You find yourself deep within the Nexus, in a wing which you are most familiar with. The Civil Protection wing is commonly transversed, especially by yourself. You made your way into the armory, finding it to be stocked with various terminals, lockers and shelving filled with various items. Just across the room, you’d find one of the lockers cracked open. As any curious person would, you walked over and opened it, revealing the contents of one of the units. Amongst the various items, alcoholic beverages along with a cam recorder accompanying the alcohol with several tapes next to it.
With your interest piqued, you took a few glances around the room before taking the recorder and the tapes. Closing the locker, you swiftly departed from an armory to a more secluded area of the Nexus. Sitting down, you first insert a tape labeled “Day 1” with a name inscribed under it, into the recorder after having powered it on. It quietly emits a mechanical whine before whirring, an image being displayed on the screen. Whilst it loaded, you dusted off the dust that caked itself on the top of the recorder and the tapes. This image held for a few seconds before it began moving, and then un-vocoded voice of JUDGE-4 came through.

You hear thunderous footsteps echo through the armory door. In an effort to preserve your position, you quickly stash away the tapes back into their original positions. Locking the locker shut, you begin making your way back out the armory and into the Nexus once more.

”Day 1” Oliver Nonnan | Tape 1
In-view was a basic, bluebanded, bald Civil Protection Officer on a bunk without his mask. After looking down at the floor for a few, he deeply inhaled whilst looking up at the camera.
“They call me JUDGE-4, but my name is Oliver Nonnan. I was going to use this as a way to diary, sort of originally, but now it’s just a way for me to document who I am before I subject myself to MMR. I don’t know what it’s going to replace, so this is a precautionary measure. If it doesn’t replace my memories or my will to come back here, I’ll be sure to come back here and record more. To listen to my thoughts, just insert the other tapes. Now onto myself.
Before I enlisted, I had served with the CWU for four months and in that time, I made a great deal of friends and relationships. Saw many people grow, others… not so much. After that time, I had sent in my assessment form, thinking much of it. Guess you and I know how that went. Now I’m here. When that form was sent in, I didn’t think I would’ve been subjected to the worst of humanity, but I’ve seen worse than that and probably… will see even more gruesome shit. “
After deeply sighing, he reached over to the cam recorder which stopped the recording. You begin inserting the various other tapes all labeled with different names of other individuals.
“Raymond Saint Albert” The Mentor | Tape 2
“Raymond. Saint. Albert. You were essentially my mentor in the CWU, more so when he was still a Senior Worker. Raymond, you helped me get to where I was and I appreciate it. Just unfortunate, they accepted my assessment form and I somehow passed the interview. I now know you did your best during that one curfew and that there was nothing you could do. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”
“Samuel Lacrose” The Ascender | Tape 3
“Samuel Lacrose. I watched you go from Apprentice to Manager. From no one to Tier Four, I commend you. It pulls at me every day that I can’t speak to you freely anymore. Stay well, my friend. I’m afraid you’ll never see me for who I was ever again.”
“Alex Weaver” Pops | Tape 4
“And so, you’re dead. Don’t know how it happened, if you died in a blaze of glory or in some backwater part of the city. All I hope is that you’re at some mile high club in the sky, laying back with a martini. You deserve it. I’ll make sure no one else gets hurt, pops.”
“Michael Hoxworth” Cold-Hearted Asshole | Tape 5
“Heh, I don’t even know why I’m dedicating a tape to you. You’ve always been a cold bastard since I’ve known you and even more-so after my enlistment. You deserved death, especially after what I’ve heard from those who came back. I’m glad no one knows what happened to you besides those who survived, you don’t deserve a proper send off. I hope you’re half-eaten by an Antlion while the rest of you rots.”
“Roy Jackson” Resident Dumbass | Tape 6
“I’ve known you since February during the shift where we were sent to the outskirts of City Twenty-Four. We were at the very least acquaintances, but now I see you as a royal fuck up. You tried to take apart a HUNTER CHOPPER-“
He immediately shuts up, glancing around the room after briefly shouting. Oliver waited a few minutes before resuming, albeit much quietly.
“A fucking Hunter Chopper that still had grenades stocked in it. You put us at risk and my two day employment at risk. Fuck you, I hope you’re dead in a ditch.”
“DEFENDER-1” Sir Chatterbox | Tape 7
“You are one hilarious mother fucker. We both were enlisted on the same day. Me and you against the world, I’ve got your back just as you have mine. I’m afraid that blabberbox of you will get you hurt one day, or worse. Stay safe now, don’t become a one-off “deserviced unit”.”
“GRID-2” Goonery Lead | Tape 8
“Even though I didn’t know who you were at first, I could recognize that you had some ties to the CWU at some point or another. I could just feel it. Obviously now I know, I never forget a face and after seeing yours I know who you are. Well, you did also tell me that your assessment form was pending while I was still in my civies, so putting the pieces together wasn’t hard.
Even though you’ll probably never listen to these tapes, I just want to say thank you. You’ve been someone I could lean on when I didn’t know what the fuck I’m doing. You’ve given me a new perspective in this hellhole and has been the main source of my knowledge so far.”
“JUDGE-1” The Devil Incarnate (Post MMR)| Tape 9
"You are one terrifying man. Practically the Devil Incarnate, but, after our discussion a few nights ago I can see why you had to become this... thing. Behind the mask and brutish facade, you're just a man with a decade and a half worth of trauma. I may have hated you, but your way of leading only made me a better unit, I see that now. You're only trying to make us better, keep us from having to endure what you had to endure and for that, I respect you."
“GRID-5” The Trusted Rank Lead | Tape 10
“By far the most approachable rank leader out of the few currently instated. You sir, know how to lead. I have no qualms with you, you only turn that evil side of you when you have to. I trust you and I think you trust me.”
“XRAY-6” The Organizer | Tape 11
“I can appreciate your efforts to organize this force. But, I don’t entirely see you trying to enforce protocol as much as your peers. Why do you sacrifice one over the other? Probably should’ve spent a little more time down in the dirt with the rest of us before ascending to rank leader, but what do I know? I’m not even a command unit, so my word means squat.”
—— POST MMR ——
“Lysa Vayre | 59” The 59th Blind Collaborator | Tape 12
“I commend your efforts to run that backwater shop in the Indignant, although that doesn’t matter much anymore now that you’re knee-deep in this life. You won’t survive long with that mentality you have, I intend on breaking you down and building you back up into someone that won’t die on their first day. You’re too soft and nice for this job.
You seem to know more than you should.”
“XRAY-7” Good Cop | Tape 13
"You're fucking hopeless. Why're you in that uniform if you're going to act like such a nice piece of shit? That isn't your job, you're an i1, why have you not accepted that?"
“JURY-12” The Cop Without a Brain | Tape 14
“You’re honestly a fucking idiot that knows no better. I will fix that when I get the chance. Like petting a fucking scanner? Are you serious? Surprised you were even let into the precinct.”
“VICTOR-8” The Cop With Potential | Tape 15
“Not much to say, but you have potential. You’ve learned much in a very short amount of time. Don’t screw it up.”
“UNION-2“ The Detective | Tape 16
"I still can't believe you're dead. It feels like it was almost yesterday you were solving crimes and digging up what those terrorists buried. I aspire to be like you, be better than you. But I understand that I have very big shoes to fill. It's funny, XRAY-6 mistakened me for you. Not sure how or why, but it feels odd. Odd in the sense that I don't feel like I should be mistakened for someone who was obviously worth much more than myself. It's whatever, hope that wherever you are, you're comfortable."
"UNION-3" The Newbie | Tape 17
"Fast learner, I respect it. Just don't crap out on me like Twelve, or VICTOR-8."
"KING-1" The Stoic Cop
"You're okay. I don't have many memories of you, but the ones I do have, you're just... quiet. Quiet and out of the way. I'll be keeping my eye on you."
After hearing a few doors open nearby, you race back to the armory. Upon entering, you look back into the locker, it seems to have a few new tapes.
"Now that I'm on the other side of the coin, I can see how this job can have an effect on everyone, including myself. I can see why they act the way they do toward the populous, lots of them are missing half a brain. It humanizes them, in a sense, and I feel at home. All of us were here to get out of a horrible spot, only to be put in a worse spot. I'm sure I'll get over the feeling of walking on eggshells around certain people... eventually."
"Overwatch Transhuman Arm"
"Even in this job, you lot are absurdly terrifying. You all are the furthest as you can get from humanity, mindless machines. I never know when you any of you are going to shoot or punch me on a dime. There's nothing but a strange aura around you all.
"Combine Civil Administration"
"I hate politics and bureaucrats."
"The Common People / Citizens"
"I was one of you not that long ago. I can sympathize with all of you, just don't cross me and I won't cross you."
"Loyalists"
"There is zero quality control for the party. You're either someone with a stick so far up their ass they can't see past it, or a damned rebel in disguise. I can't trust any of you and absolutely despise most of you. 'Glory' my fucking ass."
"The Resistance"
"I can respect your futile attempts to overthrow the Combine, but can you not kill my friends in the process or destroy critical infrastructure? They had no involvement with the Administration, they were just trying to get out of a rut even if it meant helping them even slightly. Killing them serves no purpose, and non-sensical destruction only wastes resources."
"The Liberation Front Coalition"
"I'm coming for you all. Get out of my city."
"The French"
"Always thought Heartwick just had a vendetta, but now you come to my city and trash it to hell? Don't let me come across you, you'll surely regret it."

To think, it was just some Infestation Control shift that devolved into chaos and disarray. Just a one-and-done deal. Should've known it wouldn't be that easy. I still remember the screams of the workers around me, the fire surrounding me, and the gunshots. Ugh, the gunshots. The ones I work with falling right beside me to some fuckin' rat in the sewers. I had to abandon them... and... shit man. I should've died right next to them... but I didn't. Why can't I die properly? Just need to get another memory replacement. Yeah, that'll help me. Better than booze and shooting up some rave at least. Just need to get another memory replacement.
