Hello there, people of Willard, my name's Hefestus Woodcock. Today marks the first proper discussion/complaint thread of mine, wherein I invite you all to hold a calm and collected discussion on the conduct of the Moderation Team of Willard Networks. Being a bit of green-horn when it comes to Willard itself and HL2RP, I may see things in a more jaded light; however, I've found that these past months have presented a bit of an uncertain outlook when it comes to how conflict within the community is handled. Majority of my opinions are isolated during the period that encompassed TLM, since that's when I have been most active in the Discord community. To preface, I will not talk on the event itself or how it's been managed. This discussion only pertains to the conduct of the moderation staff and their pacifying acts within the community during that time, which will include the most contentious one, being Grain's permanent ban from Willard Networks. I predict that this thread will cause quite a fuss, so I will apologise early on to the moderation staff for the issues that may arise from this thread. In any case, this ends my opening.
For those still unaware of my presence or identity within the server, I played the character of Henry Earnshaw, an infiltrator for the Combine within TLM. During this time, I've been present for quite a few discussions around the conduct of the antagonist side within the channels related to TLM. Many a-time did arguments pertaining to the OCIN plotline or the infiltrators happen within the channels, and due to the nature of such plotlines requiring to be left in the dark or them never being really expanded upon by the people in-charge of them, they usually would fester and bloom into a kind of animosity for the other side 'responsible' for them. Of course, such discussions rarely lent themselves to any impact within the game server or the story itself, and were most often isolated to the channels in which they happened. Now, I do not mean to say that these discussions were wrong, or shouldn't have been had. The problem that I want to begin to illustrate is the lack of interaction between those at the helm whom should have most of the information, and the people whom are most affected by that information. That hole left by the lack of exposition begins to fill in with speculation (mainly negative in view) for as to why things are a certain way, and as we will see, begins to spread to areas beyond TLM.
A month into the event, during the week when the first official fight between the two major factions was supposed to take place within the streets of City 24, Grain - head of CCA at the time - gets permanently banned from the main Willard Networks server and Echo One without any word by staff. Once people took whiff of this, questions began to arise as to what the nature of this ban was. Staff decided to take a complete silent approach to these questions, being vague and unhelpful as to what caused this verdict. The ban message itself, as was spread around by people in contact with Grain was equally as unhelpful. Of course, in the absence of information, rumours began to spread. All manner of allegations were thrown out by many people, and to make matters even worse, moderators still kept their silence, giving neither credence nor shutting them down as they appeared. Such allegations ranged from metagaming inside of TLM to try and get an advantage, general toxic and subversive behaviour towards the community, and of the more obscene ones were those supporting paedophilia and incest. There was no proof as to whether such allegations were true or not, but the narrative was slowly being set in such a way to where any evil that could be possible, had been done by Grain. Not everyone shared such sentiment, but there were those whom had a dislike for him and took every opportunity to throw a jab at him.
Now, the stance of the staff had also an effect on the Security Council discord server, the place where most of the supporters of Grain had resided. Debates sparked daily as to the nature of the ban, and were usually directed at staff for their silence on the matter. As tensions raised, Rad-X finally decides to give out a statement: the reason why Grain had been banned was... that he tried to get message logs from a private Discord with people from Willard? As it turns out, Grain had been banned due to overreach on his part by trying to conduct his own investigation into a server, wherein he suspected metagaming collusions to be happening. Namely, while in conversation with NanCi (a member of an antagonist group called the Stalker Syndicate) Grain gets a clip from him, in which he tabs out into a private server where he was on-call while in active combat with the rebels of TLM. Grain inquired further into the purpose of this private server, and tries to get NanCi to provide message logs from it, so he can see if there was any credence to his suspicions. NanCi refused and blew the whistle on Grain, which subsequently got him banned. The server which he suspected to have metagaming collusions was investigated long prior by staff, and they had found no proof of actual metagaming happening and the place was designated as just a friend server. The issue was that Grain's overreach could've ended with him coming into contact with personal information of the members of said server, and so, staff concluded that Grain's actions had the potential to end in harm.
The problem is... no proof of malicious intent in wanting to use said information for harm, nor of him knowing that such information even existed within the server, had ever been supplied with the statement, and even Rad-X himself confirmed that no such proof existed. It was a decision whose basis is entirely derived from anecdotal experience, using the past actions of other people (other rule-breakers) whom are not related in any way to Grain, placing him within their category without proof of having neither the same intent, nor having done the same acts as them. As for all the rumours and other allegations levied? None of them were ever mentioned within the ban reason.
After the statement had been given out, a large debate ensued within the Security Council server. Tensions had reached a tipping-point, and some individuals got handed punishments for it. Such tensions then bled out of the server and into the forums, and a day later, Rad-X hands down a new directive in the announcements channel on Main. No more will any of the drama be mentioned, and should anyone begin any fights in regard to it, immediate punishment will be handed out. This would've been a good move, had it been done earlier. Even if the true ban reason had been revealed, there were still people going around peddling minor rumours and sneers about past interactions with Erama, and Grain himself. Generally, they never really went beyond that, and such conduct was always a staple even before the ban was handed down. However, one worrisome observation to be made is the resurgence of ex-members with choppy history coming back immediately once the drama had begun, and throwing their own two-bits into the rumours of paedophilia and incest. Obviously, they didn't simply wave it around with no care, as the moderators would immediately flag them and punish them. They were subtle enough in their conduct to skirt under the limit. And of course, if you were to ever call them out on it, you'd be the one to get punished since you would be inciting a fight. Alas, this ends up with the narrative being the same as it always was, ever since the ban happened, with no chance for intervention by the defending side due to how the circumstances posed themselves.
Nowadays, the server has mostly moved on. There are some actors here and there who still bring up the drama, but no one really takes them up on it and they are soon buried under the noise of people talking about the end of TLM and the beginning of V3. We are only left to ponder how things might've been. Maybe had staff reached out sooner for a statement, or had they nipped the baseless allegations in the bud, things could be much different. Yet all of this is just hopeful meandering and speculation with no real penchant for change. This is how I end my piece, and you may continue yours...
