complain when things don't go their way. Speaking of which... My theory as to why the LFC is spoiled rotten is due to staff bias. The LFC at this point is practically used to being the only child and getting what they want, and then when something bad happens that they didn't plan for, they start to whine and moan when things don't go their way. Staff really hate the fact that the LFC love to complain about everything bad that happens to them, yet it seems they're literally doing nothing to combat it either because they can't or because they won't. It seems the only people who can actually make a change to this is the Creative Team, LORD-RAD-X even bringing up the fact that the lore created by the LFC is dogshit and self-centered.
This is all confirmed bias and it is all going to a faction that isn't even as active on the server as it used to be. Staff has already proven that they like to pick favorites with factions, so what about people? For example, a friend of mine named @Omega was recently banned for "Offensive RP" and "Fail RP". What did he do exactly? Well, he walked up to me and a few Civil Protection officers while we were patrolling and asked us about PEMDAS. Then, he proceeded to make a funny sex joke acronym. He made his character turn on their heel and collapse on the ground, of which we were genuinely engaged in the roleplay because... there was nothing wrong with it. Other than his mention about PEMDAS and the sex joke acronym he made, it was just another encounter of a deranged man in the world of Willard Networks. Occurrences like this are heavily common in Willard and are even utilized as memes, yet those in said memes don't get in trouble and are instead idolized for the funny meme of the day that they had just conjured. Yet Omega gets banned for an entire week because of it. It didn't offend any of the officers involved, it wasn't offensive in anyway. It was Rabithunter who was offended, which lead him to ban Omega. If we knew that he was breaking a rule (which he wasn't), then we would have backed off and ignored him. But since it is a usual occurrence and it's practically normal on the server, we didn't think anything about it. Omega did end up getting a ban extension to early 2023 due to 9/11 jokes, of which that's his own fault. Though, this specific scenario of the PEMDAS joke is just baffling.

Yes, the joke was cheesy and it was corny. But it didn't warrant a full week ban.

'SERIOUS' ROLEPLAY
To be serious, or not to be serious...
We all know Willard Networks is a serious roleplay server, it’s the whole point of the server to begin with. If you’re tired of people not taking your RP as serious as you’d want it to, then WN is right up your alley. I have been playing serious roleplay servers for years now, Willard isn’t the first when it comes to the roster of other serious RP servers that I have played in and out of gmod. Even the most serious server imaginable on Garry’s Mod second to Willard has slight moments of fun embedded into it for people to goof off and mess around for a little bit, and Willard is no exception either as it seems. Memes and screenshots are still made and spread to this day of people who say or do certain things in the server and become the next meme of the day. I have mentioned this before already so I’m not going to sugarcoat it anymore.
Even in a serious roleplay server like Willard, there has to be some aspects of comedic elements in the server so people could have a laugh and have fun. Yes, the server mimics reality, but it isn’t reality. The whole point of video games and roleplay in general is meant to be an escape from reality, but how can you do that on Willard Networks? Recently, I’ve made an arch-nemesis character to Ron Goodfella where I am a complete opposite to him named ‘Dan Badchick’, said to have been the best thing that had happened since the map change as someone once told me. Dan Badchick was a comedic relief character who often spouted how evil he was and how he hated Ron Goodfella, at one point the actual character confronting me and interacting with me as if we had known each other in the past. Ron didn’t have an issue with this character being made and seemingly neither did some other staff members during the time of its creation. I have had the character for over a month and no one brought up the fact that I can’t roleplay as him. The issue was only brought up just today when ZeroPants warned me verbally to not roleplay as the character anymore. I oblige, and what do I get for obliging? A twenty-four hour ban. How generous.
Point is, I shouldn’t be warned and then banned over acting a certain way that tons of people have been acting for the past couple of years. If I’m going to get in trouble and scrutinized for something as low as this, then this should be applied to everyone in the community, not just myself.
This isn’t a jab at ZeroPants, he’s a cool guy. This is mostly a jab toward people like Garratz and Neonity, because apparently there’s no such thing as “fun” in Willard Networks as stated by Neonity herself.

Conclusion
I don’t want to make this too long of an essay to the point where people just won’t read it, but long enough for people to understand where I am coming from. Even with all of these problems that have been plaguing the community lately, I still want to be apart of it and help make it better. These problems can be easily fixed and it’s ultimately up to the staff team for them to sort out their own problems. With the way staff have been acting for a while now, it makes players such as myself change our mindsets for the worse rather than the better. We’re told that we literally can’t have fun on the server and there’s no room for comedic characters, this truly is a dystopian 1984 roleplay server and I am truly starting to see it now from an out of character perspective.
I am still going to play Willard even after heavily criticizing the staff team. I believe some of them are genuine morons who take their “job” seriously and needed a reality check that this is a Garry’s Mod server at the end of the day. It’s not the end of the world if someone makes a funny character to make people laugh or try to entertain people and have a fun little RP scenario. This doesn’t have anything to do with the Dan Badchick thing but for a different scenario that I’ve already argued with several people about and don’t want to touch on in this thread. Because bringing that back up again is like yelling at a brick wall for 24 hours straight.
This thread was made in the more “off-topic” discussion forum on purpose. I don’t want this to be the next big manifesto like what Sachimii did, but rather an OOC review of how the Willard Networks staff team continues to degrade itself. If you are ever to take a staffing position in Willard Networks, I and several other former staff members advise you either apply for Mentor or become a Creative Team member.
Draft Edit: I’ve recently been dogpiled by staff in my DMs, all of which telling me that I’ve been de-whitelisted from Civil Protection, removed from Creative Team, and the Mentor team due to “complaints”. I’ve been given a second chance at one point and have been generally improving, but it seems the staff team think otherwise. Being apart of staff is like being apart of the mafia, at any point they can just let you go for minuscule things that you do. The things I’ve done like Dan Badchick or Plumber Mario were only one time occurrences that everyone had fun with, I didn’t know that fun wasn’t allowed in a server like Willard Networks which seems to put an emphasis about it. I’ve been told I can reapply for all of my positions back when applications re-open, though at this point I can already tell that if I do re-apply I’ll either get automatically denied or put under a watchlist.I don’t want to make this too long of an essay to the point where people just won’t read it, but long enough for people to understand where I am coming from. I want to hear your genuine opinion on the current state of Willard Networks and its staff team, along with any general criticisms you may have either over me or anyone/anything mentioned on this post. I don’t mind if you think the staff team is good or if they’re bad, I just wanna have a nice discussion on the state of things here.
