They possess among them a certain youthful rebellion that is all too common among youngsters and newly blossoming adults that seems to inform of a clear insistence of the idea 'I am right, and everyone else is wrong'. With age and reformative action, I am sure we can correct this particular brand of noncomformity, just the same as was done with the American hippy movements of the seventies. Quite simply, they'll grow out of it eventually."

Those held in captivity are only somewhat more tolerable given their strange witchcraft has been muted by Our Benefactors."

Cortana Marielle Northbrook was born in Ontario, Canada, on September 8th, 1979. She was born to her parents, David and Francisca Northbrook as an only child at the time, though she was soon followed by two younger sisters who were born around a year later.

She was commended throughout her career as a student for having exceptional, rarely contested grade point averages. Upon graduating from her secondary school cume laude as valedictorian, she moved to the United States where she attained dual citizenship, with the goal in mind to attend Harvard University as a student of law.
Her attendance to the school was nearly interrupted in 2009 when the Combine invasion of Earth occurred. She along with many of her peers was forced to surrender to the invading occupiers.
Her formal distinctions and primary education in law with a high standard of quality placed her among the prime candidates for acceptance into the Civil Administration. She was considered an avid community leader and commendable figure applicable to represent the Union, and so she accepted the offer - the distinctly improved living conditions and rationing was more than enough for her.
Beyond the more than acceptable accommodations offered to her, over time she began to accept the Combine as the natural evolution of a species from earth bound to space faring. Her viewpoint was gradually cemented in loyalty to the Combine over time as she studied in her free hours to become a chief propaganda officer for the administration, specializing specifically in psychological manipulation and coercion due to her flourishing skills in those fields.
Though she has never had the opportunity to meet Doctor Breen in person, she was one of around 15 new inductees to the administration to be welcomed with a “personalized” greeting via a broadcast from the good Doctor (which in reality was simply a pre-recorded video offering a generic welcome to new administrators).
Though she tends to sympathize with the Combine and their general goals, she is still very fearful of failure entirely because she understands just how brutal they can be to those who do not succeed.
Presently she resides in City 13, awaiting a promotion to a more promising position within the Combine’s favor.
