OOC comms should be allowed in instances where there is NO possible way to roleplay a situation but communication is vital. Due to how TBC works (limited time in between waits / turns), and the obvious nature of S2K (if you stand still you die), OOC comms such as a discord chat within the Willard Networks discord should be allowed. I am under the assumption certain factions are already allowed to do this (see: OTA) but this should be extended to ALL factions in TBC / S2K.

S2RP would not count as you have time to /radio, talk normally, /me etc so no OOC comms for S2RP.

Note that the other alternative suggestion to this is no one gets OOC comms, since OOC comms is considered cringe by quite a few people.

1. How are you supposed to hop in a vc with other fight participants when private rebel discords are banned.
2. OTA need ooc comms so they can uphold a certain standard of cohesiveness and professionalism which would be hard to achieve through only ic comms.

Edit: that's not necessarily my personal opinion. Those points are two facts about how the server works right now.

1. Its literally in the suggestion itself; use the Willard Networks discord. It has open and available VC's, and admins can hop in if people use it for stupid shit easily.
2. No. They do not. They can easily just talk amongst each other, and from my knowledge, they have a channel just for themselves on radio. If they do not, then that can be added by a developer easily enough.

That second point is so moot.

OTA don't need anything other than what they're provided on the same level as any other player and faction on the server. I've been part of major communities where OTA communicated with one another just fine without the help of any external help like Discord/TS3, including SCG, Earthfall, GridHive (to name a few) and they got the job done just as neat.

Saying "OTA need comms to be cohesive and professional" is just a lazy mans excuse to give oneself any convenience he can get while masquerading a pretty obvious crutch that is properly conveying information through IC means. If we're already going by "OTA needs X and Y", we can also say "Yeah cops also need OOC communication in order to navigate their sweeps properly" or "rebels need OOC comms in order to have a fighting advantange over cops/OTA"

It's reckless to assume OTA are any better than anyone else just because they have the means and equipment available to wipe out the entire server. For that very reason alone they shouldn't be given any extra benefits to add onto this strength. The slums and sewers are already like their second home due to the high frequency of OTA deployments we've had in the recent weeks, so give them a little break.

It's either the advantange for everyone or nobody. You can't have one or the other. That is, if you're a supporter of balance and equality.

You can perform any and all comms via IC radios. There is no need for OOC comms and allowing OOC comms will introduce some potential meta loopholes. So I would rather not allow it. Though you may see OTA use their own OOC comm channel from time to time, the most I have seen them use this for is to clarify IC orders since OTA language is quite complex and some learners in OTA faction use OOC comms to make sure they are understanding the orders given to them correctly.

OTA have major restrictions on what language they use unlike everyone else. They speak in code where as everyone else speaks in plain English so misunderstanding someone over radio is impossible unlike OTA where its like everyone is speaking a different language and inexperienced members will go "What the hell does this mean?". For the most part, that is all they use it for, they don't really sit in OOC comms talking all day. Hell, even when they do Code Midnight (which is to be quiet) they also stay quiet in the OOC VC, not saying a word. In short, they got very very strict rules on their own comms.

Hope that explains it, so I cannot say yes to this. Not to mention, results on this so far seem mixed with a 50/50 on the reaction score and -3 on the voting score, so I am going to have to say no to this one chief.

Moved back to being an open suggestion after someone kindly asked to have a discussion about this instead. You can always pop me a message in DMs if you would like your suggestions to stay open if they do get closed.

If you think "private rebel discords" don't exist simply because there's a forum rule about it then you probably aren't well versed in Gmod. If people know they'll get banned for talking OOC in these situations (ie; S2K) then you're just never going to know these Discords exist, not stop them entirely.

Speaking from experience if you don't accommodate (ie; allow it in the public Discord vs threatening bans) you'll just push it to private places you can't monitor it at all in - more than it will naturally anyway.

tl;dr you can't stop it, but you can ease your workload.

No-one tell him

Haha yeah, we OTA definitely use /r to give orders and don’t rely on the OTA TAC VC......
Guess that means they lose their VC privileges.

Everyone should use IC comms.

That is all.

TBC and S2K do not allow for actual comms. You already spend the 6 allotted seconds moving and shooting. To type something that makes sense in that same period of time is effectively superhuman.

People are going to use comms anyway if you ban it. I guarantee you people are already using them.

You can encourage people not to use OOC comms, but when the server uses systems that make typing communication difficult, people are going to find a way to circumvent the rule.

OTA should be cohesive without having to be in a VC, but they're probably going to use it anyway. And so are other groups. That's just the way it is.

OTA having a double standard has always been weird to me, especially with them already having mechanical advantages. Just seems unfair in general.

If anything OTA should have metacoms removed, rather than making it standard for everyone.

people are going to do it anyway. it’s unenforceable

Just because someone is going to abuse a game mechanic or a way to circumvent a game mechanic does not mean you pull the nuclear switch and allow it...

Do you have a better solution?

One side is going to do it. Then another side will accuse them of doing it. Then that other side believes they are morally forgivable if they also take part. And then they will take part… to even the fucking odds.

If people think the other team has an unfair advantage, they’re going to complain about it. That’s precisely the reason this thread exists in the first place.

There’s no actual way to PROVE that people are communicating unfairly. It will just result in endless bickering, ESPECIALLY if one of the culprits is friends with a staff member who could be complicit in it.

There are people that treat this like TDM, and there are people that treat it like RP.
