So I haven't thought about it a lot, but I thought of it just now and..
What if you could name your weapons and their descriptions?
Like- You go to a certain workbench with something like a hot metal stamp with the name you want on it- A bit like minecraft name tags.
So you just go to a workbench and use the stamp to stamp the name on.

Now, Lets talk descriptions.
I think that having them a bit like normal character descriptions would be good.
This ENTIRE part is very optional, Because weapons already have good descriptions.
Personally, I recommend just the name feature. If this does get added, I wouldn't care what would be changed, kind of just because I want to name my guns...
So anyways, That's it. Any questions or things to say- Say them, Please.
Ciao.

Weapon names seems like another thing that could just easily be RPed to me. If I want to name my gun, I can just simply name it IC. No stamp needed.
The only thing that might be good is actually adjusting weapon descriptions (detailing wear and tear, tallies if you are an edgelord, or as you said, putting a little engraving or stamp on it.) but even that is something that could partially be handled with RP.

yes please add this so that if I lose my gun it'll have my name and CID on it so it can be returned to me

Ah yes, now I can make not only my character edgy anime but my weapon can now become a active accessory to my weebery.

This feels more of a roleplay issue down to how the character portrays their weapon ICly rather than it being a script. I'd be rather shocked if I were to pick up a weapon and suddenly read it has a name and description on it. In my opinion, it's best to probably just let go and let live by the roleplay perspective. A character may have a direct attachment to a weapon but another person will just see it as another tool or instrument.

Less is more.

So what if the changes were done client-side instead of server-side?

So the information was stored somewhere appropriate on the HD of Garrys Mod instead of with the server.

I know a server that (somewhat) did this. It was a CityRP server, and each player had cell phones, and it had a texting feature. The text messages were saved on the player-end, therefore, the server didn't have to read, write, save, close, and load each message.

Then there would be an odd disconnect between the weapon having multiple appearances. Plus, if the only person who knows what the weapon looks like is you, there is absolutely no point in going through the effort to code all that. You might as well just RP it at that point.

The idea of naming a weapon is an absolute no for me, since it is so easy to just RP, and not everyone will call your weapon what you do.

Descriptions could be done, but only if it was an actual state of a weapon, rather than just a client side interpretation. If you put an engraving on your weapon, if would be cool if it actually became apart of it IC. As I said above though, even that could partially be RPed so it really is not needed.

To be honest, I thought of this on my way home in the car because I thought it would be cool to have the ability to recognize weapons that have been with you for the long run.
Fair enough that some people do think its a useless feature, But I think it serves as a character development tool.
Per say: A rebel with a specific gun becomes really popular and they engrave their name onto that weapon. That weapon might actually become Rebel history.
All I'm saying is that to have the ability to at least have a tag next to the actual name of the weapon stating your name or a message of some sort would be cool!

Switch PC and poof, everything gone... Reinstall GMod... load of things that'd break it there.

Maybe, if I ever get around to this, add in a little feature so in the description there is a unique number and add in a tool to scratch that away and put your own name/number in. Won't be having the item name change because I don't want people looking at a gun on the ground and seeing whatever profanity people will put in.

what about
name tags
like in minecraft
change the desc of a gun, or even the name of it like in tf2
make it a custom script, like with the custom script plugin
ez gains

Any potential way to make it some kind of script or document that would be with Steam Cloud? That way, therefore, it isn't with the player's physical computer, but there steam account?

Honestly, weighing in on this. It really doesn't seem feasible nor' is it something we really need. Besides, I see it just emphasising a brand of snowflakery into the roleplay. But let's make a -real- argument why it probably shouldn't be a thing.

How does one know a AK-74 is called 'Maria' from just at glance? Surely what's neccecery is instead to give weapons a description to fullfill that qualification of recognising a weapon's 'name'.

In short, what's really needed is the ability for gamemasters to make a custom item variant based on a weapon or custom items variants in general- now I may be wrong but I am sure I read that this was already a thing in the script?

No, it is either stored server-side (where it is the most efficient to store it for everyone and not track it per player) or locally to the physical PC

Not in the script. There are custom items but they cannot do anything special, just an item that can sit in your inventory and be dropped on the ground.

So, changing the name of a single weapon script isn’t possible?

This is what I'd figured was the case.

I can always extend the weapon base to allow custom stuff on weapons, but I do not want custom names. More like an option to add something custom into the description for whatever personalization you did. At least, I want that when I have time and there are enough guns in circulation to make this worth it.

I just switched pc's because my old one sucked, I hate it because I have to re-login on EVERYTHING.
That's beside the point- I'm not really shook on whether it gets added in or not- Whether it is changed in a way that resembles it.
As long as some people enjoy this idea, That is all I care about.
If no one liked it then what would be the point?
