A tape labelled 'I REMEMBER NOW' is recovered from Beckett's body. You decide to listen to it.
A familiar voice is heard——almost, as if she were alive again.
A familiar voice is heard——almost, as if she were alive again.
"I remember, now."
"I remember everything that had happened. Why I'm here... the way this used to feel; it was beautiful. I started as any other kid... full of hope... full of... dreams—even after they arrived; I had adjusted... I didn't have much of a choice. After they were done with me, I was transferred to City Thirteen—A shy... stubborn, childish bitch, before I was taught proper discipline in Industrial Twenty Four."
"I thought I had reached perfection... I was... someone—I was important, I felt... wanted. I became important in the Worker Union, before... they took me for four hundred and Two days. They took me, starved me, tortured me."
[A LONG PAUSE IS AUDIBLE. THE WOMAN BREATHES IN, AND THEN BREATHES OUT.]
"You... ruined my life."
"I thought it was all... normal again. After a while... I readjusted to normal life... I ignored those... disgusting scars you left on my body. I ignored them—I ignored the trauma... I joined the Conscription Force—The Worker Union... I fucking survived the entire... journey outta' Twenty Four."
"But now... I have... no other choice. I'm sorry I wasted all your resources; constantly being injured... acting recklessly. I endangered others and put others at constant risk. I didn't want——..."
[THE WOMAN'S VOICE BREAKS. A SOB ESCAPES HER LIPS, BEFORE SHE CONTINUES.]
"I'm sorry I got so upset. I don't know why I always... went too far—why I... pushed everyone away... Why I have to walk to the edge just to know that... that I'm really there. That... people cared about me. I guess I was... never really there. And, for what it's worth... I think that's what's for the better; I know that it's... too late. I know I can't stay."
"This place—it's not meant to hold me. I don't belong here, anyway."
"I never did."
[THE WOMAN BEGINS TO CRY. THE LAST WORDS ESCAPE AS A WHISPER.]
"Goodbye, Friends."
The cassette player opens again, spitting out the tape that was playing.
