Hello.
This post is just here to give an explanation of what the Void is and why its usage is no longer allowed in Events nor to be used by any character in the game. If you have been playing or keeping up with Short Stories: The Long Haul, you may know the Void as some empty and infinite dark space that effectively allowed the group to travel through time and go through different dimensions, but was used to get the group from point A to B with the usage of a time skip represented by the use of what is known as "Time Dilation". This has been a massive contradiction of the Voids lore and completely destroyed what it was meant to be... nor was it intended to be used in the first place by anyone nor anything.
Thus as of recent, the Lore Team and Community Management have made the executive decision to cut out the Void from ever being referred to and thus been retconned from Short Stories lore. So now to get into what the Void actually is... with minor additions by @RedHotGinger to change up the Void a bit.
I am mainly putting this here for the sake of event creators to not refer to the Void like what happened in Short Stories and this is to also help understand what the Void is and why we do not use it in our public Lore.
Beyond Earth... beyond the galaxy of humanity, beyond the dimensions, Xen and the Combine exists a vast and infinite realm filled with many differing thoughts, feelings, and opinions, all drifting amongst themselves for eternity, lost in this dark realm with no living creature to speak of. It is a realm made purely of energy and nothing else... the idea of physics does not apply here... nor do many other known laws such as motion, gravity, time, etc... not even any form of liquid to be found, gas to be found nor solid objects to be found anywhere... just pure energy in the form of thoughts. The void is composed only of these thoughts and the currency of its thinkers. Endless neuronic entities that once filled its bustling meta-physical halls with songs of enlightenment and endless progress.
It exists beyond all universes, yet it is both still connected while being independent. It has no end... but neither does it have a beginning. It is not a border world of that akin to Xen and thus does not exist between worlds, but instead persists and lingers as a monument of a dead forgotten past - floating in the helpless, chaotic dark. Things weren't always this way... for the void was once ruled by order - but that order grew and took hold of those who once ruled before. You could say the Void was once inhabited, had life to speak off in a colorful world, but such is no longer the case. Porous thoughts leak both in and out of the materium. It is not owned by its old rulers... no one does. Can anyone even own it... no, they can't anymore, not even enter it.
The void is stuck between the line of existent and non-existent. One could say it exists simply because of its presence, how it is always around if it doesn't exist? While others would say there is nothing to prove its existence as no one can enter it... it is also the realm where nothing can exist, defying all rules of reality. It is a contradiction among the multi-verse. Many claim it exists, yet no one can ever visit it to confirm... such a task is impossible. For what the Void once was in the past... no longer exists; save for its memories. Memories, thoughts, and beliefs holding together the translucent fabric of a long-dead place of the living now perished. IT rests not between worlds, nor within them. It rests without them, together and apart. You can not see it, you can not understand. The conquest of the undeath and stale life is long complete. Only sorrow permeates across these dark mistified remnants of an unspeakable among of thoughts; creating an unfathomable and chaotic world - that of which... you will never get a chance to see.
But what about the almighty Vortiguants? Can they see or access this realm... the short answer is No. The Long answer however holds one unspeakable truth... the 3 Grand Elders of this species are aware of the Void's existence but do not fully understand its complexities themselves. For over an unfathomable amount of years spent looking into and learning about the Void... the Grand Elders are no closer to discovering its mysteries, leaving them to speculate. Speculate in a way that passes down some "Stories" written about the Void by the Grand Elders themselves. These stories can be equated to rumors or something akin to folklore or religious texts just like how Humans came up with the idea of Gods, Heaven and Hell. But even with the Grand Elders understanding, they do keep some potential info about this realm away from their own kind... the stories they made only tell one good enough to make Vorts over believe in the Void and acknowledge its existence as a religious icon, but nothing near the Grand Elders knowledge or their speculations.
While the Grand Elders may not know much about the Void, its existence, origins, and overall influence and power. They know enough that it is best that the Void remained untouched, undisturbed, and kept away from prying eyes... especially those of the Combine. One way they choose to do this was to hide some things from their own kind and to make the Void seem nothing more than a religious superstition like Gods are to Humans while still being believable and keeping others from attempting to search for the truth on their own.
NOTE: Anyone who dares to attempt to touch or even enter the Void will be erased from existence from an in-world standpoint. No physical matter can exist within this realm as written 3-4 years ago by me (@Robert) back in TelsaCloud. It later had to retconned in SS due to misuse and contradiction in its hidden lore about no one being able to visit it and thus that part had to be scrapped for the sake of sanity.
Overall, it is impossible to use the Void as it is for any story, lore (unless you are a Vort), or in-game event/action. So DO NOT use it.
If you do wish to use the Void, please contact either the Lore Team or Community Management in order to use it. If you wish to change the Lore of the Void then please contact the Community Management in order to do so.
