Official The Avian Update

Vgi1E9B.png

Hello everybody. Based on feedback from the community, we will be experimenting with a new system for Development Blogs. Instead of making a monthly/bi-monthly thread where we group many, some already known features together, we will make dedicated blogs for new large-scale features. With this, we hope to increase the frequency of our Development Blogs and avoid cases where we showcase a feature that players are already familiar with. We will still post our monthly-ish Development Blogs, but they will include smaller features or changes that did not necessarily require their own thread.

With all that being said, we’d like to present: The Avian Update!

This update was not necessarily requested, but we decided to take the initiative this time around, based on the general feedback regarding the bird faction. Some said that it is a minge faction with nothing to do, thus resorting to annoying other players. Others claimed that it was boring and not entertaining. Some others said they really enjoyed it! So we decided to give them some love and a few more things to do, in addition to their normal… bird things.

Bird Nests

Nests are a new way for birds to store their items for later use, or simply protect them from other predators, like The Underclass and disgruntled Civil Protection officers. With hunger and thirst now enabled for our avian friends, they will need to store away any food they can find if they want to survive, including their offspring…

Fertile Bird Eggs

Animals, including birds, must reproduce and create offspring if they hope to preserve their species. Thankfully, due to the differences between the human and avian reproductive systems, the Suppression Field does not affect our avian friends. Thus, they can now mate with other birds of the same species and produce fertilized eggs. These eggs take 24 hours before they can hatch, and have a one-week cooldown.

Once it comes time for the eggs to hatch, any online player can be selected to receive a temporary bird whitelist. This will automatically create a bird character for that player, but it will only have one life. If it does, it’s over.

These new birds will go through a childhood period for 24 hours where they will be particularly vulnerable due to their limited flying ability, among other factors. They will need to depend on the care of their parents in order to survive in this dystopian world.

Go for a ride

Pigeons and Crows can now land on the shoulders of humans and go for a ride! This of course requires the consent of the human, and birds would normally not even get close to humans if they do not trust them, but it is now possible. Hold on tight!

Miscellaneous Changes/Additions

  • - Birds can now only carry one item at a time, no larger than 1x1 in space.
  • - Birds are now required to eat and drink too, but each food item fulfills twice the amount of hunger and/or thirst than normal.
  • - Adult birds now drop bird meat when killed, which can be cooked and then eaten, similar to headcrab and antlion meat.
  • - Staff can now configure an in-game bird-ratio config. By default, the bird ratio is 1:10. The game will prevent you from loading a bird character if the ratio is not met.
  • - Bird chatter now properly translates for humans and birds.
  • - Birds can, every 60 seconds, look for hints of food on the ground, which can fulfill a small amount of hunger and thirst.
  • - Flying now consumes stamina at a rapid rate. Take a break on some ledge every now and again.
  • - Birds can now defecate. This consumes a lot of hunger and thirst and can be detrimental to an avian, considering that low hunger and thirst also lowers the maximum stamina, so use this feature sparingly.
  • - Birds can disable flying through the /ToggleFlight command, allowing them to just hop around if they wish.
