Six
Oh
Nine

It is less painful to let the wounds of the past fester than to bear witness to them in full.

Little rats scurry at my feet. I shoo them away, but more and more return, ravenous.

Fitting. I was always focused on symmetricality. Oh, how my mother hated it. I say..- hate, but I knew it was not so. Her annoyances, real as they were, still shadowed under a smile. The sound of curled lips.

She would come home from ‘work’ exasperated, and see the salt and pepper shakers crowned like kings at each end of the table, as though commanders before a large battle. My father and I would play Knights. The tins were the soldiers. I would insist that I set the table. My father would always fail to do so in the most minute of ways. I think he was giving me something to do. To feel in control.

Les Gardes Magnifique, father called them. Chevaliers Haricot
and pomme,
serving under Regents Noir and Blanc.

My mother liked that. She would see us at the table, and bemoan our mess, then help clean it, if our game had concluded. She always said it helped take her mind from work.

..She hated her work. I know it was not alike her faux-disparaging huffs toward my Father’s games. It was deeper, more vitriolic. She would speak to my father in hushed whispers at the sharp edges of midnight while my Sister and I pretended to sleep.

I do not know what angered her so, but I wished to never learn of it. I am glad I did not.

The crunch below my boots is one of two things. Gravel, or Teeth. I dare not look down.

A dream of a life that might have been. I do not know why I detest it so.

I look into mirrors and see a woman I barely recognize. Her Father's eyes are dulled, and her Mother's skin is sickly, and pale. I do not believe she can recognize me, either. It has only been two months. Surely I would see more resemblance. I do not think highly of my time before this. Memories of my home never feature my mother. I still do not know why.

Happy, they all are. Alive. Abeline is safe within the Echelon facilities. Father, in the Homelands. Even mother...- though.. some things make..- less sense than they should, but I am far more interested in maintaining my position here than 'stirring the pot.' To take a life is.. routine, here. The deaths of.. those poor, parasitized souls still weigh on me heavily, but they are not the sole victims of our forced brutality.

This place is filled with killers. I have.. not yet had to take a life, a real life, one unbeset by monsters from another world— and I fear the day I am told to do so.

My blood will bid me to decline, yet for their safety, I will not.

I will fear the total number of lives exchanged for theirs.

I pray I will never see it.

My boots' treads have become caked with ash and meat.

I do not wish to turn them over, lest I risk seeing the tendons still flex, and move.

Time has passed. Of course it has. An ever-moving, steady march.

I have attempted, in the past, to avoid making acquaintanceships. I wanted to be distanced. I had thought it would look better for my file. I realize that it had only led to me watching those who I would have enjoyed to know more, die before being able to do so.

I do not know if I am better off, or worse, in that pursuit.

I have returned to the garrison of which I trained with. Across the lake, nestled neatly in the city of flesh. The.. squelching, is constant. Tumors hang from the sides of buildings a hundred stories tall, jostling alike a cruel spider's egg sac. Desperate to split open and rain its sick brood upon us all.

The training that has been provided during my service has helped. I fear the day I am called upon to defuse a bomb.
