Extend the Offensive Roleplay clause to the R-word.

Curb or bar the use of R****d IC and OOC.
Search it in the discord server and you will see instances of it dated today.
I have not publicly raised grievance of it before but it's just disheartening and frankly annoying to see it as prolific as it is.
I am interested in what arguments can be presented in its defense that do not apply similarly to the ban on the F- and N-words.
Not a demand for censorship. Just a suggestion, and that hopefully others are as disturbed by its frequent usage.
 
unironically, can we please not have that word be slung around as often as it is? it is incredibly offensive to many people on the autism spectrum including myself (and i can assume other server members as well). getting rid of it would not be a detriment to roleplay quality at all
 
Tbf, could probably reduce its usage but not outright ban it. I think most people who use it geniunely use it to express their disdain at something which is beyond dumb or use it in some other non offensive form or joke manner.

I do not believe it has ever been used in a offensive manner or insult towards another.

Just an expression of how one feels towards something. Its a word no one really bans ngl except for those who have very strict bans on slurs of anykind.

Its ooc usage is covered by the general ruleset governing respect.
 
My opinion is bias because I am bias on this, as that is where I am standing on the terms of opinion.

I won't be banning words such as that. There's a reason the quoted labels above that you first mentioned are legitimately banned.
But I'm not banning something that is so overused that you'd hear it as far as nearly every League of Legends or Call of Duty MP lobby, today.

I am, and it doesn't offend me in the slightest. Why would or should it? By definition the term means having an IQ less than 50.

This is a Serious RP server, if people can't handle a few bad mouthings then they might be playing on the wrong game. I'm not running a nursery.
 
I don't intend to fight you personally over this, Rad-X, because I really appreciate this being seen at all, so thank you first and foremost. Just want to address what you and others said.

I feel this also applies to the rest of the outright-banned language on the server.

A fair point, as I didn't expect to make any traction out of this post; people are used to it at this point.
While (as Robert said) it is not used to target people specifically for being autistic or otherwise, I don't feel it is without harm.
"You must be a r-word if ..." carries the same baggage as "You must be a f-word if ..." to me.
It levies one group (albeit not marginalized based on sexuality, race or class, but instead disability) as the butt of an insult.

Something-something-bundle of sticks synonym for the f-word. Words express much more than their dictionary definition.

This feels in bad taste considering the expansion of the rules to encompass other slurs.

I hope not to misrepresent vilhjalmrf's words from the thread which preceded the rule expansion, when I quote:

I understand that slurs exist in the real world, even moreso in our fictional world and around the time of the occupation.
I understand that individuals will have different sensitivities or insensitivities to language.
But I do not trust individuals to represent offensive roleplay in a constructive fashion.

Again. I don't imagine it bothers many others on the internet so I doubt any change will rise from this, but I'm really interested in the discourse surrounding this.
 
As much as I agree with you, Luna, you're wasting your effort trying to substantiate a change in this department. People are too attached to slurs for some reason. You'll be told you're being oversensitive and dismissed out of hand for bringing it up, like what's just happened.
 
A simple solution that caters to both sides of this issue is to maybe include some kind of filter that censors all slurs or slur adjacent language so that we don't have to have this thread over and over again whenever someone disagrees on a word being allowed
 
Just add a setting in game that allows clientside censorship of offensive words, this way you don't infringe on people's freedoms of speech and it can be a personal preference if you want them censored or not.

This is really a non issue but I think my suggestions caters to both

make a clientside addon that replaces every slur and insult with the following words:

friend
pal
bud
buddy

Not everybody's inured to slurs in the way a gmod roleplayer (derogatory) is, this is a real player and their concerns are more than just shit-stirring. They would need to justify their concern a lot less if it was a concern with people calling eachother f-slurs or n-words (which was a very real issue until recently, let's not forget).

They've also shown assent to a client-side censor which kind of goes to show theyre not here just to start shit, if they wanted to cause a problem they'd be going much harder against the massive resistance this suggestion's generated.
 
I'll just rephrase the whole message to be clearer, I see your concern and annoyance towards the word, however it shouldn't be banned or heavily moderated for the following reasons:

1. The server revolves around Freedom of Roleplay, if your character wants to call somebody a retard (Which is very common within the Civil Protection) they should be free to, Rad is surely not going to heavily moderate what an oppressive force like the Civil Protection should say. Remember the world ended in 2001, it's heavily moderated as it is, slurs were much more common at the time until 2020

2. The usage of the word OOCly has always been fine to describe as Robert said dumb or foolish things the self has accomplished, I have found even myself calling myself a retard when I misunderstand or do anything stupid.

3. Never have I ever heard people with any sort of disabilities or personal problems be extremely bothered by the word retard, as the word used against someone would be the same as telling someone to go fuck themselves in a non friendly way, it will be counted as toxicity.

I can understand that some comments might make you feel uncomfortable, it might sound rude or a shocker but the server rules do not revolve around your likes and dislikes, if it was a real issue more members of the community including Server Council would bring this up, but it is not the case. lastly I find this post full of hypocrisy as just a few days ago you made a very inappropriate comment which I won't be repeating in this response, which indeed had caused discomfort in myself and other people.​

So much text. i dont really care. I just hate when crybabies constantly need to censor all words in a dystopian reality because their feely weelys get hurt.

JUST PLAY THE GAME
 
Has anybody considered that HL2RP character are not politically correct like the average snowflake in 2024. They will use slurs, they will be offensive - there will be racism, homophobia, and especially sexism. I mean, for fucks sake, the F-Word is banned despite the combine banning homosexuality outright. The Combine may consider this language unprofessional to use - in other words, the equivalent of antisocial behaviour, and you'll get smacked around for saying it, as you should, and everybody moves on with their day because it was a word said in an In-character fictional environment roleplayed by a non-prejudiced real human being who would be perfectly reasonable to talk to outside of that setting.

Make. It. Make. Sense.
