The Individual
Klaus Heiskanen, the tall Finnish Strongarm of the Engineering Department within the Civil Workers Union. A stubborn man infatuated with strength, discipline, and productivity; all collectively stroking the egotistical personality housed within the shiny bald head protected by his trusty hardhat. An individual who cares about selfdom, yet quietly chooses to betray his individualism through conformity and blissful ignorance. Disregarding the pathetic politics and bickering bureaucracy that bring forward dangers to society with each passing day; as Ministry of Commerce openly discriminates and undermines the working class through control of food distribution, exploitation, and wage deductions. In contrast, the matters of self-care and keeping a healthy lifestyle speak far greater volumes to Klaus, as he chooses to scrutinise the addictive smoking habit of Vanessa Lee and the alcoholic tendencies of Ashley Valera.

Eggheads within Management
"I think Management is funny sometimes. It is a bunch of weak and limp eggheads with white hardhats; that think power comes from a position of authority rather than loyalty from the workforce. I think this shows through their futile attempts at leadership, as fellow workers disregard orders and run away like chicken from responsibility. Unless it is Jamie Makin that speaks to the masses; a man that knows how to earn and secure loyalty from the workforce through selfless acts."

Joining the Engineers
"I am happy that Makin gave me a chance to prove my worth in the Engineering Department. There is a lot of improvisation involved in tinkering which makes you look like a professional in front of people- if they only knew how fragile and rusted the infrastructure is around them. Yet I find great satisfaction in knowing that you can fix a small thing and make a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of people."

The Cruel World
Collaboration is Murder
"I- I cannot comprehend what happened that day. Whether I am a murderer, or maybe an accomplice of a murder? Maybe both? I thought I was doing a good thing by tackling the man and restraining them from running out into the Outlands. Why would anyone even attempt to leave the safe confines of the city? Was it better to ignore the bystander and kept quiet- to let them run to their own suicidal demise?

I can still hear the sound of the gunshot; the thud of the collapsing body against the pavement. I can still see the blood stain on the wall; the lifeless body beside it. I cannot do anything about it- regardless how many hours, days or months pass. I cannot move past it! I don't know whether I can walk the same tunnels again with this guilt which seems to be getting worse with each passing day. To be rewarded with social points for this act is sickening- is this what it means to be a collaborator?."

Near-Death Experience
"I had no prior experience in fighting the infestation despite my certification in the field. We lacked experienced manpower and adequate equipment to deal with the lethal and dangerous Thanatos infestation in the theatre- but it was said the job had to be done. I suppose it was no shock when the realisation hit that everything was going to shit. That I would end up being shot three times in the chest by the soldiers amidst the crossfire and flop on the ground like a suffocating fish. I felt increasingly delirious and restless as the hazmat suit I was wearing slowly flooded with the warm wine-red blood from my wounds. To see my colleagues squabble around me to pull me away from the scene to allocate space and replace me like a rusted gear in a machine felt like I was near the end of my life cycle- it was heartbreaking.

The realisation only hit harder when I woke up in the clinic after a couple days, as I was hastily discharged by the doctors in the effort to vacate more bedding for the other victims of this infestation. I was barely able to walk with the pain in the chest; the lack of painkillers made it harder to breathe. Yet Idris Osmond, perhaps out of desperation, still found the time to bark out orders and demanded assistance in barricading the local streets despite being injured himself. I guess we are all a bunch of gears regardless of our condition; ticking away in a massive machine for as long as possible before inevitably popping off."
