One can only wonder what a dying mans last moments are truly like. Are they filled with sadness and grief? Bitterness and anger? Do they wonder whether or not they could've done something different? Of course, it's hard to know without being on death's door yourself, and it just so happens that Bernette was in a position to find out once and for all...

The threads of silence are broken by an approaching barrage of rounds. Quickly vaulting behind cover, Bernette unloads his magazine into the attacker, but alas, he simply wasn't fast enough. A single quick gaze to the left confirms: his rebel buddy already has him in his sights. From there on, it's a rigged game, there was simply nothing else he could've done.

Dropping to the ground, Bernette quickly glances on his body. Multiple bullet holes show themselves, quickly filling with blood. He gazes up on the ceiling, realizing he can't feel his rifle, nor his arms. A creeping realization kicks in, he isn't gonna make it out of here. He tries to find... something. A loophole of sorts, a glimmer of hope. But nothing shows itself: this situation is simply inescapable.

Still riling from the pain, he tries to focus, but it's pointless. His mind jumps back and forward, as if he has to think just for the sake of it, to use his last free moments of still being alive. Eventually, Bernette starts remembering everything that has led him to this point: the truce, the dam, the war, the 24th...

As if on a roller coaster of memories, he rides past everything and everyone that he felt was worth reminiscing about.

He's our Vex, and seems to be more than capable at his job. As such, I'm ready to follow whatever orders he has.

Sorry Vex, I wish I was a better soldier...
Smith
We didn't really talk before we got deployed, but now that we did, you seem like a really good guy. Surprised you keep up my with bullshit.

Guess you were wrong, I did have reason to worry...
Aalto
We didn't really get along together, but I hope you realize that the things I've been saying were just jokes.

Remember that time you told me you'd be laughing at my bleeding corpse? Now's your time...
Brown
I may not show it, but I really do look up to you. You saved my skin at least once, and were helpful multiple times. Shame you aren't here as much, I'd love to make you proud.

I guess I'll never get to hand you your jacket back in person. Shame...
Chamberlain
I hope the others won't get jealous, but I'd say you're one of the best of us when it comes down to fighting and surviving. Hopefully you won't die by friendly fire.

You were right, desperate people do desperate things. Should've listened more carefully...
Crack:
We may have gotten on the wrong foot in the City, but that doesn't mean anything now. We may not talk often, but I respect you as a comrade nonetheless.

Now that I think about it... Did you even remember me? Maybe that's for the better...
Valentine
Who would've thought we'd end up in this mess, huh? Well, whatever future may hold for us, I hope we both make it out. We still got a fashion dispute to settle.

Y
ou did your best. I just hope you won't think this is your fault somehow...
Somerset
Alright guy, what is there to really say?

Figure yourself lucky, you get the whole bunk bed now...
Taylor
We didn't really talk, but I'm sure you're alright.

I wonder if you'll ever remember about me. Probably not...
Nickel
You would never think that you and a random stranger on the street walk the same path, but here we are. You make a pretty good Nominal, lets hope it's only a taste of things to come.

Fortunately you won't have to explain to command how I died...
Isakov
You seem ready to fight. That's a good thing, if you ask me.

Hope you'll keep me in your prayers...
Maxwell
Honestly, I have a hard time remembering you. I don't think we talked at all.

Guy died a hero, wish I could've said the same for myself...
Zal'Tra
I hope you're doing fine back in the city. I wonder if you'll be angry at me for harming your kin.

If it brings you any comfort, know that your brothers here gave memore respect than my own people...
Puritano
An idiot. But he's our idiot. I just hope he doesn't do something stupid while on the battlefield.

Goddamn, I didn't think he'd outlive me. Survival of the fittest...
Pickles
Worked on a shift with him, thought he was annoying as hell. Now that he's here... I still think he's annoying as hell. But that's fine, really.

I can only hope that you died bravely, least one can do here...
Elias
I don't think I ever told you of my deployment. But I'm sure you'll be happy once I give you the news of my return.

I guess it was for the best, now you'll never know if I'm alive or not...
Fedorov
I still remember that match. Loosing to me and Valentine like that... Guess it wasn't your day, huh? I wonder why you aren't here, I'm sure you'd kick the N.R.A.U.'s asses to kingdom come.

Guess it was a good thing. You avoided my fate...
Al-Ali
Never thought I'd get all buddy-buddy with the 125th, but here we are. Wish you luck along with the rest of your unit.

To be the last alive out of the entire division must surely be a curse. I hope you won't blame yourself for it too much...

Bernette remembers each time he told people he simply didn't find much meaning in his life, joking about his eventual demise. So many times that he imagined sacrificing himself for others, or simply taking as many rebels as he could with him. But now all these things seem like a sick joke. Perhaps that's what they always were.

In this moment, Bernette doesn't want to die, and this realization screams loud in his mind. "Shit, I don't want to die. I want to go back home," he thinks to himself, trying to mutter the same in his physical, bleeding form, only managing to whisper the first two words before loosing his strength. "Home? Where is home?" He thinks to himself one last time, before his mind finally gives up...
