Short (or detailed) character backstory:
Sletislava'Aang was first created in xen, and from it's inception had an interest in the macabre. Savage vortigaunts peaked the interest of the v at a young, providing opportunities for knowledge most of their peers would rather avoid. After dipping their toes in dark knowledge Ang quickly found itself committed to rituals a rational being knew were best to avoid.
Aang was experimenting on a corpse of another vortigaunt - one not slain by it's hand but slain nonetheless. In a dark haze of the vortigaunt chanting alone the creature became overpowered by a sudden, electric shock than jumped up it's spine and knocked him unconscious. When the vortigaunt awoke, the corpse next to it had flittered its eyes open too - and both of them were Aang - and neither of them quite knew which was the copy.
Knowing better than to fear the unknown, both of the Aang's immediate reaction was of curiosity. Their movements mirrored - their voices in unison. Over the coming weeks they analysed eachother, looking for any flaws in the split consciousness, but none came. As time passed, the two agreed that they needed names to differentiate themselves by. Over the course of the next hundreds of years they have stayed at eachother's side, and even through Combine occupation they remained toiling at what other vortigaunts would rather leave unseen.
