"...I've survived muchView attachment 41503Standing upon a marked board, dotted with rough etches of the past, a young girl stared at a shining horizon. Commotion trampled the serenity of the blazing sky. Pulsing lights of blue-white stars cast behind impossibly rolling clouds. Thunder roared without rain to answer. Gentle kisses of wind passed her hair - remnant shockwaves from a continent away. Her foot slid passed a mark made on her sixth year, taking a step closer to that distant oblivion.
But lived little..."
Someone called her name, A father or a brother, deep voiced and shouting a mother-tongue she only knew at home. She ignored it, as several more flashes maintained her gaze. The sky-fire blazed, turning night to day for moments at a time. Enthralled by its lethal majesty, she stood her ground, ever the passive observer.
Hoarfrost lingered upon the ground, crystalline baubles that made the grass twinkle amidst the unknowable lights. It was the most miraculous thing she had ever seen. That she ever would see. She had witnessed the others, the portals on the Television. One was close enough to visualize the airflow, swirling about the gravitational drift. This, however, was the first she had ever felt. Sensed with each possible extension of her mind.
It was unclear what exactly it was, but the radio waves were gone. The Television was silent. Something could be heard, something otherworldly. Its clarion calls travelling with hurricane winds brought about by its arrival -- and the next. It instilled her with fear...and indifference. The world was ending, death was near, and she merely marveled at what she could not change. Until one hand...grabbed her own.

Minister Report
Subject: Transfer notice
Citizen: Bethany G. Marcum
For the consideration of the ministry of City 17, district 47. Enclosed is a detailed report upon one Bethany Marcum, currently on route to your esteemed city.
Arrived in City 8 at the age of 18 after two months of extended living in hazardous bio-zones. Her family, which consisted of her mother and father, were assigned to District 52 on the date of July 14th, 2004. Due to failings of the local Civil Protection forces, she was exposed to, or around, much anti-citizen corruption. An extensive review of her record shows no infractions or civil penalties, nor reason to believe she was interactive with subversive forces. Due to this we have deemed amputation unnecessary.
During the period of unrest, which as you may know, caused a collapse of the socio-stability of districts 48, 50, 51, 52 and 55, she served the union as an Emergency Medical Personnel. While conscripted to this role, it should be noted that despite lack of prior training or certification, she performed admirably; given the circumstances. She held this position for some time, but was never brought upon the local Medical Union with any officiality.
During the necrotic decimation of district 52 she survived and with the help of her father, CPF. I1 Sunrise-2, managed to escape along with her mother. Punishments were handed out to the local Civil Protection units, as a result of their failure to preserve the district's socio-stability. Loss of family cohesion; a minimum adjudication.
Recent encounters including an interrogation headed by one, CPF. I2 Sunrise-5, imply she appears to suffer a profound timidity with union authorities. This will be added to her dossier, as it could prove valuable later on. She has been separated from her family and should arrive within City 17, district 47 within one week. May you find use of her.
The union prevails.
Former Minister, Sugai Yoshiyuki
City 8, District 52.

I remember...
These first days, uncertainty clouding staggered moments. Those between masked with envy for days gone by. A cracked road is beneath my feet, peeling away like shingles in a snowstorm. A white haze shifts the world, binding it to mystery until -- grey. Everything is now grey. Bland, departed from color or vibrancy, as to not offend the shimmering horizon with glittered optimism. I'm no longer alone, shambling alongside a band of figures with borrowed faces. An old doll is discarded in the gutter, it flowers into a dozen more. We give up the fight, letting it fester among us. The filth now fills the cracks in the streets, the homes and the towers. One begins to rise above all others, colorless but for the tantalizing glimmer of stolen energy. Rising to impossible heights and surpassing them still. Wires are thrown across the city above me, catching on its structure, snapping taut. More than the sun, sky or clouds its an image that never fades, shadow ever present...
...The Citadel...
Calling as a war passes by in a blink, but never leaving. Aftershocks of a defeat miles away pound against us. I recall the clinic - the first of my time - light clamors in from a cratered ceiling, igniting the airborne dust. A chandelier of the sky. Featureless figures follow me to the shift again and once more, but never beyond, fading with time....
...eclipsed by...
Splotches of blood and bile, my own adding to the collage, until the fog of nausea clears. My days pass each over the other, undistinguished. A nameless friend morphs into something equally forgotten. I watch an ocean break, and all becomes dark and staggered. Shambling shadows hang at the edge of a half-vision, parasites of cruelty unmatched skitter across enflamed grounds. I move as if sundered by waves anew. I look at my mothers face. I pry a blight from it -- its never the same again. A man takes my hand, paternal to the touch. I look back one last time at....
...The smallest clinic in City Eight.
This rattling train across a moonlit night, each jolt sounding as a gunshot, a wasteland of half-finished sights and forgotten brambles. The train jolts to a stop and I am now elsewhere, coming up from the metro, a copper dawn, illuminated by a burning star casts thick shadows of the many pedestrians. I take a step, forget the rest, A Vortigaunt approaches through an endless dark, shuffling across vanished pavement. Each sight comes to greater focus, but many never unblur. I blink, a worn structure looming overtop my head, large crimson letters fastened to its edge. I read them; Jung Civil Hospital. They glow like radiant stars amidst the half-forgotten gloom. I step in, now wearing its uniform, total clarity abound. Closing my eyes, the faintest echo of...
...Cheery laughter...I open my eyes and its gone. Time has passed and left me behind, snatching the mirthful thoughts away. A barricade, constructed of sheet metal and darkened, alien steel, both. I stand well beyond, feeling the weight of the loaded weapon at my side. Something bursts. Again and again. A masked unit huddles behind a disintegrating shadow. I touch the metallic grip -- it is already raised -- I reach for the trigger -- the bullets have already left. The cacophony ceases. I stand there, a weapon braced, basking in silence...
...Drowned by...By shades of noise. Things burst, vague in their dreamy recreation. I jolt, hands deep in the bowels of the faceless. Screams. Vocoders burst. A horde of industrial dressed runners - they grab my arm - I look back only once to the wounded we leave. They're only a void now. A flowing shield refuses to die. We run again. Tunnels now, my breathing quickens. I see nothing - then a burst of light - sparks fall to the ground. A car howls its alarm, a single figure dressed in dazzling white stands before me. A single red orb. Eyes close. I feel it beneath me...
...The rattling of a train.
The promise of a sparkling new city, untouched by war or famine, awarded to those worthy. The surprise and confusion of my own arrival. Wide unimpaired roads leading to a shining cathedral of administrative might. The dazzling nearness of the ever so distant Citadel. Pristine walls, shimmering pale beneath the spotless lights. A gentle trembles of maroon flags positioned near and far. The people, compressed and plentiful, of elated moods and beaten spirits. Harsh transmissions scattering hostile avians with sweet fictions of lasting stability within...
...The crimson city...Facing its decline. Steadily, monuments turned to ruin. Those that remained collecting the dust from all that did not. The paranoia of the powerful, the resulting violence against the weak. A white armband against my shoulder ripped away by my own hands. Sloshing filth beneath my feet, unfamiliar squalor. Familiar faces. The walls crumble somewhere else. Chaos, warfare. Just as before, just like after. The same every time. Monsters chase me beneath the streets, darker now than ever before, but so little has changed. I watch them pass even as we depart, corralled towards our next oblivion. Nowhere is spared being...
...Corrupted by...FThose who see us through the industrial runoff of City 24. Suits and sycophants. The monsters beneath casting them away at our own expense. My duty done, again and again, just as I dreamed as a girl. Those memories are hollow, they all are, even this very one. Cruelties corrected, only to be enacted again. Always again. Not feeling how I wish to, not thinking how I ought to. Friends seem small beneath the horrors that await to take them. They lash at me, time and time again. Batons and bolts and threats of them to come again. I beg and plead, a whipped dog, thanking evil for sparing me. Fear, pain and agitation. Helpless before...
...Malevolence disguised as virtue.

Home.
No, not home, not really. Its the closest thing to it, but god knows its a world away all the same. I don't call it my home and I'm not sure I ever have since my old district was destroyed. Since I was forced from it. There might just be a divine comedy to this after all. Of all the places, dozens, hell maybe even hundreds, I end up back here. So, what now? The same as ever? Or something entirely different? Both scare me equally - which is just awesome. Well, Emiyo, you're still you. You've outlived a world, a name, and entire cities...and who knows how many within them. There's no sides left to take, cause all the good ones are gone. Nothing left but doing what I can for those who are still alive...

Isolation
Never mind the hunger, and the cold. Snow so polluted you dehydrate right before it as it mocks you. The city is practically falling apart, what little is even standing now as we arrive. The people are the worst part though. More bitter than the wind and all the more eager to show it. All the promises and optimism in the world hasn't changed them a wink. No kindness repaid. No hope rewarded. Some even seem impressed that I go on at all, as if they were the ones I owed my continuation towards. No, I held onto my father hands the first day the horizon broke apart beneath the clouds because of a vow I made, to me, that I would wake up every day and do what I could with the time I had left. It stands unbroken and so do I.

Compliance
They took Rajko's book, but I had no need to record what was instead etched into me. Compliance. Perfected obligation to demands at the direction of nothing but fear. They knew I wasn't loyal. Loyalists don't end up here. If they do, I didn't see them. I only heard my supposed compatriots, howling in the dark between my own turns. Wordless wails; vocalized advice in a language our captors understood, but could not speak. Screaming helps, they cried. Gives your voice purpose, beyond confession, should any such thing be possible. If the larynx breaks before you, victory until the next.

Echo
No jewel even back when it shone. Pressed suits and polished stone, undercut equally by the rot beneath both. Where does this really lead? My home was unrecognizable and barren of the meaning I convinced myself I'd find. I have more homes than I care to recall, and each means as little as the last. Showing me only that I'd rather be anywhere else, be anyone else. Running out of things to lose, devoid of anything to give. They've taken it all. In a riptide of reverberating misery, I barely have even myself. Barely is enough. I was enough...I can be again.LEGACY

Hatred | Dislike | Distrust | Indifference | Acquaintance | Admiration | Friendship | Adoration
|| ------ Dead||
Storm-7 (William Harthgrove): One of the many officers of district 47 I learned not to fear, but admire. When it all collapsed he went beyond what was expected, even of him. He led me away from the fires of the district itself. He saved me.
753 (Gorgeous):He’s gone now. The only Xenian friend I've ever had. I hope those gusts of free air were worth it.
Alexandra Nevski: Fun girl to be around. Every time she was around I knew there would be no trials in the moment. I wish we got more time to spend together but I was always so busy. When the district fell we had no time left. Be safe Alex.
Anastasia Ivanovich: Lovely girl. Couldn’t be further from who I am but perhaps that’s what I like about her. I will look for you wherever I find myself.
John Pierce: I didn’t know him well, but I knew enough. One of the head liquidators, he became instrumental in holding the rebels and infestations back from the city. He has my respect, and dearest hopes that he survived to tell his tale.
Tom J Husky: One of the first people I really got to know. At first, I feared I saw the same impetuous nature that consumed many others, though he seems to have gotten a hold of himself. I hope you are okay old friend.
Natsumi Yamashita: Was never quite too familiar with her. Though, of all the District 47 'overseers' she was one of the few to stand out. Helped me with...well more than one problem.
Venessa Lee: She may not be a doctor, but I will admit she proved me wrong in her time with the JCH. One of the few leaders worth her salt. Somehow.
Minister Ward:He likely thinks little of me, but he helped me on numerous occasions and seems kinder and wiser than many superiors I have come to know. I hope you are happy wherever you are.
Liam Hurst: A fine man. Is kind and accepting, the only thing one has to be. I wish the best for you.
Hope Wolffe: A kind man. Too kind really. Overbearing as he is, I know it comes from a genuine place. Which is all I need in someone. Honesty.
Vice-4: It took me sometime to realize that underneath all that armor was a woman. I hope she never caught onto that. regardless, one of many officers that I knew both in and out of the operating room.
Hunter-4: Another officer from district 47. I never even got to learn their real name, but they never played foul with me, which is something always appreciate amongst the CPF.
RAZOR-8: Ended up working on them more than once. Same with most officers who had to go up against the murderers hiding in the mud. Never had any bad run-ins with them though. I'm sure he got out okay.
Razor-7: I fear him more than anyone else. Though I should be happy he ran from the district, I can’t help but feel a deepened disdain for him. I guess he had to do it, but all of that cruelty...to just run.
Lucy Russel: I know I should like you. I know I do. I'm just a little...downtrodden, I guess. It's not your fault, its not even mine I don't think. It's hard to feel things the way I used to.
Angela Aleinikova: A fine doctor. Works hard and does her duty. Kindly as well, easy to talk to.
Cadance Wattmuff: She was a good girl. Lots of other people seem to not like her, but I'm still in her corner. Just a bit mean to the vortigaunts is all.
D'Angelo: You are kind, and remind me much of my old friend all those years ago in City 17. Yet, that's the very thing that worries me. I can almost see the misery your ambitions will bring even before they have happened.
Alexander Mickievič: You may not know it, but taking the Directors seat was a favor to me. I didn't want it, and you seem right for the job. You're not like the others - at least not yet. I can only hope its stays this way.
Venessa Lee: Seems she made it after all. A good thing to. Shame to see her leave, or be removed from the CMU so readily. I know she had more potential than Angela realized.
Maura Azure:The newest person up to bat in the high seat of the CMU. Wish her the best, though I know too well how draining that position can be. Hopefully she can weather the storm.
Eric Bayer: Its almost certain he's hiding things from me. But still, he makes for good company and is a much needed break from the endless cackling of the party drones. He means well, and that can't be said for many.
Bernard Mulligan: He held up his end of the bargain - with lumps every here and there. He didn't crumble beneath what I can only assume was great pressure behind the scenes. During the times I have spoken to him, I never imagined he wished me harm.
William Harthgrove: We were reunited and separated more times than I can count. This time though, wherever you are, I feel its best you remain there. We couldn't keep this charade up forever.
Casto:I don't even remember his first name. Only reason I know his surname is because people won't stop screaming it. His politics are pretty dumb and his cousin or whatever is a tool...but I guess he's alright. All the shouting gives me a headache though.
Arthur Hastings:He used to be worth something but seemingly sold it all away. I never will truly know if that Civil Protection clown was him or not. Everyone else was convinced, though I just can't imagine he would be that obvious about it.
Sally: Can't quite know what was said, though its clear she's far from trustworthy. So eager to serve her self-interests she couldn't even hide it for a second. Like a pompous loyalist in plaid clothing.
Ilya Zima: True to the BRI's standards, he has turned into a 'scientist' who knows very little of science it would seem. He knows even less of ethics. Hard to believe someone who used to be in the CMU could so quickly turn to madness.
Jasmine Bridge: Even though I don't like her, she is sort of refreshing in a weird way. She's not some backstabber or self-serving egotist. Nor is she some abuser or trickster. She's just...not likeable. There's bliss in that simplicity.
Benjamin Orwell Benedict: Talking to him is genuinely the most difficult task I have held to date. Seems to be nothing more than a moocher, one who probably spends most of his time trying to get higher than his office. Quite childish too.
Kevin: I don't even know your full name, but I know the exact kind of person you are. Powerless before any granted power. A slave to it.
Thomas Newcastle: Absolute representation of the very worst tendencies of the administrators of this world. Brash, arrogant, cruel and without patience. I find renewed vigor everyday I wake up without him hovering above.
Julia Jasmine: The only people that like you, are those you actively pamper. You're a liar, a cheat, and quite possibly, a freak. Whatever gains we once had from you were never worth what you have become lately.ACTIVE
Character Relations | The Wayward Jenifer MaesroeAI never expected you to show remorse for what you had done. Remorse isn't enough. It could be you meant it. Could be. But I don't forget what they told me, how you enjoyed what the freaks imparted onto me. Haven't' forgotten for a second.
An old Ally, worthy still of admiration, despite the rising indifference brought about by chronic absence.
United by the Medical Union and split apart by forces beyond it, as is the case for most allies, I find. The old triumvirate of that small clinic in Twenty-four is long gone now. In another time, perhaps we may have remained close, but distance is a literal prospect in this age and I see your idealized visage far more often than I do the real thing - the actual you.
An ally once more. Limited, no doubt. Still draped in suits unbefitting her, but that's the life she chose.
Like Walker, I cant help but imagine there is more business involved in this aid than revived friendship. It could be that the pessimism I protract to you has overtaken me. But, without a way to know, to truly know, I don't feel those old day's in Geneva will ever come back.
After all this time, the muck of high society finally sunk deep. Unreliable sell-soul.
After becoming your scapegoat for your political failures, I never expected to find much solace in your person. You were long since changed but little did I know you were rather altered entirely. Even in City Eight, it was her that came to wall and never you. Hiding behind your false soldiers and false face. I wish you'd never arrived. I hope our dealings are finished.
Trust isn't so easy to win back. What is fixed is still once broken.
But its not impossible to win back, slowly.
If its an act, this kindness, its a well paced one. Bordering on the genuinely psychotic. Every time I trusted you, reached out a hand, I ended up regretting it. At this point though, I am reduced to nothing. The easiest assault would simply do nothing and look on. I suppose I'll reach out one more time - I never was a good student of life.Eleanor MarchandI'm not so stupid to recognize how you see me. There's resentment there. Impatience. I suppose I can understand that. I am a mess, I am miserable. I just have the unreasonable wish you'd love me at my worst. Being my best self is getting harder every day. I don't know if you'll stick around until the end. I understand, but won't accept.
I cannot help but detect a reflection of myself in you, all the better then that I quite like you.
You never know when you meet your next friend, I suppose. Problems with Civil Protection, a hardened exterior, medical professional and even bandages to match? Girl, we may have just been destined to meet. Closest thing I probably have to a true friend and entirely by accident. Maybe that's how this stuff is supposed to work - I dont really know. Thanks for putting my brain back in straight. Could do without the vision trouble, but it'll make it far easier to ignore management going forward.
I can't be sure if that reflection is growing or fading, but until the mirror breaks, you're still a good friend.
For as much as I like you, its become at least partially clear that there is a streak of selfishness that would override even your deepest attachments. It's a harsh reality of today, whereas mortal peril scarcely intervened in friendship before, now nothing impacts it more. I won't abandon you, but just as you wouldn't die for me, I cannot sit idle waiting for you to get me killed.
We both suck, we both are underwater in the world. So lets swim this current together.
We'll have fallouts, probably many more to come. But I think its clear we can always, always come to our senses in the long run. You wanted a sister, well you basically have one. I'll trust you for as far as I can.
My friend. My sister. My fading little light.
My friend. My sister. His fading little light.
I don't suspect I will ever stop loving you, now more than ever as I have realized more what it means to love. Perhaps it is the nature of a 'sister' to be problematic. I never truly had one, outside of you. Yet, you listen to nobody but yourself. Stubbornly stupid at times. More than anything, what you did to him, someone who loved you as much as I do...what would you be willing to do to me?Stephanie RobertsJealousy and spite. An obsession with twisting all things to be about yourself. Even in the terminal you continued to spiral away from us, with these strange stunts. Now, as a director, your approach to power is like most others. Greedy and envious. Theres still a decent girl in there, for now. But I just don't have the energy to find her anymore.
The friend of my friend is my friend.
Seems nice enough. Eleanor's very, very good friend. Perhaps even illegally so. Certainly not my concern. Fixed my hair so I look significantly less like an escaped inmate, post surgery. Wouldn't you then know it, shortly after she's a doctor herself. Pretty sure I've seen her freaking out before, mental instability affair, but as long as I don't mention it, it doesn't exist.
Drawn together by circumstance, stood together by choice.
I know you well now, and miss you when you aren't around. A fate the world seems to be conspiring daily to see realized. But, been conspiring for years to kill me, never has. You'll be no different, if I have anything to say about it. If. Our little enforcer issue needs solved sooner rather than later, its getting worse. You'll wake up and we'll find our own means to right the wrong.
I miss the better times with you.
Healed, I believe. Hopefully not regretted.
I cannot know why you did what you did. Perhaps its better not known to me. Drudging up your incensed hatred of, what looked to you, success - it brings us nothing. You have aided me since though, and even after my fall, horrible and absolute it was, you've neither gloated nor appeared satisfied. It's...better this way.Micheal Yards
Though he'll never make me laugh, he doesn't make me cry either.
So far, something of a fool. Yet, an endearing fool, the kind that makes you smile through the harvest of bad jokes and mistimed comments. Though, nothing funny to say about what we've wadded through lately. Stuck by me. Pretty sure he's working his way to catching feelings though. Which, I mean, I don't dislike.
Where lies the difference between sweetness and helpless naivete?
It was, in retrospect, incredibly stupid of me to play around with emotions like that. Sure, the thought is well enough but where are we? Where are we going? Battered and bruised all the way, wherever that is. There's no time for any of it. No place for it. How could there be? Should there be?
What am I going to do with you?
On one hand, absolutely stupid. Acts like those people in bad horror films, not that I ever watched them. Constantly running into danger. Impulsive on the other. Doesn't always think before speaking, doesn't always seem to even know which way to go. Then, one some yet unknown third hand...I kind of really like you. More fool me, or not? I don't know.
There's something here, I'm almost sure of that.
Despite my oh-so serene and positive nature, I suppose its strange I approach, well, 'love' so harshly. Its uncomfortable and pretty scary. Confusing too. Do I actually, or is this just an effect of time I can't even see? By the time love meant anything to me, the world was ending. Is it even the same anymore?
Though I love him, all I'll do now is cry.
Why did you do this to me?
A singular person I refuse to fail again. Despite and because of it all - the man I love.
So much time wasted on our flaws and grievances. Maybe it had to be this way, maybe not. Nothing will be perfect, but I can accept that. You're enough. More than enough. I understand myself now, in ways I never did before. My best efforts have not made my life any less cold and miserable. I couldn't hardly comprehend the warmth of love. Now I do, and its worth fighting for.Cangaroo
Like the days of old, A Vortigaunt to call a friend. A name forgotten, a name renewed.
How long has it been? Doesn't matter now, the past is fickle and for all I understand of it, it hardly happened. I do remember him though, strolling around the clinic as he did. If there was ever a reason Vortigaunts should rise from their squalor, it would be him reminding us just how uplifting they can be. I only hope he doesn't fall prey to the ambitions of his kind, which has taken all others I once knew.
Like the days of old, A friend. Nothing more to ever say.
You've known me for some time, even if the day of our meeting is lost in the void of time that proceeds us. Still, I know you well, and despite how strange you can be, you're better than plenty of humans I know. One day, we'll find a way to help you. Even if it costs us something down the line.
The truest friend I'll ever know.
You were there since the start, and still are. I've relied on you for more than you may even know. I trust you more than myself. I'll save you. A true soul like yourself should never be extinguished.Tzu
I've found I get along with most Vortigaunts, and it was an actual joy to hear of Gorgeous once more.
It's pure chance when the past rounds back at you. For me, almost always in a horrible, disastrous manner. However, it was nice being able to simply recollect on better times, times otherwise entirely forgotten if not for your magic stuff. You seem a good sort besides. Present and a pleasure to talk to. Even said Vortigaunts 'know me.' It's not that cool, but its pretty cool.
A true friend. One of the few I trust to both hold the light, and beat back the darkness.
Powerful, but mindful to others. Wise but not arrogant. Everyone could learn something from you, and its shame so few would ever listen. As for me, the training you've provided I can feel will be invaluable. The words of hope you spoke of, right ahead of the bridge reminded me that maybe, just maybe, theres a better end out there after all.Uwe Shultz
Likeable fellow, not too dissimilar to a younger brother. Much younger.
Short. So short. Though he deeply got onto my nerves for a start, cant help but warm towards a gremlin. Never would say it, but the general antics and nonsense are an acceptable, if nothing else, distraction from a more dreary day.
An uncomfortable reminder I am not immune to change
Neither is he, of course. There's hardly anything of the more buoyant personality from Industrial 24. Now all he does is drink and fall ill. Constantly. I'm not entirely unconvinced he's simply a case of Munchausen, of the most twisted and desperate variety.
An uncomfortable reminder, others are not either.
Even with a gun to my head, you cheered on for my downfall. You swear you'd not do it again. Maybe we'll find out just how true that is soon.
I hope that I can trust you, genuinely.
I'm not one to learn my lessons. Jenifer had to betray me many times before I finally learned to never trust her truly. You've only done so once. Perhaps you really are reformed, or maybe once the pressure is applied you'll turn on me all over again. I choose to believe the former.John Walker
Once a decent guy. Then a complete jerk. Now, barely in anyone's thoughts.
Up jumped suits are something of a plague in this world. You weren't the first nor the most prolific of them. If anything, its just sad thinking about how people can change without anyone ever really noticing. For the best, I suppose, that your name is rarely uttered around the clinic then. We've far greater worries than a irritable middle-manager these days. Maybe Randy is in charge of your coffee deliveries.
I can't pick and choose allies. Besides, Geneva feels like so long ago.
Maybe you changed, or help me somebody maybe I did. But, more so than the sycophants and bastards in this assembly, or in the higher chairs above, you seem willing to help me. That's rare. Impossibly so. I'm not blind to how limited this aid probably is...but in a world of nothing, something goes quite the distance.
Upon reconsideration, maybe I ought to.
A researcher with a hair fuse and a bad attitude. Selfish, in a word. Dangerous in another. I regret what happened to him, but that does not suddenly erase what he did. Or what he was unwilling to do. Yes, selfish. I can only imagine Jenifer gets along with you well still.Wim Docht
Loyalist and an influential one at that who advertises virtue. It wont last.
I've never fit in with his type...or any type these days. But, if there is one lesson I've learned, loyalists dont tolerate that for long. Tribunal, demotion or some other imaginative fate awaits me. He won't miss me.Idris (Rastaman)
Keen to switch sides. Cant trust you, not around her.
For a moment, thought I may come to appreciate you. Hard to deal with and caught me at a horrible time. But, you seemed harmless enough, too old to harm anyone and too wild-looking to plan to. Hell, I want to like you but you stood with them against me, and said you'd do so again. In that I believe you. I believe the others too.Henry Blaire
Traded a suit for fatigues. Traded decency for a rifle.
The only thing to even distinguish a drone like you from any of the others is what you were before. A, partially, respected chairman of the diet. Now traded that fortune to abuse others in the one place not even CP's bother to tread. Didn't fall as much as you did trip yourself. But nobody changes that fast. This is you, and just like others you'll find no mourners in your final ditch.
Or not.
Introduced to someone I had no desire to ever see again. An entire planet, yet here you are. One of us is in the wrong place, and I don't think its you. Watima Nakata
A life worth of envy. Morals worthy of doubt. Transgression worth overlooking.
There was a time I despised you. I still don't like you, I think. But, you're with her, and its my job to accept that. You know the score and you can be pleasant enough. Sometimes. Knowing what you are unsettles me. Especially as I become more like it. I choose to be better than you, even in this. William Stoner
Not much crossed paths. I suspect that will change much.
Largely a mystery to me. MOE, so no stranger to lies and showmanship. Beneath me, I guess, but I don't even know why. I know why he picked me...but why you? Lin Yuan
Able merchant. Perhaps a reliable friend.
Strikes me as the kind of girl who keeps to herself. Strikes me as the kind of girl that might even want to be my friend. This makes her rare on two counts. Runs a good store...and heard me out when I was desperate to simply speak. Good excuse to get back to cooking.Jonathan Douglas
A well-meaning man, during both my rise and my fall
A better version of Varos. The same capacity and know-how, without treating me like dirt. Even now, that I'm some lesser being, he still brings little gifts and even checked up on me. He knows I never wanted to be one of them. Makes me wonder if deep down, he's as disappointed in me as I am myself. Like them all, he wouldn't say so. Even if it was true.
Character Relations | The Lost Randy Cole
Untrustworthy. Unreliable. Unimaginably dense. The spitting image of a modern suit, occupying a lab coat.
The kind of person that would, and probably has, sold his mother to Civil Protection for a chocolate bar. He also probably demoted his mother to 'maid' for not showing up to band practice. A horrible doctor, a lackluster personality and a dreadfully untrustworthy individual. There is no doubt that as manager you see only your own benefits. Everyone knows it. Vivian Garner
A poor director who never evades an aura of misgivings.
The demotion was beyond stupid, even you have probably come to realize that. I think less of the lost paper trail and more of the clarity it provided. Something about you doesn't sit right. From what I am told, perhaps I even know why. Regardless, you hide things from us for sure and with so many controversies following the clinic, you are likely to receive a demotion yourself here soon.
I doubt I will ever see you again. Good luck, for what its worth.
You've done little to earn my respect and honestly, even less to earn my gratitude. But I didn't hate you despite that. You were just...a bad boss. In a world of murderers and fiends all around, there is so much worse you could have been. Elowyn Reinguard
On the surface an unassuming intellectual eccentric. Beneath it, something else surely.
I've known you for some time, yet never gotten to know you. Perhaps there was a reason for that. What with the rumors of what research gets up to, not to mention those glasses you tried to put on me. Or is it the fact you are oddly familiar with the folks of the old grotto? Still, she's shown interest in burying the hatchet. It wouldn't be good of me to do otherwise. Especially given I may owe her for the bullet she caught.
Who knows what was and wasn't true. But you're a world away now, whatever the case.
Good luck. Theres little more I could ever offer you. No idea where you ended up, or why, but I choose to believe you are in a decent city, living a decent life. A fair wish, I think. 'Baton Rogue'
A unit with nascent morals. Or just leftovers from what he once had. A unit all the same.
A helpful unit is second in rarity to only a altruistic rebel. That you even offered is an anomaly, that you seemingly meant it all the more. Doubt it worked, even if it did, we're not in Twenty-Four anymore. Even if it did, it was the least you could do. Suppose I should consider myself lucky I reminded you of a wayward daughter, don't imagine you'd be nearly so graceful otherwise. Who knows if you'll show up again. Juniper Stenhouse
Not worth the air she steals from humanity.
The time will come when this one gets what she deserves. If there were a dark purpose in my life, I can only imagine it would be delivering that very fate to this begotten whore. But that's not who I am, even now. The last thing I could ever allow her to do is destroy me. Or perhaps destroy those I care for... 'The Mattress Cop'
An anonymous assistant. Helped once for sure, and more beyond.
Another unit from I24...and with a questionable name. Supposedly one that didn't try to murder me, or at least actively partake in that pastime of their colleagues. Keeping track of units is impossible. The armband is the only anchor I have of who you are, and half the time I am reminded you are all not so interested in redeeming yourselves. After all, its impossible to know somebody who doesn't own a face. ✞Noah Majors✞
MCP. Political enthusiast. Hardcore loyalist.
Never trust any of those titles, let alone anyone who wields them together. Very, very few people of that sort take a kind interest in me. Even fewer both me and my closest friends. He's up to something, and I intend to make it as difficult as possible to get anything out of me he wants to that end.
There was nothing I could have ever done.
Surely there was nothing I could have ever done. He never meant anything before, not genuinely. He couldn't...he didn't want to be redeemed, he hurt people and that was that. I didn't want him dead, but he did...maybe deserve it...but maybe is never enough. Alexander Hemingway
MCP member dressed in Sunday best. Yet, not my enemy.
No choice but to be thankful for the aid provided. Even some empathy sprinkled on top. Though the reason escapes me and that only makes me all the more worried about some hidden scheme. I can believe the odd unit or two possibly not wishing the worst for me - but MCP? One of seemingly deep connections regardless of rank. Caution echoes in the back of my mind during out every meeting. Yet I fear I am being unfair.
Like most good things, sought out and extinguished.
For as little time as he knew me, the help was unexpected. Possibly even cost him everything. Was it simply because I reminded him of a sister that he risked and lost all he had in City Eight? If so, towards her he is heading. There has to be some good in that, at least. Though he didn't believe it. Someone has to. Farewell, to an unexpected ally of the MCP. ✞Kurtis Hamilton✞
Wont forget what you let happen. Wont forget what you did. Good acts dont wash away the bad, even in greater numbers.
Never claimed to be some paragon of forgiveness, but you've done enough to earn at least a modicum of it. There are times I need to remind myself to hold onto that contempt. At some point you get beaten enough that the person casually watching falls at the corner of memory. But you did watch. You did help. Haven't gone back on it yet, but there's something about you that speaks of that capacity.
And so it was you all along. Numb to humanity. A murderer in all but uniform.
There was a chance you were being honest about how you wanted the best for people. Not so much anymore. You gave up the one decent thing you do in this world to spend more time murdering people for fun. Then screaming about how righteous it was on some forgotten loudspeaker no one will listen to. What a life.
Deep down, I cant help but know death would suit you better than life.
There was never a chance. My kindness blinds me to much, but to you it blocked all senses. Were I anyone else in this godforsaken world, I'd see that magical crowbar of yours and raise it to your skull. I regret that I lack what it takes to be a monster like you.
Me and my mouth.
There was never a chance. I knew that. Now you really are dead, with all that I said applying, just like that. I likely was no more than stones throw from your corpse. All the horrible things you did, the awful ideals you lived with are now buried with you in some half-burnt pipe, not even the xenians want anything to do with. But so is the good. There wasn't a chance. ✞Mac Heystek✞
A CP reject who settled for fatigues...and a horrible prick.
Theres not a moment that passes I couldn't revisit your malicious antics with some of my own. As if the mad dog thinks his pockets are deeper than my own. I could have let you die, watch you exsanguinate right in front of me for what you've done. Any suspicions raised would be quelled with indifference. Nobody would have stood to judge me. Except myself.
Still a reject. Still a prick.
Hardly the time behind the wall to go picking fights though. I know better than to trust him beyond, perhaps, a loosely defined duty-bound promise to not shoot me. Though such a standard is fleeting and mild to begin with. Regardless, he would gladly murder people - I can tell that much. He could never be some friend of mine. A loose understanding, without agreement.
Dead, for certain. Though I'll do what I can to say otherwise.
It does Eleanor no good to grieve, so I'll protect her from this fact. Sorta. Not really much I can do but pretend I truly believe the colonel is some infallible saint. Not politically savvy enough to know what he is, but I know its not that. You weren't a good person, honestly, you were an outright bad one. My life has never been about throwing the wicked to the wolves though. Farewell, in another life you might have been a good soldier. Chloe Lepelletier
CCR. Nothing good about them. Potentially the only...decent person in there though.
Theres no logic in trusting someone who represents, even in part, people who act and are known to be horrid. Come here soon, the choice may not be upon me. If it comes to the worst, I'd be a fool to not try and...maybe...coming to some kind of agreement with this woman.
As expected, she is decent. Flawed to her core, but decent.
I owe her for the care she provided in making sure I wasn't eaten alive out here. Though this care hasn't been exactly...the most potent in terms of effectiveness, that it was offered with any genuine standing implores to her better half. She is still CCR, and I have no doubts similar phantoms are floating around her mind as any of the others. Though they do not seem to rule her the same.
Good riddance. A drone belongs amongst machines.
Good will evaporated rapidly, and she herself showed that kindness was transactional as is often the case. Her precious CCR cast her towards some fort I hear. Whatever, glad to be rid of her. She's secure in her warrior fantasy. I'm secure far away from it. Ashley Valera
Thus far, the only one to come to my aid. Despite her...prior intentions.
Seems to be likeminded in the general good will of the people, least I think so. Had a hand in Yamamoto, I am sure. Perhaps he did deserve it, but to engage in that is a path that only curves one way. For now though, far as I can tell, in that sea of mindless fools she was the only one to not rejoice at my conditioning at the hands of those lying scumbags.
There's something wrong with her. Somehow, I just know it.
SI already know she has the makings of a killer but after so long in that high throne, could anything good be left? When is the last time I've ever seen that? I can't even remember and I can almost feel the disregard coming from her. Am I immune to this, or just useful. There's no way my name missed the list of unsavory collaborators without her involvement but why? Am I just being paranoid...
What is there to even say?
Hardly a farewell at all. Oh well. We weren't that close I guess. Not in the way people used to be. Not from her perspective, certainly. She had plenty of more useful political allies. I'll find my own way down.Marcus Oswald
Stable, long-standing and reliable. An odd collection of traits for the scientifically inclined.
No clinic I ever witnessed has maintained a good history with researchers, even as individuals. Perhaps its more so myself, for some reason or another. Regardless, you haven't set me or mine ablaze and you've shown to be willing to help at no benefit to yourself. A party slip would be worth much to many Tier Threes. Though it is far less to me the gesture was never forgotten. I carry it still. You were right about Randy too.
So much for that, you cripple-tripping jerk. Apparently I didn't know you quite so well.
There it is - the heel turn I should always expect but never see coming. People should only be trusted as well as they treat you at your most vulnerable. Nothing provides quite such clarity then getting tossed to the floor with a broken leg. Maybe we'll see how I can return such favors once it heals.
Not stupid enough to trust a top researcher, but not so bitter to ignore some qualities.
The capacity for good long has meant little for those who can eagerly ignore it. I don't know you well, despite all these years, but I know what you do. I know what you've done. Some good, some bad. Unpredictable comes to mind, and with no comfort to join it.Ophelie Latourelle
In my heart, I know I care about you, but in my head, I know that a ghost of my own took you, and I did nothing.
Time is a barrier unmatched. Beyond it, at least I am told, you endured and evolved well beyond the episodic rants I subjected you to. That those birds whisked you away to some place unknown...that I know it and have essentially done nothing...that I took a liar at their word just to make a decision easier. I should have pressed, demanded or even coerced your reality from them. Maybe there is time yet to prove I can - if you are even still alive by now.
I can't imagine I do long distance well...but I won't imagine trying any other option.
To my amazement - I kept this promise. Figures this would be the one I keep, unspoken and unknown to all except myself. Well, it isn't like I wasn't lacking the desire to prove to myself I could do it. With it, I know your fate and I know that I wasn't' lied to. Perhaps I haven't been lied to at all. Didn't consider the wider effect this little escapade could incur on me. The alterations. The risk. Was it worth the option to trade papers? Yeah, maybe. I aspire to believe so.✞ Rajko Karavidić ✞
All or nothing. This is all I have left.
Seats this high suit me no better. Maybe even worse. For all the discomfort and nerve-racking politics, is a promised better way. I don't have time for doubts, or concerns. Damnit all do you not do your everything to increase both, though.
A coward and a fool. What now?
Victory, at the cost of all concern. Now that you have what you want, you do nothing with it. You lied about your intentions, and left those of us who actually cared astray, in a sea of likewise sycophants you fostered. I can't even begin to imagine why. You had the key to change and withheld it, for nothing.
Not a coward after all.
Just a failure, like me. Murdered by the regime, in front of a bounty of excited and ravenous loyalists. The same brood that always sniffs blood with a smile. I wont say I...forgive you. Had you stuck to the plan, had you stuck with me, we might have been able to save this city. We could have saved the world. Though my friends assure me its not the case - I cannot help but wonder - have you and I both failed it now instead?✞ Rene Chevalier ✞
A good man, somewhere in there. Somewhere.
I have no tools to resist your efforts. No means to even try. Rajko ensures this. As well as City Thirteen. You wear your intentions openly, but I hardly care which suited prick controls City Twenty-four. Only what happens to the people. But I'm the only one who does. Who truly does. You are like Orwell, more and more every day.
No ally of mine. Dead or worse, something greater in another life
I saw you taken just before me. I can only imagine the train we boarded was shared, though I never heard or saw you. I've never seen you since, period. Reality is, you are almost certainly dead. I don't weep for this - you were a killer. You were a bad person. you spoke of hanging and slaughtering so many without even realizing I was among that same number. Still...you were far from the worst of your breed.
Faction Relations:
Hatred | Dislike | Fear | Distrust | Indifference | Respect | Admire | Adore
CRU Liquidators: A scrap heap shifts, one bike falling to the bottom of a barricade constructed of forgotten baubles and machinery. A masked unit, rifle upon his back approaches a similarly armed worker. Gathered as equals, they discuss moments to come. A minister man's the barricade, barrel pointed down a shell battered street. He looks over, and nods. She mourns them all.
CMU: Crowded into an apartment that mirrored the luxury of forgotten times were flowing white coats, donned by smiling fellows. A room of friends and colleagues, united by something approaching goodwill. She occupies the corners, observing, anxiety prickling beneath contentment. For a moment, the woes of the age melt away, and she lives a life she dreamed of before she was old enough to doubt. The only dream that never died.
Vortigaunts: Watching closely, she views the Vortigaunt examining the cylindrical junk. An old can of Breen's water. Its lip curls into a mimicking, crooked smile upon catching her gaze. She concedes it has improved. It places the can in a bag, a clanking personal collection. He sweeps all other trash away.
Citizens: An old man stumbles into the room, forgetting why he had ever come. The questions are cast, the tests given. He fails them all, stammering his excuses. With a false smile, she delivers him to a bored unit, who latches onto the elders frail arm. He looks back, and asks her to remember him. She wont.
Combine: The bench creaks as she picks at her empty jar. The world darkens, eclipsed in shadow. Skywards she peers, and sees Sols halo sundered in two, split apart by the cold, alien monolith. It does not shine against its light, but resists it with hollow majesty. Day returns, as the star makes way.
Combine Civil Administration: All eyes upon her as she finishes her truth. The anger fades, and she is among a sea of strangers. All visages of friendship fading. Her shouts of mercy and understanding casting a silver light upon her. The sea glares, silence rolls in like a wave. All eyes rest upon her. She blinks and her sleeve falls away, a towering host of a tribunal now looking down upon her. Faceless amidst the colossal darkness of the Nexus. She blinks again, a single red light shining the way to the edge of the abyss. It stares back at her.
Rebels: She shifts in the sofa, flinching as the sledgehammer strikes the ground lazily on its head. A scruffy Asian man meets her gaze, exposed, unmasked. He smiles, innocently, tightening his grip on the implement. He speaks, heaving it over his shoulder. Half a dozen weapons lower, permitting her to leave. 'Come back any time,' he says, without a hint of a lie. A memory flashes of yesterdays parley, reached and broken - of several homes burned - all in the name of the impossible. Those who do, wish they hadn't.
Overwatch Transhuman Arm: The tunnels beneath the streets echo. Flashes of mystical blue light shine down pitch darkened maintenance shafts. Glowing eyes swim through the unknown, looking into her own. She was loyal, now she is hunted. She is loyal again, now she is hunted once more. But the eyes never change.
Civil Protection: A barrel slams against her mouth, retracting as soon as it makes contact. She staggers and falls alongside a tumbling chunk of her own tooth. Another shutters painfully in her gums. On both knees, the weapon gleams, an opportunity. Eyeless lens stare back at her, his grip slackening -- a dare. Her gaze meets the floor again as a final tear mixes with her bloodied mouth. There will be another time.
Combine Conscripted Reserve: A drunk stumbles down the street, casting away kindness for granted and returning only hatred. One officer steps in line with the other, two snakes standing on the same blade of grass yet christened a tower. Murderers in all but uniform. Honored by only themselves.
Loyalists: The crowd stands at attention, throwing their enmity towards her, wrapped in slurs and wishes of death. Joy and the ramparts of excitement cascade through a heartless mass. Sharing only one mind, falsities and synapses never truly forged occupying that dark space. The crimes false, all but for one that remains unspoken; decency.

Eric Bayer: Its almost certain he's hiding things from me.
