For all my life I thought living was simple, I never imagined that in my lifetime the world as I knew it would shape into an apocalyptic hellhole with the only "protection" being a totalitarian inter-dimensional alien empire, I lived my life the way I wanted to live it, I grew up with rich parents and my whole life I've hardly had to put as much effort in as others. I suppose what happened was a life lesson for me, as I'm now barely fed and constantly moving from location to location, with each new location feeling as uninviting as the next. Do I want to resist though? No. Those fools are fighting a battle they can't win, I'm not up for a suicide mission. Our way of living is screwed and slowly coming to an end, might as well watch the world crumble than risk my life regardless. Sure I'm beaten, assaulted, abused and so on, but what can I do about it?
I grew up in a small town in Florida, I'll skip the details, but it was one of the best places in the state. We lived by the sea, I got to see the ocean regularly, and the sun usually shined on my face with a warm soft breeze flowing past me most days. After the portal storms though, I slowly watched everything around me wither and disappear, I saw the oceans drain, the sky change color, the grass begin to fade and the leaves of the trees begin to fall as the trees themselves slowly lose their life. I watched it all happen under the protection of a small military camp that had been set up shortly after the storms began.
When we began to realize that one of the alien invaders actually wanted to ally with us, I remember everyone being so scared, yet so intrigued to be so close to them, the ones that shot green bolts of lightning and stuff. I befriended one, never gave me a name, but he was an amazing feller, always showing off tricks with his green magic, entertaining us whilst we waited out the armageddon. Didn't last long, as the Combine finally arrived, they found our camp, killed those who resisted and the rest they captured, along with the vortigaunt, which I remember they zapped with some sort of device, and put a collar on the poor guy, I sure as hell feared the worst, I actually cried a bit, which is embarrassing to admit but it's true. I miss him to this day.
And now here I am, talking to you, I thought that when I was going to arrive in City 24 it would be another unwelcoming city crawling with unlikable people and run down streets, but this place isn't that bad compared to the rest of them. Hope I can stay here for longer than the rest of those other dirty cities. Hopefully.
