Title.

Have a forum section where players are be able to design their own events and have them approved by staff. They should get temporary GM perms and run THEIR event with staff help and supervision.

Yep, just like on neb. (It worked wonders!).

I honestly would never feed MY event idea to someone else in some random event-suggestion channel and HOPE it gets noticed.

I don’t see a reason not to add this. There’s practically no risk, but massive rewards for the server as a whole

Im gonna suggest this really interesting Player Event I call it residential block fire #385060274

This is already possible on the discord. So a forum section could easily be created.

Edit: Someone else who isn't me can make it though.

As Robert said, this is already a thing, we just don't give players GM perms. @TheDeNuke is the person to speak to about this, as he's in-charge of the story team (ex-event team). And AFAIK you don't even need to be on the ST to write events, you can just submit them straight to the ST.

This completely different than what the suggestion asks for. The whole point of this is to let players organise and GM their own events in the way they envisioned it. The story team really doesn’t solve this. The ability to run your own events as if you were a GM should be open to everyone.

Also, the event request channel is useless for this. It’s a suggestion channel saying “hey, take all my ideas I spent weeks working on and, in the unlikely chance you decide to do something with it, perform it without any input from myself and in a way entirely different than I envisioned it!”

The story team and event request stuff we have now aren’t answers to this suggestion in the slightest. They’re ways to suggest events for other people to interpret, modify, and carry out. It’s fine for simple “can we have more sewer things” suggestions, but that’s it. It doesn’t give the players the ability to run their own events, and doesn’t answer this suggestion.

In short: read the suggestion. It’s painfully clear what Gyran’s asking for. Let players independently run their own full-on events.

Exactly^.
It really isnt hard to grasp.

It's player-run events. Not player-suggested events.

The discord channel suggests events for staff to do. It’s got nothing to do with running your own events. Plus, it’s not organised and the lack of feedback discourages any actual effort from being put into the suggestions. Regardless, it still isn’t anything close to player-run events

For that to work we'd have to have a SA active and overlook things, since the way admin perms work here isn't like on CW script where you just assign admin and its A-OK.

Its a more extensive process; don't know the specifics but I know that I had to link my account and also have privs assigned on discord.

That or a new rank needs to be added that only has the spawning / observer stuff but no bans / logs, etc.; a GM only function and has to be overseen by a full admin or admins.

So far most of the events we've done that were successful had about 3-4 admins doing them (and i don't mean just "spawn headcrabs" events, I mean more intensive events that interact with multiple people / factions in a RP fashion) at minimum, sometimes even 8-10 admins in on it.

So you have to be prepared for that reality as well. Its not just as simple as "here's GM, do your thing".

Yeah, that's the idea. Make a player GM rank with no moderation powers. I'm talking observer, entities, pet, scripts, npcs... The more harmless things that can be fairly easily overlooked by a staff member and, at worst, can just be reverted if needed.

More staff doesn't necessarily mean better events. One or two players who are passionate about it could definitely pull off an interesting smaller-scale event far better than a large team of staff.

I don't think you understand what I mean.

More staff is actually needed (especially on main server events) due to the way some events.

Let me give an example of a event that happened that required that many people as an example.

A BMD event was hosted with about 8 admins attending. Why?

A) You need admins to ensure that the CP response is either minimal OR it is decent in number if it does come (admin Dispatch to curb them).

B) Needed admins for the guards of the BMD (could substitute with players but not many were on at the time so admins hopped in to help).

C) Need to ensure OTA doesn't freak out.

D) Need to ensure you have players to introduce people to the event (could be done by players only but with admin noclip I can find people hidden in peculiar parts in the slums).

D) An admin to watch over other stuff (like quests that we handed out).

In general you have so many admins not because we don't trust people to run events, its because SOMETHING /always/ fucks up and has to be patted out if you don't have an admin or two watching out for stuff. In this example, we had a guy throw a grenade at a group of rebels even with all this prep and admins.

Not saying all events require this much preparation, but some do; especially if your stepping on the toes of other factions.

Hate to bring something to you to, argue this point; but you're speaking about needing more numbers, surely if an event is planned and told beforehand, people would fill those exact gaps for the event specified?

Yeah they will, though I do not know what the procedure for that tbh. I am just a tmin that has helped out with these events as they spontaneously happen sometimes since someone says an idea, others think its good, and it happens before people lose motivation / have to study / work.

You are correct, though.

My point is admins are needed for certain events to monitor each faction the event affects otherwise you get people upset, minging, etc. unfortunately.

Events are... complicated.

There is a reason that my team is split into "Story Team" and "Story Team Assistant" because for a event to even occur requires staff assistance (in our current setup). Therefore beyond suggestions all players can really do when it comes to events is act as event characters- everything else has to practically be done with staff. However, I am willing to get someone to open up a event suggestions area on the fourms under the new "events" subfourm. These events of course will be events that will only take place on the main server as any events that take place on the Short Stories server will have to go through @FungletheBungle

This isn't at all what I hoped for, but I guess it's better than nothing.
