I can't recall if there is an engineering or mechanical section in the skill trees, however I was thinking that if there is or if it could be added, that a sub-tree or thing you could do would be hotwiring, and or 'hacking' terminals. Of course you would need to have very top of the line equipment (which would be rather difficult to scrap up and get), and would also require the crafting section to be also of a high tier to even attempt to make said items.
After collecting all the items and managing to have the said tool to hack, you should have to of course have either a very high skill level or maxed out depending on what the object is, and have a small 'minigame' to go with it. The best idea I'd say would be similar to Bioshock when you have to connect the pieces before it either short-circuits, or before it activates an alarm system.
Going back to what I said in order to make said item, perhaps have it also be a very high or max tiered item so it can't be accessed so easily.
