- THE HISTORY -

khabarovsk2.png

A baby was born on a particularly cold Khabarovsk night in the 3rd of September 1945, a mere day after the Empire of Japan's official surrender to the Allies. His mother and father were both present - A rarity in that day and age, especially considering his birth was not planned in the slightest. They named him Mikhail, from the greek "like God", for reasons he would never end up knowing. He had a rather poor upbringing, his mother Daria forced to toil in the factories for the family's sustenance in place of the father, Maksim, who took as much care of baby Mikky as he possibly could.

Although his birth was unexpected, his father, who had suffered a particularly grievous spinal injury from an explosion during the War, made sure to teach him the basics of writing and maths, even enrolling him in public school, all the while planting on his young mind a particular idea: That the World's "Great Leaders" are not always right. The domestic situation was not always perfect, as Daria held a great deal of unspoken hard feelings towards her husband, and as such Mikhal what time he had left in his days outside, reading and exploring- Though he was a rather reclusive child, choosing to observe rather than outright engage with those of his age. His father's tuturship resulted in them becoming rather close during his earlier years.

In 1963, three years after his father's death due to the crushing famines of the latter Kruschev period, Mikhail was enrolling in the recently founded Pacific National University in their engineering course. He proved a rather attentive student by natuWre, though his academic pursuits were severely hampered by his mother's decaying health at home. During these years, he learned of his father's extramarital activities, and the incident which caused his injury, both of which caused a damning loss of respect for his late father, and a newfound appreciation and respect for what Daria had to endure. He made sure to care for her daily until her death four years later, and a year after that made his way out of Khabarovsk to find his way in the wider world.

Mikhail made his way down south to the growing metropolis of Vladivostok, intent on finding his own nook to call home. During his time working in factories as a production specialist, he became fast friends with his co-worker and engineering master Sergey Koychev, a stern and calculating man with an impulsive nature and, as he would eventually discover, a hidden soft side. Their friendship made both their jobs easier, and the two developed quite the tales to tell from their time together.

During the 70's, the Soviet workforce was rather undisciplined and work-shy, though Roshkov attempted to increase their workshift attendance by organizing employee parties at the end of each week. During one of his many outings, he came across a young aspiring anti-soviet columnist by the name of Anastasiya. A hard-working, tenacious woman born in the city proper, Roshkov and she became fast friends, going on escapades across the countryside in his Fiat 124, discussing the World, their country and rulers, and eventually developing feelings for eachother. These only deepened throughout the years, with them moving in together in 1971, and him proposing two years later.

Mikhail had his first child, Viktor, in 1980. Six years later, Alexandra is born two days before the Chernobyl nuclear power plant incident. Back-and-forth shifts in political, economic and social reforms and an unending war in Afghanistan has the Soviet populace in utter discontent at their regime, and Mikhail's life partner is beginning to show her firebrand side, delving into the previously unknown horrors of Stalin's purges, the gulags and his treaty with Hitler forty years prior. The relatively relaxed Glasnost period meant she managed to gain some prominence as a local writer and historian. The automobile factory's ownership gained immense wealth from political maneuvering in the years prior to Gorbachev's demise, meaning a new position as production manager for Roshkov. The couple enjoyed somewhat of a golden age during the post-soviet restructuring period, raising their children to be critical thinkers such as themselves.

In 1998, Anastasiya is diagnosed with an untreatable lung disease. She spends her last months in peace, surrounded by friends and her family. Mikhail is deeply affected by her departure and his son Viktor, a lowly employee at his father's workplace, chooses to leave entirely to pursue a different life in Moscow, driving Roshkov into an alcohol-fueled, deep depression. Alexandra chooses not to leave her father behind and stays, pursuing an education of her own in Economics until...

The portal storms of 2001 had Mikhail waking with screams from his panicked daughter. Though the city was mostly unaffected, he worried immensely for the fate of his son, knowing of the severe drafting in Moscow to keep the deadly alien horrors at bay- However, he could never have foreseen the far-reaching consequences of humanity's actions.
The city itself was rather unprepared for the Combine's arrival, seeing rapid troop movement in attempt to secure it, yet to no avail. Stripped of their possessions and hurried to the nearest relocation center, he and his daughter feared the worst.

In the newly created Terminal Seven, the masses were separated for their different utility in the eyes of the Union. As such, they were quickly separated to different population centers, as was the norm with family members to preserve cohesion. Alexandra's fate was unknown- He was headed to forty-five to enroll in the newly established industrial programs. A downtrodden, hopeless Mikhail was all that the Zone Managers saw at the time, and he remained at the lowly rank of Worker for a couple of years, all the while drinking himself to near-death on several occasions, racking up multiple violations. However, one day, hope surged...

Mikhail was contacted by none other than his best friend Sergey, in hopes of making use of the desperate man. The former engineer, now an ESIC specialist, informed Mike of the organisation's goals and ambitions, seeking to further them with his inside help in the Civil Workers Union. He also told him of his son's fate- An ESIC operative, awaiting their ultimate push on the city center. A newfound will emerged from the cossack, a will to see his family again, to see them whole once more- And so, he worked. He toiled, and pushed, and perservered under heavy heat, scrutiny from Civil Protection, and the lack of rations resultant of ESIC strikes. Until one day- Their goal was finally furthered.

His son contacted him first, accompanied by Sergey, instructing him to cut the power on the Civil Workers Union warehouse and to evacuate the workers. Mikhail staged a fire, no doubt saving countless lives that day, as the factory was soon raided and utterly demolished by ESIC forces in the attacks of 2007-8. However, the desperate attacks by the rebel organization became more and more destructive by the day. After the canals were shelled to destruction by headcrab canisters, the city suffered an unprecedented blow as antlions and ESIC forces scoured the streets, and the ultimate solution was deployed by the Combine. Mikhail left in one of the last trains out, realizing what he had become a part of in horrified tears as the populous megalopolis of Bangladesh was reduced to nothing more than a smoldering crater on the ground, his son and best friend likely along with it.

Mikhail was dragged along throughout several major population centers. He remained in the decently safe City 3 for five years, managing to make contact and join up with a semi-established network of underground materiel smugglers, before a forced relocation for production duties at Industrial 46. There he toiled, though despising his post and co-workers for their lack of work ethic and willingness to sacrifice the common folk. He applied for relocation several grueling times before being accepted and shipped off to Terminal Six for reassessment in January 2017, narrowly avoiding the rumored massacre a mere month later. After a 2-year interrim position at City 24's small industrial sector, he suffered another forced relocation- This time to join the industrial workers under the heavy smog of Industrial 24.

The elder Roshkov sought to find his one remaining family member, Alexandra. To this end, he founded a small coallition of like-minded individuals, all intent on helping the downtrodden and themselves find better lives, by any means necessary. Forging many friendships both at work and outside, Mike was clearly seeking to expand his grip on the industrial sector, and working quite hard to achieve this goal, before a forced relocation to city eight and then once again to Terminal Six, his old homeland of Vladivostok.

Citizens

"The cogs in the ugly machine, everyday men and women yearning for something more, paired with some of the most dangerous lunatics out there,
all bunched up into several cramped housing complexes and a rarely patrolled construction zone... What could go wrong?"

Civil Workers Union

"I now understand most of you have seen and heard enough to understand this - All we can do is protect each other, no matter what."

Civil Medical & Research Union

"You have saved my life before, and I know you will end up doing it again and again, for me and for all of us. A cause worthy of respect.
The Research Department, however, concerns me greatly, knowing of those who work there, their goals, and ambitions."

Loyalists

"Mostly just traitors towards their own species, willing to stab each other in the back for slightly better treatment from an oppressive regime."

Civil Protection

"At best a bunch of brutes and incompetent, misguided fools. At worst a breeding ground for self-righteous psychopaths."

Comittee of Civic Duty and Engagement

"The ultimate choice if you wish to rise up in the Union's loyalty tiers, while indulging your pretentious self in grandiose speeches and utterly pointless meetings.
Not too different from the politicians of old, but considering humanity's situation... A depressing ordeal, indeed."

Combine Civil Administration

"A horrid bunch. Bureaucrats, politicians and pawns all elevated to their utmost potential as slaves to the regime.
Why one would choose to go down their path of eternal, unwavering submission is beyond me..."

Vortigaunts

"A semi-hive mind, alien species, forcefully enslaved just as our own. Though their younglings are somewhat brutish, all of them share our desire for freedom.
Their elders have aided me greatly, and provided me with visions of the future beyond my wildest imaginations."

Overwatch Transhuman Arm

"The terrifying, dehumanizing end that awaits all of us if we fail in our duties. May your souls rest easy."

- CIVIL WORKERS & LOYALISTS -

The Manager

"Jamie, I often wish I had you working under me back in the factories of Vladivostok.
Then I think about it, and I come to the conclusion that you would likely have taken my place as manager!
After some bastard lobotomized you, I was not surprised to find out how your story ended- Saving the city, like always.
You shall be honored, friend. And eventually - avenged."

The Shield

"Wim, the factory's shield and my own. Everyone loves this gentle giant, and I can't blame them after he vouched for my ascension!
The way you keep so close to Valera- I can't wait to see what you two have been working on."

The Industrious

"You burst into the Workers Union out of nowhere and climbed the ranks faster than anyone I've ever seen. After that you left, and have been with those researchers ever since. The question remains, Samuel- Are you a master, or a pawn?"

The Employer

"Valera handled my employment when I first arrived, she has taught me the ins and outs and ensured my steady career and status progression.
I thank her for believing in me since the very start, and showing a nowadays rare concern about the city and its citizens.
She deserves her spot at the top, no matter what everyone says about us civil workers."

The Confidant

"Sophie was always a promising young woman back in twenty-four, though I never knew just how devoted she was until a particular incident occured in the Valley. A trustworthy young woman and an above average worker. She'll make it far.

The Director

"Varos, the Zone Director, is a man to look out for. A perfectly oiled cog in the machine, he performed his duties unwaveringly, seeking to further the goals of our Workers Union. He was honest with me about what he thought the future held, and for that I am grateful. I know what you and Makin did, Varos. And I hope you are at least out there, somewhere, still working hard to keep the workers safe as ever."

The Sanctimonious

"Jindosh has a green armband, a stern demeanor and a killer moustache. His holier-than-thou attitude gets on my nerves sometimes.
Why the hell would you refuse a full cycle of rewards for being shot accidentally? Nevertheless, it's good to see a fellow elder finally enjoy retirement."

The Gourmand

"Joe was a big, round ball of enthusiastic worker goodness.
It was always good to see his cheerful self stomping around the warehouse, yet he disappeared for good since our last relocation."

The Liability

"Vanessa. Your work cycles were dumb and unproductive, even if sometimes fun. You took it too far once you had people butchering vortigaunts.
I hope you can atone for your sins, wherever the hell they sent you to next, and I pray we never meet again."

The Chairman

"Xiao, there isn't much left unsaid. I voted because I trusted in you and your plan.
Alas, you truly were too good for this world, and the small minds among us."

The Chairwoman

A despicable abomination of a "civil representative", someone who has absolutely no idea what they're doing and yet prances about demanding the utmost respect from everyone. Juniper was behind some amazing contributions to occupied society, such as making up rumors about my vending machine, sending citizens to their death in the form of a sanctioned public militia, and failing so hard at her job that I got tortured and almost killed for suspected association with counterfeit newspapers. A bumbling buffoon and a dangerous liability.

The Rastamon

"Idris, Rasta... Damian Osmond. The man who saved my life back when I first arrived has many names, and I count him amongst my most loyal and trusted. We have shared many a tale, from our enrollment in the Worker's Union together to the day I lost my eye. We remain fast friends and work together closely to improve our glorious Workers Union into what it can truly become - A beacon of hope for the remnants of humanity."

- CITIZENRY & UNDERGROUND -

The Inheritor

"Violet, I watched intently as you learned all you could from our mutual friend, all while growing more and more reliant on your discretion, decision-making and ideas. You showed much progress, and without a doubt proved to be one of our top operatives, before vanishing without a trace since industrial twenty-four. A shame, and another good man gone missing."

The Space Cadet

"A young man who knows how to get things done, and clearly revolutionary through and through. Through disagreements, triumphs, and loss, I have come to rely on Sniffy as much as I relied on our mutual friend. The question remains, will you be sober enough to witness the birth of a new Age?"

The Cloak and Dagger

"You're one of the few that has yet to be compromised from our friend's recruitment drives, and you remain a steadfast ally to the cause even today.
You are a trusted comrade,
Alex, let's just make sure a breakout like that never has to happen again."

The Hothead

"VADIMA, YOU FOOL! I bet you heard that a lot. You were a rash decision-maker, though I felt your heart in the right place.
It is a shame you went missing since that disaster in twenty-four, and I never heard anything from you ever again."

The Iron Lady

"Sophia, your young mind should never have been put through this much hardship and struggle- And yet, you endured. The reason why still evades me.
Perhaps due to loyalty, perhaps due to fear... I shall never know, for you disappeared along with the others. I hope you're still out there."

The Audacious

"Your exploits were truly something to behold, even if cut short by your decision to antagonize everyone.
I have kept your ID as a reminder,
Winston, and I truly do hope you at least made it to somewhere safe."

The Smiling Enigma

"O-Dog, the friendly neighborhood barman. Your entrepreneurial grip reaches farther and farther with each sale and acquisition, but how far exactly?
A good question, and one left unanswered still. You prove yourself continuously useful to the citizenry, the movement and the Workers Union.
Clearly a master of his art, who often reminds me of many former allies."

The Lost Healer

"Dr. Vix, the people's doctor. A kind soul with a penchant for medicine.
Too bad she got lost along with everyone else in twenty-four. Good luck."

The Cursed Devotee

"Though a more recent acquaintance, Kompot has proved himself reliable and discrete.
A dying, depressed man, yet always willing to stand for those he believes in.
I truly hope this undying loyalty doesn't lead to his doom.

The Cyclops

"One-Eye, a mercenary for the Lone Dogs, and one I am particularly fond of.
He has helped me time and again, with information as well as resources.
I hope he keeps well away from harm, as he'd be a serious loss to us all.

The Reluctant Head

"Badger is a man who claims to be a very poor fit for a leader, even though all of his Lone Dog mercs tell me he's a top-notch guy.
I have enjoyed my sparse conversations with him, and encouraged him to keep his chin up.
His boys trust him, and that's all that matters.

The Boozer

"Fixer was a man whom I briefly encountered in the Valley - He touched my soul with his story of loss and regret.
He was taken too soon, on account of rash decisions made by third parties."

The Daredevil

"Mowgli, or whatever his name was. An impetuous child who was no doubt one of the worst influences on Sniffy's life.
His impatience and brash decision-making led to his and Fixer's deaths at the hands of some Sentinel. The sad death of an idiot."

The Instigator

"Outrider, you have no doubt proven your loyalty to the cause, and formed a formidable group of likeminded freedom fighters. Your far-reaching presence is felt across every city you choose to inhabit, though certain actions taken by your members in recent times have worried me."

The Chocolate Man

"Kirill, Toblerone. You saw the endless possibilities of the Workshop and turned it into something even greater. I often think of the conversations we never had, the gratitude I never expressed to you, for finding out where my daughter was, and giving my life purpose once more.
You may have been a fighter at heart, and our relationship strictly professional at first- But I considered you a true friend,
Zapada.
Your legacy lives on. До скорого."

- THE OTHERWORLDLY -

The Tale-Teller

"The Teller of Tales, an elder of the vortigaunts, or so it seems by the long speeches he so often indulges me in. He was the one who englightened me on the Ultimate's existance, his goals and ambitions, and ultimately responsible for strengthening my resolve against the alien menace. He has apparently become "coterminous", though I cannot wrap my head around the significance of the term. Nevertheless, congratulations! I suppose."

The Worm

"Can you hear it on the radio? Their voices, calling out for help..."

Vladivostok calling.
Eastern Harbor calling.
Pyongyang responds with a ladylike smile. The Eternal Motherland sends its greetings to the old bear stuck in port.
I think of you often, old Russian grandfather. Sometimes I wonder how you haven't been liquidated yet. You remember the past well, unlike the infants in jumpsuits that frequent my city nowadays.

I watch the water and I await your order to set me free.
