Obligatory OTA complaint thread (the sequel)

They did their job as a player for attacking and they get punished for it. I won’t except rebels to attack anymore, end of story for that part.

What about the numerous other times rebels have attacked and won? Where were the complaints when 12 rebels and 3 vorts steamrolled the checkpoint and the cops and got away with only one person downed? Why should every single bit of retaliation be possible to defeat and easily metagamed because you know exactly the force you can expect?

Here's a harsh truth about HL2RP as a whole and I say this as a former rebel main myself:

Unless you have a free equipment/gun vendor, rebels are never going to do much themselves. They're going to get coddled and nudged to encourage them which comes at the expense of any-and-all retaliation being deemed as unfair.

This is not something you want because it leads to resentment, feeling like punching bags and OOC beef. This sort of thread, with these sorts of comments, contribute to exactly that.

There was a complaint by the OTA - the OTA got buffed from SMGs only to pulse rifles. This isn't the first time that the rebels attacked the underground CP-1; there was no 3 squad sweep by the OTA 24 hours later. I'm not saying there shouldn't be retaliation but it should be a fair fight I'd say - not 3 squads worth against people in the sewers who may or may not known about said attack on CP-1.

I say impossible odds are fair when there is an uprising going on, not a sewer sweep. For metagaming, realistically, it is hard to clamp down on Meta if players are smart about it.

Well, yes and no. Expeditions can bring around good equipment for a group which can help nudge said group to do any anti-civil activities. If it was a one squad sweep, it wouldn't be deemed unfair - it'd be fair. But never a 3 squad have ever been deployed for something that happened in the sewers until now. I can't see rebels wanting to attack if the retaliation is 3 squads of Overwatch with 40 speed and 40 guns.

True, but last time there were the numbers to throw the OTA retaliation at them right away and (please tell me if I'm wrong) the response was mostly scripted because it was done to show them it was possible to attack this place now.

That's a lot different from a 15 man rebel battering ram breaching, getting sensitive info and snatching two cops who are now rogue. I mean major credit on the rebels for not just executing them, but y'know what I mean.

And I totally respect that, but I think this is sort of the issue? Like, the expectation is "you can always stand and fight in some capacity" so you get situations like this, where arguably a response you can't fight is justified - just to keep folks on their toes.

Except that isn't an option currently, because it is seen as unfair even with advanced warning. I think the 6-person sweeps being standard and "the law" just sets something of an unreasonable precedent s imply because if you know where that singular squad is you basically have free reign to go wherever because you know there's literally no other retaliation skulking about.

I will just clarify something.

2 squads were deployed.

Each squad was made out of 5 people.

Only one squad entered the sewers, rest was at the top.

So it wasn't really overkill since casual OTA squad is made out of 6 members

As Hiros clarified, 2 squads were only deplyed and since it was five members - the sweep was essentially a normal OTA sweep with five members. My complaint was about if it was 3 squads and all swept the sewers, however, since this is not the case; my complaint is withdrawn.

But what do you, the player think? Am I just whining? (didnt actually get affected by the sweep myself I just heard about it afterwards) Or do I bring a valid point? YOU DECIDE!!
I was caught getting out of sewers up the ladder unarmed and wearing a bandana and trying to rush to the vents I was immediately shot and chased :(, after escaping through the vent then hid in the room after the laundry room, idk if the OTA player didn't see me or faked not seeing me but I salute him from here, it was epic

Tbh it always sucks to get involved in things like that when your character hasn't done anything of the reasons why there is a sweep, but I also saw somebody in full gear aiming at somebody else in the campfire and at that point I shouldn't have gone to the sewers. It's like when someone shoots a scanner over the campfire and you know there is a chance you are going to get fucked by CP or OTA even if you didn't do it.

A lot of this is pure luck, same bad luck as going down to the sewers and getting mauled by Antlions and PK'd. There will also always be things and reactions out of the scope of your character's personal actions.

But perhaps in these cases "good faith" NLRs can be applied if they were not really after you or you didn't cause it. Idk, it's tricky.

Rebels switch from saying OTA are their toys, to saying they need to be nerfed.

Perhaps just take a loss? Combine factions take a L all the time, but one time they pull some punches and pull a win, theres complaints...

This is a civilized discussion, which is more than most threads can say

Anyways, I’m starting to see things from the other side. I do suppose OTA do need to respond to harsher climates by having better gear and such, though I still think it’s a bit weird to send fully kitted out squads to slums and sewers without so much as a vague dispatch broadcast. I think RAD-X said it well.

Rad-X was bang on imo, ironically those safest from this sweep were it's targets as I understand things.

The only thing I feel that I have to add this this discussion is the following.

Considering that data was stolen, I feel OTA involvement was justified.
However, since the sweep was 24 hours after the fact, this becomes a bit of a "meh" point.
That's just a bit of a sad reality, it is often very hard to strike back against the people who did something unless you catch them in the act or directly afterwards. I suppose this is just a rebel issue. Is a group of rebels planning to pull some shit? Make sure that after the fact, people are warned that a response is probably coming. Then again, doing that basically means admitting you did something perhaps to semi-strangers.

Considering the fact OTA had no idea if the rebels who did the CP-1 attack were online at the time, the OTA sweep might look a little like fishing. What could have been more interesting is the following.
Do a CP shadow sweep while having OTA on stand-by. And I mean literally at the gate ready to storm into the sewers or slums. If the CPs spot something that might be considered part of the CP-1 attack, ring the alarm and OTA comes and fucks shit up. If they don't find anything it's just a business as usual sweep.
This would give the CPs a role in their revenge story for the CP-1 attack, create a more interesting experience and give Rebels at least a small heads up before a group of soldiers stands in front of them. I think that solves most of the issues people have brought up here.

Regardless, I have no idea how that'd work out. Maybe the people would just flee before OTA arrived. But it would create more of an atmosphere of the OTA actually being used as a surgical force rather than throwing out a net. Though from what I saw, the people who actually got PK'd did stupid shit like wearing rebel gear in the open.

Do I think things were done wrong? You can talk about the fairness of catching an OTA sweep for something you didn't do. But the sweep was not just for the CP-1 attack so that point is a little diminished. Rebels have done Rebel gaming, and now OTA showed they're also still around. Life in the City is dangerous because you're right under the Combine's nose. It has rewards and it has risks. Perhaps the whole sweep could have happened differently, but it didn't so I cannot make a verdict on how that would have turned out.

Edit:
Apparently there was only 1 active CP at the time of the sweep. So CPs couldn't have been used at all. And sending a mass ping in CP discord asking for people to come online to help with a sweep is kinda metabait. While I still like the idea of a CP scout force, simply wasn't possible yesterday. Bad luck...

Going to put my point in and say that OTA should become event characters like I have been preaching. The sweep I do not very much care for considering the numbers that DID attack CP-1 and what occurred after. I find it hypocritical that OTA and CCA are circle-jerking in the Nexus and the streets are practically empty during max-pop hours. Pretty sure I heard staff say that they did not want to give the bunker base to any of the rebel groups because all they would do is circle-jerk. That IS hypocritical is it not? CCA and OTA get their own (bunker) which practically takes up a quarter of the map while rebels are forced into this small and cramped fucking slum where there are not any hiding places at all?
