Disclaimer: This isn't meant to really be a discussion thread, more-so just a poll for personal interest.

Would you rather stay on C24 or switch to a different map?

Stratham and Merlin on City 24 a hundred years... Hundred years willard dot network...

So while this isn't meant to be a discussion thread, I will throw in a quick two-cents.

My primary concern is that (eventually) we'll end up changing maps. Maybe to something like C17 Residential (or possibly something along those lines) and the exact same argument will be used on that map that's been used on C24 which is:
"Well, this is a big important City. Therefore nothing crazy/bad/fun can happen here."

The primary goal should be finding a map, fostering an interesting/fun atmosphere, and letting the players handle the rest.
I17 was a good example of this. A corrupt, crazy atmosphere was fostered. Everyone else followed along.

Map change is the same kind of wishful thinking people who cry for switching to outlands RP engage in. The blind assumption that the grass is simply greener on the other side. A map change will do very, very little to alleviate most problems Willard has and that's just reality. We weren't at I17 for more than a week by the time people started calling it 'just like City 24.'

That should tell you all you need to know. If problems were so easily solved by just flipping the board to a different map, it would have already been done. Willard has swapped maps some three times now and look where we are. Still having the same issues that we would have on any of the others.

It sounds like a really good idea until you do it and suddenly all the same issues are still there...except now everything just looks older and less red. Not exactly a massive improvement. Maps matter, but to wager that swapping them can just 'fix' things is downright imaginative. At best, you pretty much stay the exact same. At worst, you end up killing your entire server in your haste. That's not grass people are seeing on the other side, those are weeds.

the end of week one was also the point where hungover raves & vuente cartel got abruptly shut down, the two most significant contributors to i17's atmosphere

this example isn't as good as you think it is

Yeah, but the thing to note is those two things only existed because admins set them up to start with. Those were not made ICly in any respect and were CT creations from the start. They were destroyed via IC means however, even if those were dumb.

Regardless, those two things have absolutely nothing to do with the map they were on. Which is basically my point. People who claim that map changes are some gift from god often do so on this strange basis that RP is entirely different elsewhere, as if you are literally moving across the world to a different culture. It isn't. Those two things could be opened on City 24 V4 or gm_flatgrass, the map has absolutely no impact on what people can and cannot do in an RP sense.

Idk. I think creative potential is at the max when you have a fresh set of eyes looking at a fresh map. The most I was immersed in my character was when I first joined WN and walked around the park in v3 for the first time. I noticed the fine details, the general feel and atmosphere of the map/area. Once it becomes familiar and "business as usual", you (or at least I) stop seeing the fine details and instead view the map in terms of what purpose the location serves (this is the loyalist area, this is the RDC, this is the nexus, this is the slums, etc) and start to "gameify" it in that way.

In my opinion a map rotation would be fun, at least as an experiment. 3-4 months in between map changes gives people enough room to settle in, develop characters and roleplay the story they want before the setting changes and refreshes people's minds and eyes. It would also be appropriate story-wise as citizens are always being relocated, and you never know when you might be forced to pack up and leave.

Yes, i17 was cool but only BECAUSE it had a plot that everyone could coordinate with.
"This city is super corrupt, down to the administration." Okay, I can totally work with that. I'm gonna make a corrupt slimebag. Or, I'm gonna make a hopeful loyalist, etc.

People were only saying "its just like city 24" once the corruption arc ended abruptly and players were left hanging wondering 'what now?'. (Hint: nothing, unless you were CRPD or lambda rebel)

What's City 24's plot? 'This is a super loyalist city' okay, sure...but it doesn't seem like it. The place is constantly being blown up and set on fire (often by admins too, the ones who are supposed to set the scene, not have fun with their admin permissions) and then there is minimal effort put into the loyalist narrative. There are hardly any new propaganda campaigns, slogans, enforced behavior, punishments for wrongthink, etc. How are people supposed to engage?

Creative Team needs to establish a story line, then the player freedom comes with how players react. But the CT has to make the first move. The point and direction of the story has to be obvious too. You can't rely on regular players making the storyline because its often either
1. Uncoordinated/poorly written
2. Forgotten about
3. Only affects a handful of people

Or players just outright forget they are supposed to be the ones starting shit, then they complain when nothing happens, like what we are doing right now.

TLDR: hate the player not the game (and consider a map rotation)

(time to derail hehe)

Good point, further reinforced by just how damn closed off the actual Collaborator's Party is. I get it's supposed to be the upper echelons of loyalism, but there is actually, physically zero difference between T0 and T3 aside from the armband. You are not a loyalist until you hit T4 which is one of the most gated progressions on the server.

So what does this result in? A city with a few loyalists, but most citizens either coasting along, or outright heading to the slums and rebelling, going underground. Sure, it's their right to do that, but the tonal dissonance it makes is jarring at best and immersion-breaking at worst.
CT's have tried to work on this, downgrading 24 from a loyalist to a mere residential city as a result, but this doesn't solve the issue. Players are still sat here just going "okay, it's not loyal any more. What now? Will security change? Will the loyalist party up the ante to try and restore the city's image?"

None of this has happened. It's just business as usual.

I personally just think that the admin box and the map in general are too cramped and therefore wish for a different map.

@Merlinsclaw and I were authed some Legislative Assembly characters a while ago to fix the lack of atmosphere around 'loyalism' but we've run into tons of IC and OOC restrictions holding us back from being as prolific & public as we hoped to be. We were practically ready to make recruitment into the Collaborator's party a fluid but also terrifying thing at the same time.

It's difficult not to see a pattern here of every attempt at a narrative being methodically suffocated.

Honestly T4 is probably the only loyalist position on the server that actually matters. T3 kinda does, since it gives you new rations, but thats about it. That being said, the party is kinda...a mess and while people can get angry when you talk about it, it doesn't change the fact its true. T4's bully T6's and T3's can have more power than those T4's.

Tiers are, practically speaking, mostly worthless. All power is derived from whatever position you have, period. There are perks and you do get some additional treats, but its mostly pretty standard across the board. The hustle to get them would be its highlight, were it more applicable.
Suppose this is a digression though.

Creative Team needs to establish a story line,

Something the general team is aware of and some actual concepts have been put forth. Things can be slow though as talking about change is easier than doing it.

I thought people said it was just like C24 because all the people who made it cool died? also C8 ftw it actually has an outlands and a swag metabase

This is incredibly true.

Something I've noticed over the years is how people always attribute the issues to everything but themselves. "RP is stale because of the map", "RP is stale because of current/lack of storyline", "RP is stale because X is inactive", "RP is stale because noone Y", "RP is stale because Z, A, B, C..."

Obviously, these can all be contributing factors but they're not to be used lightly as excuses. Despite a lot of "the above" being true I've found myself being able to start and maintain roleplay with a lot of people, consistently, and even contribute to create IC threads and mini-narratives to follow, even if mundane in nature.

The map and storyline one are specially prevalent. A map switch is a somewhat effortless (for the players) placebo to make it look like your RP isn't uninspired or boring for like a week or so while you are OOCly re-learning the map layout and put their 3 props down in it (also known as turbo coping). The whole storyline thing, I can somewhat get behind, but otherwise, in a sandbox, the GMs are as at fault as the players for nothing happening in it. I always saw GMs / in this case the creative team like just a silent pointer that every now and then nudges you in the right direction, and makes your objectives come full with life. If you don't got any, that's on you.

A map as "bad"/uninspired/overseen as C18 would work so long everyone put in a little effort in those aspects. IMHO, this map is super detailed, but it is not very good for roleplay. A lot of spaces that aren't used, and lack of areas that can act as hub save Victory Square and the Nexus. Many isolative areas like HPR. Not enough breathing room for ACs as they require filters to even exist, etc. etc.

But even then I don't think it's a bad map. It has a lot of ambience, it is very horizontally connected to ease scenes such as chases and so on. It evidently has a lot of tools in play for it to work, even if it's been being used for like 17 years or whatever people say.

"Atmosphere" isn't necessarily bad atm. Even when I get it's not as loyal-y as it is likely meant to be in many's minds it is still an incredibly permissive and rights-ful city in comparison to other settings I've seen played out.

I wouldn't be necessarily against a map change if it helps aid narrative direction and change it up a bit, but I don't like it when people point out a single issue as the root of all evil. I mean, we're the ones operating the map... If something as barebones and simple as TextRP can work with just imagination, maybe we're relying too much on our "virtual needs" here to justify doing things.

The park was truly the heart and soul of V3, there was something about it that brought some mesmerising effect to players, throughout. Admittedly, it attracted myself like a moth. Shame it's gone.

Creative Team needs to establish a story line

Working on it, at least in brainstorming phase. I just got back from LOA proper, so we'll see what's up in the near coming future.

TRUE, I feel the most people who claim RP is dead are either grinders or rebels could even be some random loyalists but I would class them as grinders
