Just by the back entrance to Indigent-3, dubbed "Devi's Tattoo Bar", tucked behind a solitary tree, a hastily assembled memorial honours the sacrifice of valiant resistance fighter Sar'Run, more commonly known as Fabu. A little leaflet is tied to the chainlink fence behind it. It reads:
Very few residents of the Condemned Zone arrive here by choice; the district around Indigent Street well deserves its name, and for its people every day is a struggle to survive. The restless march of the Combine and those who serve themselves by serving it has taken an uncountable myriad of things from us remaining inhabitants of Earth, and even then Indigent stands particularly destitute. However, in these slums, swamps, and old metro stations, there is one thing its residents have guarded jealously from the watchful eye of Citadel 24 : Hope - A promise for the future. The hope for freedom. The promise of freedom.
Fabu, a liberated vortigaunt, was and remains the embodiment of Indigent's collective hope for freedom. Many hundreds of years of age, he had yet to reach the designation of a Sage among his kin, but was nonetheless a renowned role model for them. His tireless efforts to liberate the citizens of City 24 in general and his shackled kin specifically have in turn earned him the love of respect of all residents of the Condemned Zone. He was regarded by many of us as a hero, a champion, a role model, and a friend.
Here lies he now, Fabu. His soul has returned to the vortessence. He fell during a brave attempt to free his kin from the brutal oppression they endure in the innermost districts of City 24. Few were there when it happened, but dozens flock to this memorial site now, to mourn. And to remember.
In his short time here in the city, he has done more to bridge the divide between humans and vortigaunts, more to unite them in their struggle for freedom, than all the Combine's pawns together could ever hope to undo. Born Sar'Run, he has chosen to take his human name, Fabu, to the grave with him. Forever will humanity be tied closer to that essence which binds all vortigaunts and all life together in kinship.
Fabulinus, whom Fabu is named in honour of, was the ancient Roman god who taught children how to speak. When a child said its first words, it was customary for the parents to thank Fabulinus for it.
Fabu, much like his namesake, has taught us all a valuable new way of communicating with each other - he has taught us to speak, and he has taught us to speak up, and we are thankful. We hope that wherever he is now, he knows he will always have our love, gratitude, and admiration.
In loving memory of Sar'Run, Fabu, who lives on in our hearts and in our minds. Indigent Weeps this day - but it will not be silenced.
