The combine are the only thing keeping the gas contained... we are the good guys

Even though I didn't get to explore his character at all because I was too busy trying to stay undercover and all that, I was trying to go for a man suffering from a horrid case of Quixotism . To him, the gas was some sort of bio-weapon or something of the sort the combine would use to subjugate the masses and/or snuff out resistance.

Though he was informed that the destruction of the lab would only leave it to infecting the entire city, he convinced himself that the Combine would be forced to destroy the gas, that it wouldn't leave the underground facility. And even then, he saw the citizens that would fall victim acceptable losses rather than allowing the Combine to utilize it for themselves.

At all costs, the Combine could not have whatever that red mist was, and the man didn't want to risk finding another solution than mission impossible-ing in and blowing the place up.

All in all, did the resistance benefit from this more than they lost? Who knows. But the man got his mission complete, even if indirectly
